In the film Fightville, which charts the trials and tribulations of a group of MMA fighters in Lafayette, La., filmmaker Michael Tucker asks local promoter Gil “The Thrill” Guillory about the prospects of young fighter Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier. Guillory responds, “Will he fight for the UFC? Will he become champion? Ummm, potential… but potential has a time limit on it. Potential has a time frame.”

At 23 years old, that potential has been half realised already after Poirier stormed into a four-fight winning streak in the UFC since entering the Octagon in 2011. Now only one fight stands between him and a title shot against featherweight champion Jose Aldo, in what could go down as the making of an MMA superstar.

That fight will take place this Tuesday on May 15, as Poirier headlines against Chan-Sung Jung at UFC on Fuel TV 3. The event is perfectly timed with the release of the film, which showcases Poirier’s rise through the Louisiana MMA scene, with both fighter and film poised to capitalise on each other’s success.

Watching Poirier in those early days in Louisiana three years ago, in what is an all too familiar story of a troubled kid finding an outlet in fighting, his unassailable path into the big leagues is the culmination of a destiny carved in a blood and sweat gym in Lafayette. Hard work pays off, and Poirier has worked tirelessly, racking up 13 fights in his short career to get to where he is.

But the man standing in his way has his own story to write. Jung, also known as the Korean Zombie for his ability to endure punches, is undefeated in the UFC. In his last two matches, he’s secured both the submission of the night and the knockout of the night—the last a seven-second KO of former title prospect Mark Hominick.

Jung knows what the fight against Poirier will mean for him. “I think right now Dustin and I are the main contenders for a fight against Aldo, for a number of reasons, so it makes sense that the winner of our fight would be the next in line for Aldo,” he told Ariel Helwani of MMA fighting.com.

The Korean is unfazed by all the hype surrounding Poirier, and he believes he betters the Louisiana native both on the ground and standing.

“His biggest strengths are that he’s tough and he’s very composed, especially for a relatively young guy,” Jung tells Helwani. “I think that his weakness is that while he’s well-rounded, he doesn’t stand out in one particular area.”

Both fighters have proven themselves high-level submission artists, but most commentators are giving Poirier the edge in the stand-up. After all, Jung only has three knockouts in his five-year career, compared to the five Poirier has notched up in only three years.

But Poirier is happy to take the fight anywhere. As he told UFC Tonight (h/t MMAfighters.com), “I really see him having a tough time of getting him [sic] down so I think that’s gonna be up to me. I think I might be able to use my wrestling a little bit better than he can to dictate where the fight takes place,” explained Poirier before referring to Jung’s memorable finish of Leonard Garcia last year. “Just because a guy does a Twister, I’m not 100% convinced that he’s a brilliant jiu-jitsu practitioner. I’ll find out when we get in there and start moving around.”

In the run-up to the fight, Poirier released a video which features zombies invading his gym. As both a promotion for the film Fightville and the fight against Jung, the video fades to black just as the zombies surround him.

What happens next is left to be decided on Tuesday, where only one of the fighters will walk away with an ending worthy of the big screen.

UFC on Fuel 3: Predicting the Winners of the Post-Fight Bonuses

UFC on Fuel 3 will be an early-week treat for MMA fans. Can’t ask for much more on a Tuesday night than a full card of fights on free television.

The card features some intriguing matchups, starting with TUF Season 12 guillotine magician Cody Mckenzie, who had won 10 straight fights by guillotine choke until his two setbacks in the UFC, vs. Marcus Levesseur in his UFC debut.

Another intriguing matchup will feature UFC Veteran Jason McDonald in his 14th fight in the organization against Tom Lawlor, who will be making his sixth appearance in the Octagon.

Another fighter who is no stranger to the Octagon, Jeremy Stephens, will be taking on Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone. Cowboy has a combined 10-4 record in his Zuffa Career and has taken on some of the best in both the WEC and UFC.

TUF Season 7 veteran and part-time UFC promoter and commentator Amir Sadollah will take on Jorge Lopez in an intriguing welterweight matchup. Lopez only has a loss to Justin Edwards on his UFC résumé; however, he had a 10-fight win streak before he joined the organization and will be looking to prove that he can get a victory on the sport’s biggest stage.

