Daniel Cormier‘s decision win over Frank Mir was far from impressive, but it was more than enough to prove he belongs in the conversation for a UFC title shot.

Boos echoed throughout the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif., as the heavyweights clinch-grappled for all 15 minutes of the co-main event Saturday night at UFC on Fox 7.

Mir, who recently started training at Jackson’s MMA, raved about his vast improvement in cardio fans would bear witness to against Cormier. He even looked the part at the official weigh-ins on Friday, stepping onto the scales and showing off his brand new six pack of abs.

Unfortunately, it didn’t translate over on fight night, as Mir appeared gassed halfway into the second round.

Perhaps the more shocking part of the fight was Cormier‘s own slowdown late in the fight. The former wrestling Olympian has always showcased great cardio and the ability to outwork his opponents.

At the post-fight press conference, he merely chalked the performance up to the well-established Octagon jitters:

I always kind of laughed at Dana [White] when he said there’s jitters and there’s nerves that come along with this. I was like, ‘My career has prepared me for this. There’s no chance that I,’ but man I was nervous today. Like I felt so nervous, it’s almost like you want it so bad and you want to do so well, and it’s just like you kind of lay an egg a little bit. I didn’t fight the fight I wanted to, and more than anything, I felt tired, and I have never gotten tired.

There is a first time for everything, especially when you are competing against the best in the world.

The victory for Cormier does bring up one question: Is he ready to fight for a UFC title shot?

Daniel Cormier is definitely ready for a UFC title shot, but his performance against Mir doesn’t justify one. Still, after competing at the highest levels in sports, it’s unlikely Cormier will lay another “egg.”

There have been a number of instances where fighters from other promotions have come over with much pre-fight hype only to have disappointing debuts. Fighters like Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Anthony Pettis certainly didn’t turn any heads in their first UFC bouts.

With a UFC victory finally under his belt, Cormier should have more confidence and a better showing in his next outing.

The UFC and Cormier‘s camp are currently mulling over a drop to light heavyweight to challenge either Jon Jones or Chael Sonnen for the division title, as he would rather avoid fighting his teammate and close friend Cain Velasquez for the heavyweight strap.

It may be wise to allow Daniel Cormier to linger around the heavyweight division for at least a couple of more fights before awarding him with a title shot. This would allow him time to become better acclimated with UFC competition and also give him the opportunity to win over many more casual fans and gain a much larger following.

But differing opinions undoubtedly exist—should the UFC wait and offer him another fight or two, or is “DC” ready now for a world title shot?

UFC on Fox 7 only featured one featherweight bout, but it involved the top contender in the division.

Chad Mendes took on Darren Elkins in the final preliminary bout of the evening. Elkins was riding a 5-0 record in the featherweight division into the fight and was trying to make a case for being an elite 145-pounder.

Mendes had other ideas. He established himself as the top featherweight contender by finishing Elkins in just 68 seconds. Mendes has looked nothing short of fantastic since his title loss to Jose Aldo in 2012.

The rest of 2013 will feature stunning fights in the division.

This is a look at the top 10 featherweights inside the organization right now.

Even the tough crowd in San Jose couldn’t snub the amazing knockouts that unfolded at UFC on Fox 7 on Saturday night.

In an era where people are constantly complaining about point scoring and bad judging, this was the type of fight card fans dream of. The card yielded only four decisions, and all eight of the other bouts ended in spectacular knockouts.

People often feel bad for judges for being forced to decide incredibly close fights, but what about UFC president Dana White? There were certainly more than a couple of fighters who deserved fight bonuses and honors for “Knockout of the Night.” How in the world do you decide which fighter deserves to go home with an extra $50,000 in his pocket?

Fortunately, it’s a good problem to have for the UFC. Saturday night represented arguably the best showing from the world’s fastest-growing sport on a nationally televised network.

Here is a countdown of the knockouts from UFC on Fox 7.

UFC on Fox 7 proved to be one of the best cards in recent memory with action from top to bottom.

Benson Henderson retained his UFC Lightweight Championship in another tightly contested battle. The champion outpointed Gilbert Melendez over the course of 25 minutes. Henderson has yet to stop anyone in his UFC career.

With eight knockout finishes, the event tied UFC 92 for most on a single card. There were no submission finishes as the other four bouts all went to the scorecards.

UFC on Fox 7 delivered in a big way.

Here is your post-fight stock report after the UFC’s latest trip to the Bay Area.

The main event at UFC on Fox 7 was a very good, tactical battle. Officially, Benson Henderson won a split decision, but to say it was close is an understatement.

I had Henderson winning three rounds to two, but if Gilbert Melendez had gotten the decision, I wouldn’t have complained.

Many of the rounds were too close to call. To me, that adds up to a no-brainer rematch. We’ll see how quickly we can see the two best lightweights in the world clash again.

Sometimes, it is good to have two great fighters take on different opponents after such a spirited fight, but not this time.

These two need to get back at it immediately. There is no point in putting Melendez in the Octagon with another lightweight that is clearly beneath him.

Henderson didn’t defeat Melendez handily, so as a champion attempting to move up the pound-for-pound list, he should want to score a definitive victory.

There is tons of risk here, but Henderson doesn’t strike me as a fighter that will ultimately be satisfied with this win.

Melendez had the edge in boxing, but you can’t ignore the leg strikes that twice swept Melendez off his feet. The fact that there were no takedowns only served to further muddle the picture of the fight.

As a hardcore MMA fan, I enjoyed the artistry both men displayed. The boos that come from MMA crowds sometimes are puzzling.

But no matter what the crowd at the HP Pavilion thought, this was a great fight.

UFC fans saw what the hype was all about with Melendez and Henderson proved his mettle as champion. But I don’t think either man can walk away from this epic clash and feel like the superior fighter.

Henderson got the decision and he’s still champion, but there is a doubt in his mind. You could tell he was relieved when he wiped the proverbial sweat from his brow as Bruce Buffer read the judges’ cards.

The champion needs to remove that doubt in a rematch, and soon.

Follow me, because Royce Gracie started me on this MMA path, and now I’m out of control.
