UFC welterweight contender Rory MacDonald has long been labelled one of the brightest prospects in MMA. Having been a professional fighter since the fresh young age of 16, MacDonald is now a 22-fight veteran at the age of 27. The Canadian star joined the UFC with a pristine 9-0 record, pegged for title glory from day one. Having his friend and training partner Georges St-Pierre as champion did ‘Ares’ no favours.

The two Canadian welterweights refused to fight each other, and so began MacDonald’s journey as a top contender. Beating the likes of current champion Tyron Woodley, Jake Ellenberger, Demian Maia and BJ Penn–MacDonald quickly cemented himself as a top five stalwart.

MMA: UFC 170 Maia vs MacDonald

Wars & Loss

Two losses to Robbie Lawler, the second a particularly brutal war at UFC 189, seemed to put the brakes on MacDonald’s surge. He returned hopeful after some time off to face Stephen Thompson at UFC Fight Night 89 this past June. ‘Wonderboy’ proved too much for MacDonald, the past few fights perhaps were starting to catch up with the now war torn veteran.

Free agency was on his mind before the Thompson fight, and it turns out ‘The Canadian Psycho’ may well have acted on those urges. Bellator CEO had previously mentioned MacDonald’s name during an interesting snippet. When given the heads up by a Iain Murray over social media, we noticed the rankings now have changed massively. Where MacDonald used to be number three until today, he is no longer to be found in the divisions order:

Bellator Bound?

Make of this what you will. MacDonald had been vocal about his dislike for the controversial Reebok deal, and also toyed with the growing-in-popularity idea of free agency. Of course he may have opted for some time off, but for the number three guy to disappear from the rankings, it’s probably something more.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing situation.

The UFC’s removal of former light heavyweight champion Jon Jones from the official rankings has caused a sizable shift in the pound-for-pound list.

As he awaits his punishment for a potential USADA anti-doping violation that forced him out of his UFC 200 main event with Daniel Cormier, Jones’ absence on the list that he ruled for several years boosted every fighter from No. 4 Conor McGregor down to No. 14 T.J. Dillashaw up a spot, while also allowing featherweight rival Frankie Edgar to re-debut at No. 15.

“Bones” absence from the 205-pound ranks moved everyone from No. 1 Anthony “Rumble” Johnson to No. 13 Patrick Cummins up a spot, and also allowed Misha Cirkunov to debut at No. 14.

There was also a UFC event last weekend, with touted featherweight prospect Yair Rodriguez outlasting Alex Caceres in the main event of the UFC’s Utah debut of UFC Fight Night 92. For the win, Rodriguez moved up to spots to No. 11, forcing Darren Elkins and Dooho Choi downs to the Nos. 12 and 13 spots, respectively.

At middleweight, Yoel Romero moved up an alarming 11 spots to No. 4 after his USADA suspension ended, pushing Vitor Belfort, Anderson Silva, Robert Whittaker, and Gegard Mousasi down to the No. 5-8 spots.

Amanda Nunes, Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey are the only three female bantamweight fighters now ranked ahead of Valentina Shevchenko in the latest UFC rankings.

Shevchenko jumped four spots to No. 3 after besting former champion Holly Holm at UFC on FOX 20 this past weekend. Holm, who suffered her second straight loss, fell to fourth.

Raquel Pennington and Katlyn Chookagian also moved up in the Top-15.

Dooho Choi made his debut in the featherweight rankings, coming in at No. 12. Gilbert Melendez returned to the lightweight Top-15 despite losing to Edson Barboza, who jumped Donald Cerrone for fifth.

Eddie Wineland climbed three spots to 12th at bantamweight following his win over Frankie Saenz, who dropped three spots to 15th.

UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson and UFC bantamweight titleholder Dominick Cruz each moved ahead of Jon Jones on the pound-for-pound list in the latest UFC rankings.

Johnson holds the top spot, while Cruz, the last man to defeat “Mighty Mouse,” is second. Jones fell to third overall.

Eddie Alvarez made his debut at No. 8 on the list after claiming the UFC lightweight title with a first round TKO vs. Rafael dos Anjos, who dropped eight spots to No. 13.

Following his return to action with a win over Mark Hunt, Brock Lesnar debuted in the heavyweight Top-10 at eighth. Lesnar had not competed in MMA in several years, and had not earned a win since 2010.

Kelvin Gastelum climbed six spots to No. 6 at welterweight thanks to his recent win over Johny Hendricks at UFC 200.

Former Bellator champion Will Brooks finds himself ranked after his Octagon debut, coming in at No. 12 at lightweight. Matheus Nicolau debuted in the flyweight Top-15 after his win over John Moraga.

The UFC went through some hectic times last week. The last seven days have featured three fight cards, one major drug test failure, and the changing of hands of two titles. In terms of fights, the week was capped off by the monumental UFC 200 card (July 9, 2016), but the action hasn’t stopped as it was announced earlier today (July 11, 2016) that the promotion had actually been sold for a record setting $4 billion.

Throughout all the chaos, however, the show must go on, and the latest UFC rankings update has been released with some key changes. Most notably, former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon “Bones” Jones, a man many consider to be the greatest fighter of all-time, has lost his spot atop the pound-for-pound list.

Late last week, it was announced that Jones had been flagged by USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) for a possible anti-doping violation. He was then forced out of his scheduled UFC 200 main event bout with Daniel Cormier just days prior. Jones now sits at No. 3 on the list and has been replaced by dominant flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson.

Also, former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar, who made his return to action after nearly five years away from the Octagon by beating Mark Hunt at UFC 200, has entered the rankings. “The Beast” now sits at No. 8.

As expected, Stephen Thompson is now the No. 1 ranked welterweight contender after his win this past weekend at UFC Fight Night 89 over Rory MacDonald.

Thompson, who finished former champion Johny Hendricks earlier this year, earned a decision over MacDonald in the main event.

Donald Cerrone is now ranked in both the lightweight Top-5 and welterweight Top-15. “Cowboy” downed Patrick Cote at the recent card and debuted at No. 14 at 170 pounds. He is still ranked fourth at 155.

The other big mover was Joanne Calderwood, as she jumped five spots to No. 7 at strawweight. Calderwood defeated Valerie Letourneau, who fell four spots to ninth.
