Growing up, UFC welterweight Jake Ellenberger (26-5) had it all—loving parents, an older brother, and even a fraternal twin.

However, it wasn’t until October of 2009 when Ellenberger’s life would change after finding out his twin brother Joe was diagnosed with paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, also known as PNH.

Jake, the youngest twin by exactly one minute, recently sat down with Bleacher Report and shared his childhood upbringing and the rare disease that almost took his from brother away from him.

“Growing up with Joe was always really competitive. Basically every time we did something together it was a competition,” laughed Ellenberger. “Needless to say, there was a lot of fighting and wrestling going on between the two of us.”

“There was a lot of ultimate submission wrestling in the living room. When you’re young, it wasn’t cool to get along but we grew up and got a lot closer,” said Ellenberger. “But it was definitely always competitive.”

Jake, like the rest of the family, grew up knowing nothing about the disease called PNH.

But, just a little over years ago, everything in the Ellenberger family would change as life stood still.

“When I found out my brother was diagnosed with this, it was definitely life-changing. You know, it was something extremely hard to deal with not just for us but our family,” stated Ellenberger. “It was something that was really tough to even explain.”

“If anyone can overcome this, it’s definitely Joe. We believe strongly that God will only give us what we can handle. Joe’s definitely moving forward and pushing through adversity,” said Ellenberger. “I really admire that about him.”

Through determination and a will to succeed, Joe was able to overcome the odds and continue training in the world of mixed martial arts with his brother.

However, if you had told Ellenberger years ago that he’d be fighting for a living, he would have said you’re crazy.

“Joe and I both actually fought the same time on the same night for fun the first time,” said Ellenberger. “We were just fans of the sport and thought it would be a thrill, so we decided to fight.”

“We just kind of went from there. I was definitely our competitive nature and we got hooked to it. We loved it and wanted to do it more and more,” shared Ellenberger. “Joe came out of college as a wrestler and I started training as well.”

Ellenberger’s success has led him to headlining UFC on FUEL TV, which will take place in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska on February 15th.

“It’s humbling for sure. It’s really an honor anytime you can headline an event for the UFC. I’ve worked really hard to get to where I’m at today, and the UFC will take care of you for that,” stated Ellenberger. “They will market you and help promote you if you’re successful.”

“It’s awesome being in Omaha, where I was born and raised. Being around family, friends and familiar faces is always nice. I not only get to represent the sport, but the Midwest,” said Ellenberger. “It’s an honor.”

When action begins in the final bout of the evening at the Omaha Civic Auditorium, Ellenberger will be taking on the scrappy Diego Sanchez (23-4).

“You know, a lot of people like to say someone’s better at this and someone’s better at that. But, I don’t think anyone has an advantage anywhere when it’s time to fight,” said Ellenberger. “Both guys are training to win and do whatever they can to finish.”

“I’m not looking past Diego at all. He’s a warrior and he’s well prepared. I’m not expecting an easy fight at all,” stated Ellenberger. “I’ve done everything I can to prepare and I know I can come out on top and be victorious, but it won’t be an easy fight.”

As for the outcome of the fight?

“It’s really hard to say for this one. He’s shown in the past he can stay in a fight for the whole length of time. I’m not really worried what he can do but what I can do. I’m definitely going to use my strengths in my stand-up for this fight.

“I always plan for the worst-case scenario,” shared Ellenberger. “I’m preparing for a long three-round fight, but anything shorter, I’ll be really happy with.”

Many believe a win over Sanchez could be enough to earn “The Juggernaut” a title shot in his upcoming bout.

Ellenberger would agree.

“Yeah you know, it’s definitely possible. I really haven’t been thinking about that too much to be honest. It’s definitely my goal and where I want to be. That’s what I’m working for every day,” stated Ellenberger. “I got Diego Sanchez in front of me, so I got to get through him and prove that I’m worthy of that title.”

Whether Ellenberger earns his much-desired title shot with a win or not, he knows it will come when the time is right.

Until then, the rising star will continue to work hard and keep the drive that’s allowed him to get to this point in his career.

With the help of others, Ellenberger believes the sky is the limit.

“Riley Ross has been my strength and conditioning coach for a long time. He’s been a great friend of mine and has really helped a lot in my career,” said Ellenberger. “Mark Munoz has also been not only a training partner of mine but a great leader in my life.”

At UFC on Fuel TV, Jake Ellenberger will look to move one step closer to a welterweight title shot with a win over Diego Sanchez. Coming off of a very impressive win over Jake Shields, Ellenberger has separated himself as one of the top contenders in the division.

A winner of back-to-back fights, Sanchez will attempt to steal Ellenberger’s spot in line for a championship bout by imposing his aggressive style. At worst, Sanchez will provide a stiff test for Ellenberger, as the former lightweight contender has never been stopped in a three-round fight.

