Tomorrow night (Sat., June 3, 2017) the UFC will get their jam-packed summer schedule rolling with UFC 212 from the Jeunesse Arena in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The card features the long-awaited featherweight title unification bout between champion Jose Aldo and surging interim champion Max Holloway.

Aldo was last seen winning the interim 145-pound belt, which eventually became the official 145-pound he held since 2011, when Conor McGregor was stripped of the title after not defending it for a year after winning it by knocking out “Junior” in the main event of 2015’s UFC 194. He’ll be faced with an under-the-radar challenge in “Blessed” (who should be anything but), who’s won an incredible 10 straight bouts over some of the best featherweights the sport has ever seen.

In the co-main event, top-ranked women’s strawweight Claudia Gadelha will look to battle her way back to a 115-pound title shot against No. 2 Karolina Kowalkiewicz. Both have recently lost to dominant champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk, but with the champ having almost cleaned out the division aside from expected next contender Rose Namajunas, the winner of this pivotal match-up will find themselves dangerously close to yet another title shot.

Legendary knockout artist and controversial Brazilian MMA pioneer Vitor Belfort will also make his final walk to the octagon when he meets fellow longtime veteran Nate Marquardt in what should be an emotional, hard-hitting affair.

Rounding out the main card, Paulo Barrochinha will meet Oluwale Bamgbose at middleweight while Erick Silva will get the main card rolling against Yancy Medeiros. Find out whom we picked to win at UFC 212 below.

Jose Aldo vs. Max Holloway:

This is one of the more interesting featherweight title bouts we’ve had outside of McGregor vs. Aldo, and a lot of that has to do with how dominant Holloway has looked running through many of the best 145-athletes in the world during his unprecedented win streak.

The Hawaiian “Blessed” has clearly hit his prime as a mixed martial artist after losing to McGregor as a green prospect, an now he’s finally gotten his chance against the best featherweight of all-time, in his native fight-crazed home of Rio. The champ has looked excellent against the more stout wrestling-type fighters he’s made his money against, evident in his two wins over Frankie Edgar and Chad Mendes. Holloway presents an entirely different challenge altogether, as he’s a lanky striker who likes to push the pace with both accurate and powerful punches in volume. Aldo will always have his vaunted leg kicks and hand speed here, and a win over the young upstart would further cement his already decorated legacy.

But I just think that now is Holloway’s time, and he’s ready to come in and throw down with Aldo for a full five rounds by using his length and reach to come out on top.

Prediction: Holloway by fourth-round TKO

PHoto: Jason da Silva for USA TODAY Sports

Claudia Gadelha vs. Karolina Kowalkiewicz:

This match-up of the two top women’s strawweight fighters in the UFC other than Joanna Jedrzejczyk should be a closely-contested co-main event at UFC 212, and Gadelha should be motivated by the support of her home fans.

It’s hard to predict if she’ll look to implement a grappling-centered gameplan to neutralize the world-class Muay Thai skills of Kowalkiewicz, because she did tire a bit after resorting to takedown attempts in her failed title rematch against “Joanna Champion” last July. Gadelha appeared to be holding her own in the striking department against one of the best in the game until she gassed, meaning we could see an entertaining battle of talented 115-pound women.

I still think Gadelha should look to use her grappling and jiu-jitsu edge, however, as meeting the Polish whirlwind in the center of the octagon to throw down in a technical striking contest just isn’t the best gameplan here. Gadelha will have a decided size and strength advantage, and the fight should turn in her favor if she can hold Kowalkiewicz on the mat for any extended period of time – especially in the early rounds. Kowalkiewicz will most likely have her moments on the feet as well, but Gadelha’s toughness should see her edge a gritty victory.

Prediction: Gadelha by unanimous decision

Vitor Belfort vs. Nate Marquardt:

Belfort’s final fight – maybe – is a solid match-up for him here, as he’s finally facing another fading power striker/submission artist in longtime veteran Marquardt. Both may have a little knockout power left in their hands and feet, as that’s usually the last thing to go on fading fighters. If this is indeed “The Phenom’s” last fight (he’s hinted at fighting for Bellator more than once recently), then I expect him to come out guns blazing with nothing to lose. His career has been both decorated and controversial, but why not, I saw he gets one last knockout for the Brazilian faithful in his last UFC bout.

Prediction: Belfort by first-round TKO

Paulo Borrachinha vs. Oluwale Bamgbose:

Borrachinha appears to be a vastly promising 9-0 Brazilian prospect after winning his UFC debut by stoppage in March. He brings an exciting mixture of speed, strength, youth, and athleticism, and Bamgbose is a perfect all-out striker to test his abilities against. He’s lost two out of his last three in the UFC and will need to throw caution to the wind to keep his job. He isn’t likely to attempt to ground Borrachinha to do it, meaning this fight could have “Fight of the Night” written all over it. I think Borrachinha is the more polished and measured striker, so I think he’ll score an impressive early KO.

