Mayra Bueno Silva shocked fans inside The APEX on Saturday night, scoring a second-round submission victory over former bantamweight world champion Holly Holm at UFC Vegas 77.

The opening five minutes were fairly competitive with Bueno Silva attempting to walk down Holm and land heavy strikes on ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ in hopes of scoring an early highlight-reel knockout. Despite Bueno Silva’s best efforts on the feet, Holm managed to land more strikes in the first five minutes.

Coming out for the second round, Holm looked to close the distance early, pressing her opponent against the fence, but she mistakenly gave up her neck while shooting in for a single leg. Bueno Silva locked in a standing guillotine choke and put the squeeze on Holm, forcing the former bantamweight queen to tap out less than a minute into the second round of their main event clash.

Official Result: Mayra Bueno Silva def. Holly Holm submission (standing guillotine choke) via 0:38 of Round 2.

‘The Lioness’ Amanda Nunes returned to the Octagon on Saturday night for a bantamweight world title showdown in the UFC 289 main event. Nunes set out to defend her 135-pound crown against No. 5 ranked bantamweight contender Irene Aldana inside the Rogers Center in Vancouver.

Irene Aldana struggled to find any offense in the opening round as Nunes asserted her dominance and peppered her opponent with a variety of strikes. Near the four-minute mark of the first round, Nunes got a little overzealous and moved in allowing Aldana to land a solid right that caused a small cut near Nunes’ left eye. While it was arguably the best strike of the round, Aldana’s lack of activity likely lost her the first five minutes.

Rounds two and three saw ‘The Lioness’ continue to land strikes at will as Aldana simply could not find an opening to unleash her hands. In the third, Nunes, opted to mix it up, using her wrestling skills to forcefully take Aldana to the mat on multiple occasions. Clearly down three rounds at this point, Aldana was strongly encouraged by her corner to move forward and let her hands go. Aldana attempted to do just that in the fourth, but her offense was still stagnant as Nunes looked sharp as ever.

With her victory all, but certain, Amanda Nunes took things to the ground in the opening moments of the fifth round. Nunes kept her opponent’s back pinned to the mat through the final five minutes, putting an exclamation point on an incredibly dominant performance inside the Octagon.

Official Result: Amanda Nunes def. Irene Aldana via unanimous decision (50-44, 50-44, 50-43)

Following the contest, Amanda Nunes laid down both of her UFC championships along with her gloves and officially announced that she will be retiring from the sport of mixed martial arts.

Chris Curtis was unable to see following an accidental clash of heads in his featured prelim bout with Nassourdine Imavov at UFC 289 on Saturday night.

‘Action Man’ returned to the Great White North intent on getting back into the win column after coming up short against Kelvin Gastelum in his last outing. In the early going, things were not going well for Curtis who struggled to close the distance against the much taller and lengthier Imavov. The first round saw Imavov put his wrestling skills to work, muscling Curtis down to the canvas and narrowly locking in a rear-naked choke as the first round came to a close.

Round two saw both fighters on their feet and exchanging strikes, but as Imavov moved in to clinch Curtis against the fence, their heads clashed with Curtis getting the worst of it. The referee immediately paused the action as Curtis began bleeding over his right eye. After a few minutes, Curtis could be heard repeatedly explaining that he could not see. As a result, Jason Herzog called a stop to the action and dubbed the bout a no-contest due to an accidental clash of heads.

Official Result: Chris Curtis vs. Nassourdine Imavov is ruled a no-contest following an accidental headbutt at 3:04 of Round 2.

Mackenzie Dern calls for fight with Rose Namajunas following UFC Vegas 73

Mackenzie Dern announced her return to form this weekend in her violent showcase against Angela Hill and already has her eyes set on a former UFC champion in her quest for a title shot.

American-Brazilian BJJ specialist Mackenzie Dern was back to her brilliant best this weekend as she put on a well-rounded clinic in the UFC Apex-based main event against the ever-game Angela Hill that earned the pairing fight of the night.

With an altogether more aggressive style than we are used to, Dern’s arsenal of weaponry was on full display, scoring knockdowns on the feet, as well as a newfound ground-and-pound assault that adds to her already considerable BJJ attacks on the mat.

What’s more, Mackenzie Dern maintained her level throughout the five rounds, always looking to cause damage. So impressive was her performance, that many on social media were quick to note that should she maintain this amount of pressure and violence with consistency, Dern may yet hold a belt in the strawweight division.

Mackenzie Dern calls out Rose Namajunas

There may be no quicker route to a title shot than the one Dern has chosen, through Rose Namajunas. The two-time former champion is yet to be seen n the cage since her disappointing loss to Carla Esparza back at UFC 274, in May of 2022. Many have questioned whether “Thug Rose” has much interest in returning, but that didn’t stop Dern from shooting her shot. Speaking to Michael Bisping post-fight, Dern told him of her desire to test herself against the divisions elite:

“I don’t know what Rose is up to, but if she’s going to continue fighting, I want to fight Rose,” Dern told cage side commentator Michael Bisping.

“I’ve never fought an ex-champion. I feel like I could have that opportunity now.”

Mackenzie Dern has now stepped into the cage 11 times under the UFC banner, but Rose Namajunas would certainly be by far the biggest of her blossoming career.

Who do you think wins, Dern or Namajunas?

No. 8 ranked contender Mackenzie Dern looked to continue her climb up the strawweight rankings as she squared off with the always-active Angela Hill in the UFC Vegas 73 main event on Saturday night. Hill, sitting in the No. 14 spot in the rankings, had a chance to thrust herself into the division’s top ten, should she leave The APEX with arguably the biggest win of her mixed martial arts career.

Both women came out ready to throw hands from the opening bell. Surprisingly, Dern appeared to have the advantage on the feet which allowed her to put pressure on Hill early. Throwing ‘Overkill’ off-balance with some beautiful striking, Dern was able to take things to the mat where she nearly locked in an arm bar, but simply ran out of time in the opening round.

Hill was able to slow things down and potentially even things up in the second round, but the pace most certainly picked up again in the third with Dern landing a massive knee that rocked Hill. Dern took the opportunity to drag Hill to the canvas once again and easily slipped into a full mount. Dern delivered an onslaught of strikes, but Hill continued moving and defending, preventing the ref from stepping in. Miraculously, Hill survived the round.

The final 10 minutes of the contest was all Dern as the Brazilian jiu-jitsu beauty took Hill down at will and punished her for a majority of the remaining two rounds en route to a unanimous decision victory.

Official Result: Mackenzie Dern def. Angela Hill via unanimous decision (49-43, 49-44, 45-44)

Joaquin Buckley earned himself another highlight reel victory on Saturday night, blasting Andre Fialho with a perfectly-timed head kick in the second round of their UFC Vegas 73 clash.

After dropping back-to-back bouts against Nassourdine Imavov and Chris Curtis at middleweight, Buckley made the drop to 170 for his bout with Andre Fialho. Both men walked into the matchup in need of a victory. After nearly two rounds of action, it was ‘New Mansa’ who would have his hand raised, blasting Fialho with a vicious head kick with less than a minute left in the second. Fialho crashed to the canvas as referee Kerry Hatley rushed in, but stopped short of calling for the stoppage. That encouraged Buckley to land a nasty uncontested hammer fist, at which point Hatley shoved Buckley away and signaled for the stoppage.

With the victory, Buckley moved to 6-4 under the UFC banner and 16-6 overall. Fialho fell to 2-4 inside the Octagon, 16-7 overall. Fialho has now lost three straight.

Official Result: Joaquin Buckley def. Andre Fialho via KO (head kick) at 4:15 of Round 2