The event will also feature a battle of up-and-coming heavyweights, as Stefan Struve will square off against Dave Herman in the co-main event. Both young fighters are coming off of big wins in their previous performance, and will be trying to score an impressive victory against the other to earn a step up in competition.

Before Wednesday’s event, the fighters will hit the scales at the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, Neb. on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. ET.

Video of the weigh-ins will be streamed live on the above video player. After the weigh-ins, stay tuned to Bleacher Report MMA for all the latest on UFC on Fuel TV and the rest of your MMA needs.

Tomorrow night, budding welterweight contenders Diego Sanchez and Jake Ellenberger will take center stage, as the duo are set to headline the organization’s first full-fledged event on FUEL TV.

Both men have been on impressive runs as of late, most notably Ellenberger, who recently earned the biggest win of his career when he knocked out former Strikeforce middleweight champion Jake Shields in less than one minute.

Hoping to build on the momentum of their recent successes, both Sanchez and Ellenberger are anteing up a lot at stake in an effort to make their way to the top of the division.

UFC on Fuel TV 1: Predictions for the Sanchez vs. Ellenberger and Struve vs. Herman Fights

The UFC will travel to Omaha, Nebraska for the second time in the history of the promotion when they present UFC on Fuel 1 from the Omaha Civic Auditorium on Wednesday, February 15. The two headlining bouts will be Diego Sanchez vs. Jake Ellenberger and Stefan Struve vs. Dave Herman.  Below you will find predictions for those fights.

Diego Sanchez vs. Jake Ellenberger: First things first, I will be totally shocked if we see anything but an all out stand up battle in this one, but then again I expected the same from Nick Diaz and Carlos Condit and we all know how that turned out.  The key for Ellenberger will be the pace of Sanchez.  If Ellenberger allows Sanchez to set and control the pace he may find himself on the losing end in this one. What could be Sanchez’s downfall in this bout is his willingness to stand and brawl.  He’s always shown that he can take a punch, but at some point that ability turns into a liability and this may very well be the fight where Sanchez suffers his first “true” KO or TKO loss.  Ellenberger has 17 KO wins in his career, I’m going to go out on a limb on this one and predict he makes it 18 on Wednesday. Ellenberger by second round TKO.

Stefan Struve vs. Dave Herman: Dave Herman made his UFC debut at UFC 131 ending John-Olav Einemo’s night via a second round TKO, earning “Fight of the Night” Honors in the process.  Struve also took home a Fight Night bonus in his last bout stopping Pat Barry via triangle choke. Struve has been a slow starter in many of his bouts and Herman must take advantage of that. Watch for Herman to force Struve into a brawl early on exploiting that weakness and ending the fight early. Herman by first round TKO.

UFC on Fuel: Jake Ellenberger Is Embracing Fighting at Home, Looking for a Title

For a fighter who is on the brink of earning a UFC title shot, Jake Ellenberger looks as calm as he possibly could be.

Ellenberger is set to fight Diego Sanchez in this week’s UFC on Fuel TV main event, in a bout that will have huge title implications and to top it off, it’s in Ellenberger’s hometown of Omaha, Nebraska.

Still, Ellenberger is more comfortable than most would think.

“You know people think there’s more pressure being at home, but for me it’s more comfortable, it’s been easy. It’s not like being in Vegas with all the lights and people, it’s more relaxing here. I think it makes it a little less stressful being here.” Ellenberger said at today’s open workouts

Ellenberger will obviously have the hometown crowd behind him, even against a fan favorite like Sanchez, and the pressure will definitely be on “The Juggernaut” to put on an impressive performance.

Currently riding a five fight win streak, with a huge knockout win over Jake Shields coming in his last bout, Ellenberger arguably has more momentum than any fighter in the division, and a win over Sanchez will validate his spot at the head of the pack of challengers.

After over 30 fights and numerous setbacks, Ellenberger is finally getting his chance to become a star, and it’s something he is taking seriously.

“I’ve really put in the work, I have been around the sport a long time and the hard work and traveling the hard road is really paying off. This is a big opportunity for me. I’m looking one fight at a time until I get the title shot. I’m not thinking much past Wednesday, but my goal has always been a world title.”

A win this week could easily lead to a shot at that world title he’s been aiming for, as well as a rematch with Carlos Condit, who recently won the UFC’s interim welterweight belt.

As Condit was the man who gave Ellenberger a loss in his UFC debut back in 2009, it is obviously a fight Ellenberger would welcome.

But to hear it from Jake, he has no preference who he fights, as long as he gets his shot at the belt:

“He’s [Condit] proved that he should be there, he deserves it. It’s not like he was just put there, he’s definitely earned it. I have to get past Diego and then hopefully I can get Condit or even GSP down the road here.”

Regardless of the outcome against Sanchez, Ellenberger has officially made himself a contender in one of the UFC’s deepest divisions, and he will remain a title threat for years to come at 170.

But if all goes well for him on Wednesday night, his hometown fans could be left cheering as he marches towards his shot at UFC gold.