Prediction: Borrachinha by first-round TKO

Erick Silva vs. Yancy Medeiros:

Silva has no doubt faded after surging into the UFC as one of the hottest welterweights up-and-comers roughly five years ago, but I still think he’ll have the size advantage over lightweight Medeiros in the second Brazilian vs. Hawaiian main card bout at UFC 212. Silva holds a noted edge in the jiu-jitsu department, and will also have the full support of the crowd. Medeiros is tough and can throw down with the best of them, but I think Silva takes this one home for his Brazilian fans.

Prediction: Silva by unanimous decision

Following by far the best card of the year in last weekend’s UFC on FOX 24, the UFC looks to continue building on that momentum with tonight’s (Sat., April 22, 2017) UFC Fight Night 108 from the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.

Like UFC on FOX 24, UFC Fight Night 108 features a bill of talent that while may not be in possession of a ton of star power, nevertheless promises an extremely exciting night of top-to-bottom action for hardcore fight fans.

In the main event, an oddly-booked featherweight bout between top-ranked veteran Cub Swanson and unranked fighter Artem Lobov, who is best known for being a close friend of UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor, became reality following a Twitter spat between the two polar opposites. With both fighters known for their knockout power, the fight could produce fireworks no matter how it ends.

The co-main event also promises to showcase fireworks at 155 pounds, as longtime fan favorite Diego Sanchez will welcome returning former contender Al Iaquinta back to the octagon. The East Coast-bred “Ragin Al” has been out of the game for two years since defeating current top welterweight Jorge Masvidal – albeit by a controversial decision – in April 2015.

The rest of the main card features potential slugfests when Ovince St. Preux meets Marcos Rogerio de Lima, John Dodson facing Eddie Wineland, and welterweight power hitters Jake Ellenberger and Mike Perry slated to kick off the main card. Find out who we picked to win at the under-appreciated event right here.

Cub Swanson vs. Artem Lobov:

Hot off of his 2016 “Fight of the Year”-winning bout versus Doo Ho Choi at UFC 206, Swanson has racked up three straight victories to once again re-establish himself as a legitimate top contender in the UFC. Scoring a fourth straight over Lobov will do nothing for his goal of getting a title fight, but Swanson’s warrior spirit simply wouldn’t let the much less experienced Lobov’s callout fly.

And he probably shouldn’t have, because with far more technical striking, better scrambling, jiu-jitsu, footwork, speed, and a comparable match in striking power, this is a fight that seems to be a potential show of skill living up to Swanson’s “Beautiful Destruction” nickname. “The Russian Hammer” always has a puncher’s chance and is most definitely accurate with his counter shots, but with a 14-12 overall record and one of the steepest steps up in opponent we’ve ever seen in the UFC, this is a mountain that will be ultimately too tough to summit for Lobov. Swanson via TKO, R2.

UFC Fight Night 63

Diego Sanchez vs. Al Iaquinta:

This fight is an intriguing one that could break out into a barrooom brawl atmosphere quickly in Nashville. The tough-as-nails legend Sanchez just won’t go away, and he is in incredible shape at 35 years old, winning three out of his last five fights. Iaquinta was one of the deep lightweight division’s most promising rising talents when he left on his hiatus of two years, but now there are question marks about his fire for the notoriously brutal fight game.

If he’s on, this fight should be “Ragin’ Al’s” to win, as he’s a slightly more technical, younger version of Sanchez with more evolved boxing and better wrestling. “Nightmare” may have the jiu-jitsu edge, but with these two fighters’ propensity for throwing down in a phone booth, this bout has “Fight of the Night” written all over it. I’m picking Iaquinta by unanimous decision.

Ovince St. Preux vs. Marcos Rogerio de Lima:

This fight in the absolutely barren 205-pound arena presents an amazing opportunity for the lesser-known de Lima and a must-win for the sputtering St. Preux. De Lima came in a whopping four pounds overweight, so much of the bout’s outcome could rest on whether or not he’s drained from cutting weight or just bringing a size and weight advantage to the fight. The longer this fight lasts, the more de Lima could potentially fade, but his fight-ending power is a serious factor early on. The odds and experience favor St. Preux, but I’m not sure he can realize his full potential until he goes to a true top-level camp. That’s why I’m taking de Lima with the upset by R1 TKO.

John Dodson vs.Eddie Wineland:

This bout between two of bantamweight’s best knockout strikers is yet another bout with fireworks written all over it despite that starting to sound cliche for this hardly-promoted event. Regardless, both men have a lot to prove tonight, as Dodson will look to rebound from a close split decision loss to John Lineker while Wineland will hunt for a third straight stoppage win. Dodson obviously possesses the speed edge on almost any fighter in MMA, and Wineland has legitimate one-punch stopping power at only 135 pounds. Like Sanchez and Iaquinta, they should both also be willing to throw caution to the wind and engage in a technical brawl. That favors “The Magician” in my eyes, and he shines in match-ups such as these. Dodson by TKO in R2.

