[Video] Another Reason to Cheer Pat Barry: Fighter Shuts Down Rowdy Fan

We love Pat Barry and we’ve never been too shy to admit it. He fights hard in the ring and is hilarious outside of it.

Barry is the type of guy that takes his job deadly serious but not himself. So when someone as self effacing as Barry tweeted Friday night that he confronted a disrespectful fan in the Minnesota arena hosting the UFC on FX 5, we figured he had good reason to.

In the above video Barry gives his account of what, exactly, happened when a fan booed incessantly and lobbed loud insults at the competitors in the Octagon. We’ll let him do the talking but as a quick teaser – it involved several public admonisments from Barry, a bath room confrontation and at least one standing ovation from the near by spectators for “HD.”

The video is pretty sweet (other than Barry insisting on doing yet another of these vlogs shirtless and from an awkward angle, of course) so check it out. And before you ask, yes, this writer does approve of Barry calling “fans” like the one he described as “roaches.”

Video highlights of Barry kicking ass physically after the jump.

The first flyweight title challenger in UFC history was determined in a UFC on FX 5 fight between John Dodson and Jussier Formiga. Dodson utilized a smart game plan to keep the fight standing and eventually scored a knockout in the second round to set up a meeting with champion Demetrious Johnson.

Antonio Silva also picked up a big win in the main event, stifling the up-and-coming Travis Browne. After losing badly to Cain Velasquez in his UFC debut, Silva’s standing as a highly-ranked heavyweight came under question. However, with this win over Browne, Silva has validated the hype that followed him from Strikeforce to the Octagon.

There were plenty of other memorable moments that took place at UFC on FX 5. With another UFC event in the history books, let’s take a look at the best and worst from Friday’s event.

When Dennis Hallman failed to make weight, thus causing his bout with Thiago Tavares to be scrapped, many UFC fans became upset. The failed cut to lightweight was the second time in as many fights for Hallman, and as expected, the fighter was cut from the promotion.

There were reports going around that Hallman was paid not only his show money but also his entire win purse. It was an odd move for someone deemed “unprofessional” by many fight fans. The move lead many to believe there was more to the story, and even Hallman admitted he had some personal issues going on that prevented him from making weight.

Former UFC fighter Frank Trigg was able to get the full details surrounding Hallman’s failed weight cut.

According to the video interview, Hallman was going through a messy custody battle with his wife. Hallman also alleges that she is battling a drug addiction, only further complicating what is already a lengthy process.

Hallman says he endured a nervous breakdown and was taking the fight to gather money he desperately needs to keep his daughter.

It’s a story that any parent can relate to, and anyone without kids can certainly understand that Hallman wasn’t in the state of mind to compete. The good news for Hallman is that the door appears to be open for a return to the Octagon now that he has picked up some wins and made a successful cut.

For all the negative talk about the UFC paying its fighters, perhaps this story will shed some positive light on that particular situation.

John Dodson vs. Jussier Da Silva Was Great—Too Bad Nobody Cares

At UFC on FX 5 Friday night, John “The Magician” Dodson and Jussier Da Silva delivered an underrated fight that saw more a tactical “chess match” style of battle than what some MMA fans regularly witness.

With a crack at reigning UFC flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson up for grabs, Dodson and Da Silva spent time implementing fancy footwork and a hit-and-run plan of attack. Partial reasoning for this came by virtue of Dodson’s takedown defense and respect for the clearly improving striking of Da Silva, who packed on some muscle and showed some good footwork of his own.

In reality, only one real knock can apply somewhat to Dodson’s performance, and that knock comes in the form of Dodson’s flat-footed lateral movement, but in outstriking “Formiga”, Dodson proved to do more with his flat-footed approach than what Formiga could do in attacking from angles.

Unfortunately for both flyweights, the crowd reaction suggests that nobody really cares how much one man did to the other, nor does anyone really care that Dodson knocked Formiga down twice, earned a second-round TKO victory, punched his ticket to a shot at Johnson’s belt and became the first man to finish the Brazilian prospect.

Is that a personal knock on the fighters themselves? Absolutely not.

In fact, let this author state for the record that he is, was and will remain a proponent for the flyweight division and its development in the sport.

At the end of the day, however, a new division by any other name is still a new division and that’s OK. Every active division in the sport needed to develop and earn their reputation as an electrifying source for top-tier MMA action.

Some can point to the cage size or the lack of power when looking at flyweight fights as “point fights,” but the public could’ve easily seen a lack of power as a detriment with the lightweights when the 155-pounders first rose to prominence. I personally find it hard to believe that the Octagon stays the same size for every single fight card, even if it looks huge every now and then.

With time, the flyweights will grow, and when they do, they will grow on fans. For now, however, we must wait and give the flyweights that time to grow.

Until we let the division develop, more fights will deliver tactical chess matches like Dodson vs. Formiga and fewer fans will appreciate the beauty of the action right before our eyes.

The heavyweight division has been shaken up once again.

In a division that features heavy-handed monsters who can finish fights in the blink of an eye, there is little surprise that new contenders come and go as quickly as tween idols like Hillary Duff or Cascada.

While Bigfoot may not have forced us to forget about losses to Daniel Cormier and Cain Velasquez, he certainly showed that he is no fluke.

Also on the card, welterweight contender Jake Ellenberger avenged the first loss of his career, and the flyweight division saw the crowning of the next title contender.

As if that wasn’t enough, we saw shocking upsets, come-from-behind victories, and highlight reel finishes from the main event all the way down to the curtain-jerker.

With UFC on FX 5 in the books, here is a look at the post-fight stock report for every fighter on the card.
