It wasn’t the most-hyped event that the UFC has put on in recent months, but UFC on Fox 4 proved once again that just because there isn’t a title fight on a card doesn’t mean that it won’t deliver with some incredible fights.

The co-main events featured two light heavyweight bouts, one between Lyoto Machida and Ryan Bader, and the other between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Brandon Vera.

Shogun vs. Vera was originally scheduled to be a No. 1 contenders’ fight, with the winner becoming the next challenger in line for a shot at the UFC light heavyweight championship. But when the Internet cried out against this decision due to Vera’s relative lack of success in the cage recently, UFC President Dana White made the decision to give all four light heavyweights on the main card a shot at becoming the No. 1 contender.

The fighter with the best performance would be given the title fight, which meant that every man had a ton to gain by putting it all on the line…and they did just that.

This unique format allowed for some epic moments that we won’t soon forget. Let’s look back at the best of those moments from UFC on Fox 4.

Lyoto Machida earned the next shot at the UFC Light Heavyweight title shot by KO’ing Ryan Bader in the co-main event of the UFC on Fox 4 show. Machida knew he needed an impressive showing to warrant a rematch with Jones, and the knockout of Bader was just that.

Machida came in a little lighter on the scales, weighing in at 201 pounds, which brought up a number of questions about Machida’s training camp. Joe Rogan attempted to explain during the broadcast that this was due to Machida wanting to be as light on his feet as possible and this could be the reason.

Whatever his reasoning, Machida did everything perfect in his bout with Bader—an indicator he did everything right in his training camp as well.

He came in and showcased his usual karate style that appeared to give Bader trouble, and utilized his new strength to put Bader away with a single punch. The fight was brief but Machida showed us just a taste of what he is now capable of.

Mike Swick finally stepped back into the Octagon after two-plus years of being on the shelf. Injuries and medical conditions prevented the AKA product from making a return to the UFC, but Swick was finally able to fight once more.

Swick stepped into the cage to face off against DaMarques Johnson, who himself is a tough opponent. Johnson had a few moments of success and looked to be close to obtaining a victory but Swick persevered through the rough times.

In the end Swick would end the fight with a huge right hand on the ground and turn the lights out for Johnson.

The performance was a sort of mixed bag for Swick, as he did achieve victory but was clearly rocked on a few occasions. The victory for Swick marked the culmination of nearly two years of hard work, but the question now is, where does Swick go from here?
