Jorge Masvidal confirms retirement from MMA loss to Gilbert Burns UFC 287 Highlights

Gilbert Burns scored one of the biggest wins of his career on Saturday night in the co-main event of UFC 287.

Emanating from Miami-Dade Arena, the crowd was firmly behind Burns’ opponent Jorge Masvidal, but it wasn’t enough to bring him back into the win column against the No. 5 ranked welterweight contender.

Both fighters took a very measured approach in the early going with Jorge Masvidal working the calf kick. Burns also remained cautious, respecting Masvidal’s power. As we got to the four-minute mark, both fighters began to let their fists fly with Burns landing a solid right hand. Burns followed that up with a lightning-quick late-round takedown and dropped a series of hammer fists as the first-round bell sounded.

In the opening seconds of the second round, Burns landed a left hand that sat Masvidal down. ‘Gamebred’ quickly got back to his feet, but found himself pulled off the ground and slammed to the ground with Burns sitting comfortably in top position. Masvidal was able to work his way back up and separate with 30 seconds to go, but by then there was not much he could do to swing the round in his favor.

Gilbert Burns came out in the third taking his time, but by the two-minute mark, he began throwing heavy leather and caught Masvidal clean with a big right hand. Burns delivered a three-punch combo that backed Masivdal to the fence. Gamebred’ encouraged Burns to keep coming forward, but Burns refused to take the bait and instead initiated a clinch with 90 seconds to go. Burns managed to get Masvidal to the mat and was able to keep him there through the end of the contest.

Official Result: Gilbert Burns def. Jorge Masvidal via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)

Kevin Holland got back into the win column in a big way on Saturday night during the UFC 287 main card.

Emanating from Miami-Dade Arena, Kevin Holland delivered another memorable performance that ended with him scoring a highlight-reel-worthy knockout of his Argentinian opponent, Santiago Ponzinibbio. Throughout the first two rounds, Holland took a much more measured approach, opting to utilize his length and reach advantage. To combat that, Ponzinibbio brilliantly attacked the lead leg of Holland in an effort to disrupt his movement.

The strategy worked well for Ponzinibbio throughout the first 13 minutes of the contest. With less than two minutes to go in the bout, Ponzinibbio threw another calf kick that was caught by Holland. Taking his opponent off balance, Holland uncorked a massive left hand that caught Ponzinibbio clean and immediately rendered him unconscious. Before he could do any further damage, the referee stepped in, calling for the stoppage.

Ponzinibbio protested the stoppage, but the replay clearly showed that his lights were out as he crashed face-first to the canvas.

Official Result: Kevin Holland def. Santiago Ponzinibbio via KO (strikes) at 3:16 of Round 3

On Saturday night, Marlon Vera and Cory Sandhagen stepped into the main event spotlight for a high-stakes bantamweight showdown at The AT&T Center.

Going into the bout riding a four-fight win streak, ‘Chito’ Vera finds himself on the cusp of a UFC bantamweight title opportunity. Hoping to stop Vera’s momentum was Sanghagen, a division staple who has gone 3-2 in his last five with wins over Marlon Moraes, Frankie Edgar, and Song Yadong. ‘The Sandman’ could add his name to a very short list of potential title contenders with a win over the No. 3 ranked Marlon Vera.

As expected, Cory Sandhagen was the aggressor early as Vera is a notoriously slow starter inside the Octagon. Sandhagen put his calf kicks to work early, but picked up the pace nearly the halfway point of the first, moving in for a takedown. Sandhagen works Vera to the canvas and immediately begins firing away with heavy shots and slicing elbows through the end of the round. Sandhagen’s aggressiveness continued in the second with him pushing the pace and taking things to the ground a minute into the round. Vera was able to get back to his feet with 80 seconds left in the round but offered little offense after 10 minutes.

Marlon Vera picked up the pace in the third, mixing up his kicks and punches in an attempt to make the fight much more competitive. However, Sandhagen was still clearly in control, mixing up his strikes with the occasional takedown attempt. As a result, Vera was unable to truly get his offense going through the third and fourth rounds. In the final five minutes, Sandhagen relied heavily on his wrestling early, tying up and taking down Vera. ‘Chito’ fought his way back up, but was still unable to land anything dangerous. With 10 seconds left, Vera finally kicked it into high gear, but by then it was too little too late.

Official Result: Cory Sandhagen def. Marlon Vera via split decision (47-48, 50-45, 49-46)

Former UFC bantamweight champion Holly Holm returned to the Octagon for the first time after signing a brand new six-fight contract with the UFC that will likely see ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ stay with the Las Vegas-based promotion until her retirement. Eager to get one more shot at UFC gold, Holm stepped inside the cage with Yana Santos.

Making her first walk to the Octagon in nearly two years, Santos was determined to score the biggest win of her career. A victory that would most certainly move her into the division’s top five.

Yana Santos came out immediately aggressive, throwing a combination before pressuring Holm to the fence and forcing a clinch. They finally separated near the halfway point of the opening round, but after a couple of quick calf kicks, Santos reinitiated the clinch. Holm was able to break free and began to utilize her footwork as Santos continued to be the aggressor. Holm landed a couple of solid push kicks to the face of Santos and ended the round in side control after Santos ate a right hand after rushing in for an attack.

Santos came out with the same aggressive style in the second and quickly paid for it with a push kick to her midsection that sat her down. Holm allowed her up but then followed up with a solid takedown, establishing the top position. She maintained control throughout the remainder of the second, peppering Santos with a series of strikes, elbows, and shoulder thrusts.

Less than a minute into the third round, Holly Holm was able to secure another takedown and easily mounted Santos. Holm spent the majority of the round fishing for a submission and nearly cinched in a rear-naked choke, but Santos was able to get back to her feet and separate with 50 seconds to go. By then, it was too late as Holm moved in and secured her fourth takedown of the fight moments before the final horn sounded.

Official Result: Holly Holm def. Yana Santos via unanimous decision (30-26, 30-27, 30-27)
