And Now He’s Retired: Jorge Rivera: CagePotato

“Fortunately, Jorge Rivera knows his limits as an athlete, and has officially retired from our sport. He first announced his intention to retire, regardless of the outcome of his fight with Eric “Red” Shafer, on Friday’s edition of MMAJunkie.com radio. After punching out Shafer in the second round of their undercard tilt last night, Rivera made the move official to announcer Jon Anik.”

UFC on FX1 Recap: Miller, Neer and Barry all earn first round stoppage victories: LowKick

“If you’re counting, exactly two of the 10 fights on Friday night’s fight card from Nashville went to decision. As many expected, the main event between Melvin Guillard and Jim Miller was not one of those two fights.”

Falling Action: Best and Worst of UFC on FX: MMAFighting.com

“Is it weird to be sorting through the aftermath of a UFC event on a Saturday morning? A little, though maybe I could get used to it. The first UFC on FX show must be deemed a success, complete with exciting finishes and a solid job by the commentating duo of Jon Anik and Kenny Florian.”

This new episode of The Reem may be the coolest one yet: Middle Easy

“Yeah, I know this new episode of The Reem brings up a valid point. Of course, the point being that I should be hanging out with Alistair Overeem too. Where’s my invite? How do I get to eat an ‘Uber buffet’ like the one that was delivered to Overeem’s hotel in this video? Those are all questions that you don’t have the answer to. Damn you and your inability to answer my rhetorical questions. You guys should be on top of that. I don’t think I can handle any more of this. I’m jumping head first in the tenth episode of The Reem and never looking back. You can join me if you like, just make sure you bring a life vest. Enjoy. “

ESPN’s John Barr on UFC pay report blowback: “It’s not our charge to do your public relations.”: FightOpinion

“If you’re looking for an MMA audio interview-of-the-year candidate, look no further than this very lengthy interview with John Barr of ESPN’s Outside the Lines. If you have a long commute or some down time, it’s well worth taking 90 minutes out of your schedule to listen to the whole thing.”

Dana White: Nick Diaz vs Georges St. Pierre could happen this summer: MMAMania

“Embrace the hate, y’all. Apparently that’s what UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre has done while he’s been on the sidelines rehabbing his torn up knee. And it’s helping the process along nicely, according to UFC President Dana White.”

THQ developer, Wes Bunn, talks about “UFC Undisputed 3”: TheFightNerd

“The Fight Nerd caught up with THQ video game developer, Wes Bunn, to discuss the upcoming release of their new MMA game, “UFC Undisputed 3.” We broke down more details about the new Pride FC mode, including just what exactly it is and how it works with the career mode, as well as details on the overall roster of the game, what is new about this one as opposed to the 2010 edition, and how Alistair Overeem managed to make it into the game on such short notice.”

Miguel Torres-Michael McDonald Set For UFC 145: FightLine

“After being resigned to the UFC following his release for comments made on Twitter, Miguel Torres has found out his next opponent. Torres will meet Michael McDonald on April 21 at UFC 145 in Atlanta, UFC officials announced recently”

Doctors Remove Prehistoric Artifacts From Mark Munoz’s Elbow: MMAConvert

“Wow, when Mark Munoz said he had a bunch of loose bone spurs floating around in his elbow, he wasn’t kidding. It’s no wonder he pulled out of the biggest fight of his career with all of those jamming up his elbow joint.”

Rashad Evans to Phil Davis: “You’re Just a Boy”: 5th Round

“Although two of the nastiest smack talkers in mixed martial arts participated in Friday’s conference call, neither Chael Sonnen nor Michael Bisping provided the verbal warfare the media had anticipated. Thankfully, Rashad Evans (Pictured) and Phil Davis hadn’t spoken since last month’s “Penn State” press conference and picked up right where they had left off.”

And Now He’s Retired: Jorge Rivera

A likeable person who retired from MMA is now seen with a baseball bat? It’s like a photo negative of Jose Canseco!

