UFC on FOX 5 Adds Henderson vs. Diaz Title Fight, Penn vs. MacDonald, ‘Shogun’ vs. ‘Bjönes’

(Final thoughts? Well, he still thinks you’re a bitch, and he’s not trying to shake your hand, homey.)

We might bitch about UFC pay-per-view cards being watered down, but fans are definitely going to get their money’s worth on the next free UFC on FOX card. As first reported by MMA Junkie, the December 8th event (venue TBA) will be stacked with three must-see showdowns, headlined by Ben Henderson‘s second lightweight title defense against Nate Diaz.

Diaz has earned his shot at the belt with three consecutive wins over Takanori Gomi (first-round armbar), Donald Cerrone (gangsterish unanimous decision), and Jim Miller (second-round guillotine choke). Meanwhile, Henderson is a perfect 5-0 in the UFC, and just beat Frankie Edgar for the second time last weekend at UFC 150. Will Diaz be the one to stop Bendo’s juggernaut-like momentum?

The welterweight inter-generational battle between BJ Penn and Rory MacDonald will indeed be postponed to 12/8, after Rory was forced to pull out of their original UFC 152 meeting due to a nasty gash suffered in training.

And in the light-heavyweight division, legendary banger Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will return from his exciting four-round win over Brandon Vera at the last UFC on FOX card to face hot Swedish prospect Alexander Gustafsson. With five consecutive wins under his belt against tough competition, the aggressive and rangy Gustafsson is widely considered to be a future title contender — and if he can get past Shogun, he may clinch his shot as the next challenger in line after Lyoto Machida.

A fourth main-card fight is expected to be added to the FOX broadcast in the near future. For now, I’m gonna go with…Henderson by unanimous decision, MacDonald by second-round TKO, and Gustafsson by split decision. Your thoughts?

Henderson vs. Diaz Title Fight Shows Evolving Relationship Between UFC, Fox

Remember a year ago when the mega-deal between the Ultimate Fighting Championship and Fox broadcasting was announced?

Remember how they included the announcement of a world heavyweight title fight between then-champion Cain Velasquez and Junior dos Santos, and how we all thought that we’d be seeing plenty of title fights on free network television for the foreseeable future?

It didn’t exactly turn out that way.

January rolled around, and we were faced with the prospect of seeing three not-so-anticipated fights between guys who ranged from “hey, I know that guy” to “who is Chris Weidman, exactly?” And then May’s card was headlined by a fight between Jim Miller and Nate Diaz, which sounds perfectly awesome as a UFC on Fox fight but perhaps not so much as a UFC on Fox main event.

Things began to change with the card headlined by Shogun Rua vs. Brandon Vera a few weeks ago. Sure, it still involved Vera, who didn’t exactly light the world on fire since falling from his perch as one of the hottest prospects in the sport five years ago.

But the willingness to put Shogun—normally a staple of pay-per-view broadcasts—and Lyoto Machida on the card showed that Zuffa might be ready to start dosing these Fox broadcasts with a heap of star power or, at the very least, to give them a big-fight feel.

That was confirmed on Tuesday night when the promotion informed USA Today that December’s Fox card will feature three big fights: BJ Penn vs. Rory MacDonald, Shogun Rua vs. Alexander Gustafsson and Benson Henderson defending his lightweight title against Nate Diaz.

Now, look: I realize that none of these three fights—even if bundled on the same broadcast—are going to garner a million pay-per-view buys. Benson Henderson isn’t a major pay-per-view draw—at least not yet—and none of the other fights have the kind of intrigue that led to the interest that surrounded the rematches between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir or Silva versus Sonnen.

But they’re big fights all the same. The lightweight title will be defended on network television, for free, in what should be an incredible stylistic matchup. Shogun Rua tries to fend off the aging process and take out the most highly-touted young buck in the light heavyweight division not named Jon Jones. And BJ Penn returns from a short-lived (and little-believed) retirement to face the top prospect in the welterweight division.

What’s not to love?

I don’t know what changed in the relationship between the UFC and Fox. Things appeared to be getting a little chilly there for awhile, at least from an outsider’s perspective. The ratings for The Ultimate Fighter Live were abysmal, and Fox probably didn’t imagine when they signed up for this deal that they’d be getting Miller vs. Diaz as a featured main event taking up their precious network air time.

But December’s upcoming Fox card should absolutely be taken as a sign that things are changing, and for the better. We don’t know what the pay-per-view industry is going to look like in five or 10 years, but we know it’s a changing business.

If the UFC’s future truly resides on free, ad-supported network television—like every other major sporting league—they must begin to lay the groundwork now, to condition fans to expect great main events on television.

This is a good start.

