LOUISVILLE, Ky. – When both the winner and loser wind up at the hospital after their main event, it’s pretty hard to argue against Fight of the Night.

Diego Sanchez and Martin Kampmann slugged their way to a bloody 29-28 unanimous decision for Sanchez to close out the UFC’s debut in Kentucky, UFC on Versus 3, on Thursday. When the scores were read, many in the crowd appeared to be stunned at the decision. But perhaps no one was more surprised than Kampmann.

“Yes I did – I thought I won the fight,” Kampmann told Joe Rogan after the fight. “I think I won all three rounds. If you take a look at his face … I definitely feel I won the fight. I was throwing way more clean shots. Diego’s a tough warrior, but I’m very disappointed.”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The UFC handed out its customary post-fight bonus awards on Thursday following UFC on Versus 3. Four of its fighters are a little richer.

Diego Sanchez and Martin Kampmann each took home $60,000 extra for their Fight of the Night performance in the main event at the KFC Yum! Center in downtown Louisville, Ky. The event was the UFC’s debut in Kentucky. Those totals were $20,000 extra, decided by UFC president Dana White.

Brian Bowles and Shane Roller each won $40,000 for their stoppage wins – Bowles for Submission of the Night, Roller for Knockout of the Night.

Just a few months ago, Martin Kampmann fought in arguably the most important match of his career. The UFC had just signed reigning Strikeforce middleweight champ Jake Shields, who was in the midst of a 14-fight win streak, and given him to Kampmann. Shields had already been earmarked for a UFC welterweight title shot, and all he’d have to do is win a single fight.

The Danish fighter nearly foiled the plan. Kampmann frustrated Shields, out-landed him over the three rounds, managed a knockdown, and tried three submissions to Shields’ zero, but when the final decision came, it went in Shields’ favor.

To the UFC’s credit, they didn’t penalize Kampmann (17-4) for the controversial loss, giving him another high-profile fight, this time against Diego Sanchez at UFC on Versus 3.

It’s already Thursday (or, as I like to call it, Friday Eve) and the UFC on Versus 3 fight card is nearly upon us.

If you don’t have your picks planned out according to who did and did not have to get all the way naked just to make weight, why not take a look at how oddsmakers see the action going down and then talk yourself into passionately disagreeing with them? I can’t think of a better way to spend Friday Eve. Seriously, I’ve tried.

As MMA personalities go, Martin Kampmann is a polar opposite from his UFC on Versus 3 opponent Diego Sanchez. While Sanchez is often verbose, introspective and commands the spotlight, Kampmann is concise, restrained and falls into the background. But put him in a cage, and the power hinted at by his “Hitman” nickname starts to come out.

In fact, a case can be made that Kampmann has faced the strongest list of welterweights of any fighter in the world over the last two years, including matchups with Carlos Condit, Paul Daley, Paulo Thiago and Jake Shields. Amazingly, those four had a higher combined win percentage (80.4 percent) at the time they faced Kampmann than UFC champ George St. Pierre’s opponents in that time span had before facing him (77.5 percent).

Last October, Kampmann was just a hair away from ending Shields’ 14-fight win streak, losing in a controversial split decision. Kampmann rarely gets animated in media interviews, but discussing that pivotal loss brings out some of the fire in him.

Give Diego Sanchez the chance to talk about where he’s been and where he’s going, and if he’s in the mood, he’ll rip open a vein and bleed out nearly every detail he can remember, whether thrilling or depressing. The 29-year-old has been a UFC regular for nearly six years, and he’s experienced both the highs and lows of athletic competition during his run in the organization, from winning season one of The Ultimate Fighter and later becoming the lightweight No. 1 contender, to getting stopped for the first time in his career.

He’s equally open about his life outside of the cage, including partying too much, being scammed out of nearly $200,000 and making bad decisions that affected his career.

Sanchez, however, is ready to close the door on his past mistakes while embracing his past successes. Most notably, after a 3-year-plus absence, he returned to the trainer that helped build him: Greg Jackson.

On Thursday, Sanchez faces Martin Kampmann in the main event of UFC on Versus 3 with the belief that his ship is righted.
