The UFC will return to Brazil with a UFC on Fuel TV 10 that features a matchup of two familiar heavyweights in Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Fabricio Werdum.

The two Brazilians should be familiar with each other. Not only did Nogueira score a unanimous decision victory against Werdum in the 2006 PRIDE Openweight Grand Prix, but the two coached against each other in the second season of The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil.

Both fighters have changed considerably since 2006. Nogueira is now out to prove that he still has something left in the tank after going just 3-3 in his last six fights.

Werdum will be looking to establish himself as a top contender for the title after wins over Roy Nelson and Mike Russow since coming back to the UFC after a stint in Strikeforce.

The heavyweight collision isn’t the only attraction on this card, though. Exciting fighters like Thiago Silva, Rafael Cavalcante and Erick Silva will also be making appearances as well as the TUF: Brazil 2 championship fight.

With plenty of exciting fights and the intense atmosphere of Brazil, this is an underrated card you won’t want to miss. Here’s a look at the fight card and how you can be sure to catch all the action.

Werdum Exacts Revenge Against Nogueira

Big Nog may have bested Werdum back in 2006, but the fighters are on completely different trajectories right now. Werdum has become a legitimate contender in the heavyweight division and Big Nog is trying to stave off retirement.

Both men have world class jiu-jitsu and that means one thing—this fight will be decided on the feet. With both fighters’ ground games canceling each other out, striking could be the difference.

Given Werdum’s recent fights, he holds the advantage in that area. According to FightMetric, “Vai Cavalooutlanded Russow 31-3 and Nelson 91-26. He’s been especially devastating in the clinch and should continue to show improvement in the striking game against Big Nog.

Rafael Cavalcante Impresses in UFC Debut

Ever since Strikeforce folded into the UFC, the fighters from Scott Coker’s organization have been making their presence felt. At UFC on Fuel TV 10, “Feijao” will become the latest to make a splash in the UFC.

Cavalcante is a former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion and actually has a two-fight win streak heading into the fight although his submission win against Mike Kyle was ruled a no-contest when he failed the post-fight drug test.

Cavalcante draws Thiago Silva in his debut and he really couldn’t have asked for a better matchup. Silva is a relatively well-known name, but he hasn’t technically won a fight since 2009. His only two wins in that time span were changed to no-contests after Silva also failed post-fight drug tests.

Silva has only lost to high-quality fighters (Alexander Gustafsson, Rashad Evans and Lyoto Machida), so this should be competitive. A win for Feijao would make him an intriguing contender at 205.

Erick Silva Gets Hype Train Restarted With Dominant Win

Erick Silva may have the most impressive 1-2 streak in the UFC. Yes, he’s lost two out of his last three fights, but the Brazilian has looked impressive in doing so.

The first loss came via questionable disqualification as he actually knocked out Carlo Prater 29 seconds into the first round but was DQ’d for shots to the back of the head that came after Silva had landed the knockout blows.

Silva then rebounded strong with a first-round submission victory over Charlie Brenneman. The win netted Silva a big step up in competition as he took on UFC veteran Jon Fitch.

Silva’s attempt to upset Fitch came up just short as he dropped a unanimous decision, but it earned him Fight of the Night honors and showed he can compete at a high level.

Now Silva gets Jason High, who will be making his return to the UFC and doesn’t possess the elite wrestling of Fitch. Expect Silva to get his hype train back on track with a spectacular finish.

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira: Still Here After All These Years

When Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira won his first major title in PRIDE Fighting Championships while competing in Japan back in 2001, the roster of heavyweights over in America fighting in the UFC was a much different list than it is today.

At that time, future UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture was champion, and the list of contenders included Pedro Rizzo, Ricco Rodriguez and Josh Barnett.  A young future champion named Frank Mir was actually the opening fight on the card where Couture defeated Rizzo for a second straight time to retain his title back in 2001.

During that same period, Nogueira was ruling the heavyweight world in Japan as the new PRIDE champion after defeating Heath Herring.

Now more than 11 years later, Nogueira is still in the top 10 of the division and fighting in main events like the one coming up this weekend at UFC on Fuel 10, while most of the heavyweights that were relevant back in 2001 are long gone.

“A lot of guys came in after me and they quit before me,” Nogueira told Bleacher Report.  “I’ve seen that a lot.  That’s motivation.  That’s teamwork, I don’t do that myself.  I’m hungry, but I have a good team around me. Good coaches and good sparring partners.  When you wake up in the morning and have good training and learn something, have good adrenaline and you’re going to face some good guys in the gym, that keeps you warm.  I keep good people around me to keep that motivation.”

Nogueira works on a daily basis with a murderer’s row of MMA talent, including former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos, UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and a host of other top fighters from Brazil.

The talent in the room helps to keep Nogueira feeling young, although he admits his body sometimes feels a little older, especially after a rough couple of years that saw him on the doctor’s table as much as he was on the mats.

A lifetime of fighting can catch up to a person’s body, and Nogueira found that out all too well with knee injuries, hip injuries and a broken arm suffered in his bout against Frank Mir in 2011.

Now as he enters his next fight this weekend against Fabricio Werdum, Nogueira says he’s let his body heal up instead of pushing through injuries for once.  It’s resulted in the best condition his body has felt in years.