UFC on Fox 5 to Feature Henderson vs. Diaz and Shogun vs. Gustafsson

Alright, so here’s some late-night breaking news for you courtesy of USA Today’s John Morgan.

After his split-decision win over Frankie Edgar at UFC 150, there was some curiosity as to when Benson Henderson would defend his belt against Nate Diaz.

Well, it seems that everyone’s questions are answered. The final UFC on Fox card will be the home of the lightweight title defense. However, the card doesn’t end there. In the co-main event, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua will face rising star Alexander Gustafsson in a light heavyweight bout.

The card will also feature BJ Penn vs. Rory MacDonald in welterweight action. Yes, the bout that was scrapped from UFC 152 due to a cut that MacDonald sustained in training. A fourth fight will be added to round out the main card.

The Henderson/Diaz bout will surely deliver, as both fighters are known for their exciting style and never-say-die attitude.

Diaz secured his shot at UFC on Fox 3 with a submission win over Jim Miller. Henderson’s two victories over Frankie Edgar have cemented him as the top fighter in the lightweight division.

The Rua/Gustafsson winner will likely be in line for a title shot sometime in 2013.

Many expect Gustafsson to present the biggest challenge to Jon Jones, as he has the physical gifts to match him and the boxing to keep him at bay.

“Shogun” was fighting for a No. 1 contendership at UFC on Fox 4, but he ultimately lost the opportunity to Lyoto Machida.

This card will likely be the most anticipated event on broadcast television since the UFC’s first foray on Fox which saw the heavyweight title change hands when Junior Dos Santos knocked out Cain Velasquez in the first round.

UFC on Fox 5 will take place on Dec. 8. The location is not yet known.

UFC on FOX 5: Rory MacDonald vs. BJ Penn Rumored as Co-Main Event

While it’s still pretty disappointing the fight isn’t happening at UFC 152, we’ll still get to see a bout between B.J. Penn and Rory MacDonald.

As MMAjunkie.com reported on Friday, the Penn-MacDonald matchup will take place on December 5th at UFC on Fox 5.

The major factor many are overlooking is that the report claims Penn and MacDonald will serve as the co-main event. Therefore, the UFC must have a major idea for a main event for the final UFC on Fox of 2012.

Initial reports were that Penn and MacDonald couldn’t agree on a fight date. Penn wanted to fight in Brazil at UFC 153 while MacDonald wanted to fight in Canada with teammate Georges St-Pierre at UFC 154, but it turns out neither will happen.

The best thing about this is that now the fight will be featured on national television and free for mostly everyone to see.

Also, one has to wonder what will headline UFC on Fox 5? Possibly the lightweight title fight between Benson Henderson and Nate Diaz or Lyoto Machida’s Light Heavyweight Championship shot?

December is still a long way off, but details will hopefully emerge soon. Either way, if healthy, we will get treated to B.J. Penn and Rory MacDonald on December 5th.

UFC on FOX 4: Power Ranking the 4 Possible Challengers to Jon Jones

It was only about a week ago that fans were looking at UFC on FOX 4 with a bit of disappointment as a seemingly unimportant main event between Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Brandon Vera was set to headline the network television fight card.

We later learned that the winner of the Rua-Vera fight would be the No. 1 contender for the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship.

While that added some interest to the fight card, many fans were very frustrated with Vera—who had only won one of his previous four fights—being a potential challenger for Jon Jones. Those against the decision flooded Twitter, imploring UFC President Dana White to reconsider.

On Tuesday afternoon, the fans’ wishes were granted as White announced that the most impressive winner of the two fights between Brandon Vera and Shogun Rua, and between Lyoto Machida and Ryan Bader, would be the one who gets the next UFC title fight.

With all four fighters now in play for a shot at Jon Jones, the conversation can now begin—who is the most likely fighter to leave UFC on Fox 4 as the No. 1 contender for Jon Jones’ UFC title?

To answer that question, here is a power ranking of each of the four contenders and their likelihood to be Jon Jones’ next opponent.

The UFC agreed a landmark deal with Fox on August 18th, 2011. They will get to show four events for free every year. The deal is looking to bring a lot of new fans to the UFC.

As a kind of preview for the deal, the UFC put on UFC on Fox 1. The fight’s headline was Cain Velasquez facing Junior Dos Santos for the heavyweight title. The fight would only last just over a minute.

Just one week later, UFC 139 would take place and the main event—Shogun vs. Henderson—was viewed by many as the best fight ever! Many people asked Dana whether he regretted not putting this fight on Fox.

Dana stated that he was happy as it would have led to complaints, and that they needed to ease fans into UFC. This suggests Dana will keep certain fighters off the Fox channel for while. This slideshow will look at the fighters I don’t expect to see on Fox.