In the main event, Chan Sung Jung, better known by his nickname “The Korean Zombie,” will take on Dustin Porier. The Korean Zombie lost his last two fights in the WEC but is 2-0 since joining the UFC. He won by a rare twister submission against Leonard Garcia and then knocked out Mark Hominic seven seconds into Round 1. Porier, another WEC transfer, is 4-0 in the UFC and has recently won by two submissions of his own.

Going into every UFC card, each fighter has an extreme incentive to win his fight. However, there is also that little extra incentive, which offers a large financial reward, if they can earn a post-fight bonus by either getting the best knockout of the night, submission of the night or being involved in the fight of the night.

Here are my predictions for the fighters who will bring home an extra check next Tuesday night.

The UFC presents its third annual event on FUEL TV this Tuesday, headlined by an intriguing title eliminator bout for the featherweight division.

Dustin “The Diamond” Poirier and “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung square off in the evening’s main event to determine who earns a title fight with current 145-pound champion Jose Aldo.

The main card kicks off when grizzled veteran Jason MacDonald takes on the always entertaining Tom “The Filthy Mauler” Lawlor in a middleweight scrap.

Next up, in a light heavyweight affair, Igor Pokrajac will go toe-to-toe with the always game Fabio Maldonado.

At 135 pounds, Yves Jabouin looks to make it three wins in a row after dropping down from the featherweight division when he meets a talented grappler in Jeff Hougland.

In a bout that has “show stealer” written all over it, Jeremy Stephens takes on Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in a match up that promises fireworks.

Right before the feature bout, former “The Ultimate Fighter” winner Amir Sadollah takes on Jorge Lopez in a fight that all but promises a ton of action on the feet.

This Tuesday’s UFC on Fuel TV 3 will feature a clash between highly ranked featherweights Chan Sung Jung and Dustin Poirier.

Since joining the UFC, neither Jung nor Poirier have suffered a loss and are now considered two of the top contenders in the 145-pound division. With a win in the main event of UFC on Fuel TV 3, either fighter could earn a spot in a featherweight title fight against the winner of a bout between champion Jose Aldo and Erik Koch.

The fight card will also feature an important lightweight matchup between Donald Cerrone and Jeremy Stephens. Despite both fighters coming off of losses, the winner of this fight will find themselves back in title contention if they can win impressively.

Former The Ultimate Fighter contestants Amir Sadollah, Tom Lawlor and Brad Tavares also round out a card that should be plenty entertaining for those who tune in.

Before Tuesday’s event, the fighters will hit the scales at the Patriot Center in Fairfax, Va. on Monday at 4 p.m. ET. Video of the weigh-ins will be streamed live on the below video player. After the weigh-ins, stay tuned to Bleacher Report MMA for all the latest on UFC on Fox 3 and the rest of your MMA needs.

This Tuesday, UFC on Fuel TV: Korean Zombie vs. Poirier goes down in the Washington, D.C. suburb of Fairfax, Virginia.

I’m not going to sugar coat it: This one may not be a big-time ratings bonanza. Not a lot of household names on the old playbill there. But there are some good fights to be found, and hey, at the end of the day, it’s free. Hell, I’ll watch lawnmower racing if it’s free. Don’t kid yourself: When they crash into the hay bales that line the side of the track, that’s exhilarating stuff!

But it’s just the nature of the beast that some cards are better than others. That’s why they invented DVRs, and it’s why you’re reading this slideshow. We’re helping you cut the wheat from the chaff by ranking the fights from least exciting to most.

And if you find you need to go grab another beer at some point during the action, even if it’s on a weeknight, this will tell you when to go, you filthy alcoholic. And grab me one too this time, why don’t you.

(Note: Not every fight will be available on TV, depending on time constraints.)

Looking for the first three-fight winning streak of his MMA career, Amir Sadollah was defeated in a dominant decision win for Duane Ludwig in August. Now, Sadollah will try to avoid losing back-to-back contests for the first time against Jorge Lopez at UFC on Fuel TV 3.

Lopez, who had won 10 straight fights leading into his UFC debut, was beaten by Justin Edwards in September. Coming out of Wanderlei Silva’s Wand Fight Team, there were high expectations for Lopez, who will now have to get back on a winning track in order to keep his spot on the UFC’s welterweight roster.

Before what will be an extremely pivotal bout in the careers of both fighters, let’s take a look at whether Sadollah or Lopez has a better chance of earning victory on Tuesday.