“Coming off of the last two or three years, I was coming off a lot of injuries.  My ACL, my hips and now I feel I’m in the best shape,” Nogueira stated.  “I couldn’t do my best performance in the last few years.  I’ve improved a lot of things.  I’ve improved a lot of my hands.  It’s given me motivation to fight the best.”

Nogueira will get a chance to prove he’s back to full health when he faces a top-three heavyweight this weekend in his native Brazil.  The former UFC and PRIDE champion is very familiar with Werdum because he actually fought him once before in 2007 when both were competing in Japan.

“I was a more experienced fighter than he was, I strike much better than him, and I used more of my experience.  But the biggest thing in the fight was I put him to fight my fight, that’s how the fight worked,” Nogueira said when remembering their first fight.  “He was dangerous a couple of times.  He was a new jiu-jitsu guy coming up in PRIDE with a lot of good submissions.  We worked a lot on how to avoid the submissions, the triangles and the armbars.  But my boxing was better, my timing was better, and I made him fight my game.  He was a tough opponent.”

Nogueira knows that a lot can change over the course of six years, but fundamentally, he believes there are still advantages he has over Werdum now the same as he did before.

The plan is to make Werdum fall into those same tendencies, and Nogueira believes he can walk away victorious.

“I know that’s going to give me an idea of what’s going to be in the next fight,” Nogueira said.  “My hands are better.  I’m going to try to make him fight my fight like we had before.”

As with almost every UFC event, there are some fighters facing pressure heading into the event. For some, that pressure is the fear of being released from the promotion with a loss.  For others competing on the card, the pressure could come in the loss of standing in their weight division.  Whatever the case, there will be fighters who are on the hot seat heading into the Brazil card.

Who are the fighters with the most at stake? Read on to find out.

Fabricio Werdum: ‘7 Years Ago, It Was Nogueira’s Time. Now It’s My Time’

It’s been a year since Fabricio Werdum last fought in the UFC, and during his absence, the division kept moving forward without him.

Since returning to the UFC last year, Werdum was able to pick up two wins, including his Fight of the Night victory over current top five heavyweight Roy Nelson, and put his name in the hat as a potential contender for the gold.

Still, 12 months have passed since then, and even Werdum admits the circumstances aren’t perfect, because, as of his last win, he seemed poised to make a run at the belt in 2012.  He’s become a forgotten contender because he hasn’t been as visible, having no fights since last year.

He plans on reminding the world who he is this weekend.

“It’s not ideal.  I was off for about a year, and if I could fight four times a year, I would be glad to do that.  But I did it for a very good cause, which was The Ultimate Fighter,” Werdum explained to Bleacher Report.  “I was able to have this great experience.  I was in contact with fighting all the time.  It would have been different if I was away due to a serious injury or something like that.  It wasn’t like that.  I was able to stay focused on my training (and) I was able to be in the fighting environment all the time.  So, (it was) not ideal but for a very good reason.”

Since he won his last fight against Mike Russow in June 2012, Cain Velasquez wrestled the title away from Junior Dos Santos, and fellow Strikeforce heavyweight Daniel Cormier came to the UFC and jumped right into the mix amongst the best in the world.

Werdum is happy to make the world remember that he’s also right there in terms of title contention, and he believes winning impressively this Saturday will serve as notice to the rest of the division.

“I’ve been preparing myself for this moment, for this opportunity to fight for the belt for many years now,” Werdum said.  “I think I was able to showcase in my last fight why I’m ready for it.  I did my part, and of course, I have to do it again this time with Big Nog, and I hope to be able to show everyone that I am definitely ready for it.  I do feel like I’m just right there, sitting in the corner, waiting for it to happen.”

To get to the precipice of a potential title shot, Werdum first has to get past an old rival this weekend when he faces Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the main event for UFC on Fuel 10. Several years ago, when Werdum was still just a young pup in the sport, he fought Nogueira in Pride Fighting Championships.

Nogueira won that fight, and it served as a valuable learning lesson to Werdum, because after that loss he went on to become one of the top heavyweights in the sport, which led him back to the rematch this weekend.

It’s a different age now, and Werdum is ready to show Nogueira that he’s learned plenty since they first met seven years ago.

“I don’t see it as a rematch.  I’ve had all this experience, all these years, (and) they make a huge difference.  I see it as an entirely new fight,” Werdum commented.  “I respect Big Nog a lot, everyone knows that, but in there, I won’t acknowledge him.  I’ll do everything in my power to get past him.  It’s certainly a different time for both of us.  I feel like seven years ago, it was his time, but now it’s my time.”

Nobody is fooling themselves into pretending that the two fighters in the main event aren’t at much different stages in their careers right now.

A few years ago, Nogueira was considered the best heavyweight in the sport alongside former Pride champion Fedor Emelianenko, but as new talent developed and injuries mounted for the Brazilian legend, he was no longer a fighter in the deepest waters of title contention.

Werdum, however, is possibly one or two fights away from challenging for the belt.  Still, Werdum hasn’t been tricked into thinking Nogueria will just be a pushover because he’s not in the same highly regarded position anymore.

“I think he’s always a very dangerous fighter.  He’s always had this very distinct feature about him, which is he’s always able to continue losing a fight and then he’ll just completely reverse the situation and come out on top,” Werdum said.  “I feel like he’s always going to be that very dangerous fighter, that (he is) always going to have very heavy hands, a dangerous boxing game (and) always have a very good ground game.

“I think he was able to show, and is still showing, that he’s doing very well physically. You cannot underestimate him.”