Joe Lauzon

Joe Lauzon vs. Stevie Ray:

The well-worn cliche of fights that could turn into war is growing old by now (if that’s even that such a thing in MMA), and a big part of that is this lightweight tilt that is just the latest match-up promising to get the crowd riled up. Much of that is due to Lauzon’s simple presence, as the Boston-based “J Lau” is one of the most exciting fighters in UFC history with his well-known collection of bonuses. Scotland’s Ray is one of lightweight’s least-hyped prospects, so this showcase bout with a legend like Lauzon is his biggest-ever UFC bout by far. I think Lauzon will pressure Ray early on, and this could turn into a chess match of sorts based on how well-rounded both fighters are. But I think we saw Lauzon start to decline ever so slightly in his extremely controversial win over Marcin Held in his last bout, a fight even he admitted he thought he lost, and Ray presents an even more dangerous challenge. Ray by TKO in R3.

The UFC rolls on with this evening’s (Sat., April 15, 2017) UFC on FOX 24 from the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri, and the card presents arguably one of the best ever put together for free television.

In the main event, dominant longtime UFC flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson will seek a record-tying tenth title defense when he meets Wilson Reis in the main event, an accolade that would put him directly on par with all-time great middleweight champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva.

In the co-headliner, touted No. 4 and No. 6 women’s strawweights Rose Namajunas and Michelle Waterson will battle for what may be the next title bout versus the winner of May’s Joanna Jedrzejczyk vs. Jessica Andrade.

Overall, the event presents a stacked card from the main card to the Fight Pass prelims, and should provide fans a hard-hitting night of MMA in the UFC’s first-ever show from K.C.

Find out who we picked to win in the main bouts below:

Photo: Tracy Lee for USA TODAY Sports

Demetrious Johnson vs. Wilson Reis:

This potential record-tying fight for ‘Mighty Mouse’ is a big win, as he’ll cement the foregone conclusion of him joining some of MMA’s all-time greats. Few, if any, are giving Reis a chance to snag the gold from the longtime 125-pound ruler, yet while I think that’s a bit foolish considering his hard-nosed style and submission prowess, it’s also somewhat of a risky fool’s errand to pick against the massive favorite Johnson at this point. I feel “Mighty Mouse” is simply too fast, precise, and technical on the feet, and he should be able to use that to outclass Reis on the scorecards. “Mighty Mouse” by unanimous decision.

MMAFighting.com

Rose Namajunas vs. Michelle Waterson:

This pivotal strawweight co-main event is an intriguing one, as Namajunas has a few questions to answer about her overall mental stat following a disappointing loss to Karolina Kowalkieicz in her last bout over weight months ago. She’s only 24, but has fallen just short in the most impactful bouts of her young career thus far, making this fight with Waterson arguably the most important of her UFC stint so far. On the other hand, Waterson looked calm, cool, and dominant in her first-round win over Paige VanZant, and has all the weight of the UFC promotional machine behind her right now (just like Namajunas did on TUF). In terms of the in-octagon action, I think Namajunas will simply be too big for “The Karate Hottie,” using her superior range and volume striking to avoid takedown and win the fight on the scorecards. Namajunas by unanimous decision.

Photo: Jason Silva-USA TODAY Sports

Jacare Souza vs. Robert Whittaker:

Long the perceived title contender at 185 pounds, Jacare Souza has done nothing but dominate all but one UFC foe on his way to becoming perhaps the most feared grappler in all of mixed martial arts. He’ll face off against a tough rising possible contender in Whittaker, who has looked nothing but spectacular after giving up a drastic weight cut to 170. He’s never faced anyone with anything close to Jacare’s seamless, brutal ground skill, however, and if he fails to keep this bout standing he’ll obviously be in for a long (or short, depending on the way you look at it) night. Souza ended the speculation that he may head to Bellator by recently signing a new eight-fight contract with the UFC, and he looks poised to finally cement a title shot, if that’s even possible in the mess middleweight has become. All he can do is keep winning, and I believe he’ll do that this evening. Souza by submission in R2.

Rafael Suanes-US PRESSWIRE

Jeremy Stephens vs. Renato Moicano:

A potential featherweight firefight will kick off the UFC on FOX 24 main card when knockout puncher Stephens meets rising undefeated prospect Brazilian Moicano. This is a huge bout for both fighters, as Stephens needs to deliver in a spot where he’s favored on a grand stage, while Moicano has little to lose and could storm into the Top 15 or even Top 10 with a win over No.5-ranked “Lil’ Heathen.” It’s a close call – one that is a lot closer than the odds suggest, and I think Moicano has it in him to pull off the upset. I’m not sure he will unless he can get this one to the canvas, however. Stephens should be motivated after nearly knocking out Frankie Edgar in his last fight, so I’m giving him a slight edge. Stephens by R3 TKO.