Far too often, an athlete will stick around past his or her prime, clinging to the idea that he or she can still dominate if given the opportunity. While this isn’t exclusive to mixed martial arts by any means, it’s especially notable in the sport. Fighters are practically bred to believe that when they’re losing, it’s just because they’re in a rut, and when they snap the losing streak, it’s a sign that things are going right for them again. Our acceptance, and often encouragement, of this idea only makes it easier for the fighters themselves to accept it. The end result is usually cringing after watching an older, slower fighter suffer yet another vicious knockout in a half empty arena known for housing a minor league sports team.

The end result is usually cringing after watching an older, slower fighter suffer yet another vicious knockout in a half empty arena known for housing a minor league sports team.

Fortunately, Jorge Rivera knows his limits as an athlete, and has officially retired from our sport. He first announced his intention to retire, regardless of the outcome of his fight with Eric “Red” Shafer, on Friday’s edition of MMAJunkie.com radio. After punching out Shafer in the second round of their undercard tilt last night, Rivera made the move official to announcer Jon Anik.

It’s fitting that Jorge Rivera would retire in a manner similar to Chris Lytle’s retirement, as both fighters had similar careers. Much like Lytle, Rivera was a fan favorite known for his exciting finishes, even though he was a mid-level fighter throughout his career. Jorge Rivera had three runs in the UFC- including a spot on The Ultimate Fighter Four– and finished with an 8-7 record in the promotion (20-9 overall).

A fighter in and out of the cage, Jorge Rivera is a military veteran who still volunteers to visit and train with soldiers overseas. Also, in 2008, his oldest daughter, Jessica, died after a reaction to her medication. Despite nearly retiring from the sport after her death, Rivera went on to win three straight fights against Nissen Osterneck, Rob Kimmons and Nate Quarry.

In celebration of Rivera’s recent string of off camera antics, we’ve posted two of our favorites, as well as an interview filmed after last night’s event. Enjoy.

‘UFC on FX: Guillard vs Miller’ GIF Party: The Finishes & Other Highlights

Guillard choking, in every sense of the word. (Photo: UFC.com)

While the ‘UFC on FX’ debut may have lacked the big names of UFC 142, the fights themselves packed just as much fire-power. For the second straight week, six fighters were able to put away their opponent and double their earnings in less than a round. Punches, chokes, and a torrent of brutal hellbows were all used to send grown men into la-la land, and we’ve got the GIF’s to prove it.

Melvin Guillard lost his second consecutive fight last night, when Jim Miller submitted him in the first round.

The loss completely removes Guillard from lightweight title contention, and now “The Young Assassin” is going to have to pull together an impressive win streak in order to get the lightweight title shot that’s he’s been working towards.

However, Guillard will never make it to the top of the sport if he does not evolve his game, and there are definitely some improvements he needs to make in order to stay competitive.

Josh Neer is doing much better in his second run in the octagon then he did in his first. He just won his second fight in a row last night and did it by choking out fellow octagon veteran Duane Ludwig.

He was able to apply it so quickly and with such strength that Ludwig didn’t even tap and Neer had to inform the referee that his opponent was out.

Not only did Neer get to look like a caring human being on Friday night, but he was able to move his career forward as well.

He had never won two fights in a row in the UFC in his last go with the company so he is in uncharted territory. Even with his impressive win, he still doesn’t have much of a name and needs to build himself s streak before fans see him step up to main event status.

Here are four fights that would be perfect for him.

After losing two straight fights, Pat Barry needed to beat Christian Morecraft just to feel safe about keeping his job.

While some fighters play it safe in those situations, Barry did quite the opposite and went after the bigger Morecraft, earning the first round knockout win and the kick boxer even showed off some ground skills prior to the finish.

It was a huge victory for Barry to become relevant in the UFC’s heavyweight division, but now that he has gotten back into the win column, a whole new batch of opponents are available for Barry to try and brutalize.
