Once Again, Pat Barry Is Looking to Kill or Be Killed

With two consecutive stoppage losses against Cheick Kongo and Stefan Struve, and a 3-4 record in the UFC overall, Pat Barry truly needs to get his shit together tomorrow night in Nashville. He and Christian Morecraft will be slugging it out in the opening bout of UFC on FX 1‘s main card, and a third loss could spell the end of Barry’s UFC contract.

Or maybe not. UFC president Dana White has long been a fan of Barry’s “Hype or Die” style, and records don’t matter to Barry anyway. As he told MMAJunkie:

Coming off two losses is no different than coming off two wins, in my opinion…The sport has evolved nowadays to where it’s not just about fighting any more. We’re entertainers. We’re athletes first, but we’re entertainers along with being athletes. So we’ve got to be able to fight, and we’ve got to be able to perform. I can throw a jab and run from anybody. But who wants to see that?…I come into put on a show. It’s ‘HD.’ Either I’m killing people, or I’m getting killed. I’m going to lose better than anybody if I do.”

We’ll give it to Pat; he definitely loses better than anybody.

UFC on FX Fight Card: Duane Ludwig vs. Josh Neer Breakdown

Now the official owner of the fastest knockout in UFC history, Duane Ludwig isn’t concerned with anything MMA-related except training and competing to the best of his ability one fight at a time.

“I don’t really care what is going on outside of the cage as far as rankings and momentum,” Ludwig told Heavy after open workouts for this Friday’s UFC on FX. “My opponent is Josh Neer, and that is my focus. It’s the only thing I can control, so I don’t focus on his wins or losses. I focus on the task at hand. It’s not a good idea to look away from that.”

This Christmas, Ludwig’s present from UFC president Dana White came in the form of a Twitter message stating that Ludwig was now recognized for having the quickest knockout in the history of the organization. It was a title that Ludwig and his fans had been campaigning for since his victory over Jonathan Goulet was incorrectly timed at 11 seconds by the athletic commission.

After watching video of some of the UFC’s fastest knockouts side by side, White agreed with Ludwig and gave the welterweight fighter the distinction he had been hoping for. With that task out of the way, it was time for Ludwig to begin preparation for his upcoming fight against Josh Neer.

Not that Ludwig’s focus for Friday’s bout against Neer would have been hindered by his ongoing dispute, but this recent development could certainly give “Bang” some incentive to go out and give back to the UFC brass by putting on a show for the fans.

The UFC makes their grand debut on FX this Friday.

The event will be highlighted by an exciting lightweight matchup featuring Melvin “The Young Assassin” Guillard against Jim Miller.

Both fighters have hit a stumbling block recently in their careers.

Guillard was on his way up the lightweight rankings with five straight wins, including three finishes. That was until he ran in to Joe Lauzon at UFC 136. Guillard was submitted via rear-naked choke in the first round.

Miller was also on the doorstep of a lightweight title shot when he was matched up against former WEC lightweight champion Ben Henderson. Henderson was able to pull off the decision victory over Miller and is going on to face Frankie Edgar for the UFC lightweight championship.

Both lightweights will be looking to get back on track to a title shot, but they’ll need to get through one another first.

Here are five things to watch for during the main event.

While the card looks like a fantastic display of free fights and a brilliant choice for all fight fans and observers to enjoy, the inner MMA nerd and would-be pundit in most of us is still forced to live with one crushing detail: Some of these guys are in danger of being served their walking papers with a loss this Friday night in Tennessee.

Luckily, the list is not a very long one (actually, there are only three surefire ones, with two that might or might not get the boot with a loss).

For your viewing pleasure and heart-ripping entertainment, here are five of the men fighting for their jobs at UFC on FX: Guillard vs. Miller this Friday night!

(Don’t get your hopes up; Guillard is not on the list.)
