The viewership numbers for UFC Fight Night 119 (UFC Sao Paulo) have been released.

The event, which took place on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo, Brazil and was headlined by middleweight bout between former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Lyoto Machida and Derek Brunson, had to go head-to-head with the World Series.

As a result of this, UFC Sao Paulo did its lowest numbers ever for a live primetime show on FOX Sports 1. The show averaged 588,000 viewers.

The previous low was a Wednesday night show on July 13, 2016, that was headlined by John Lineker vs. Michael McDonald. Before that, the low was brought on by a May 31, 2014 event also in Sao Paulo that was headlined by Stipe Miocic vs. Fabio Maldonado. Both shows did 609,000 viewers.

Keep in mind that FOX Sports 1 is in fewer homes this year due to cord cutting and streaming.

The fourth game of the World Series brought in 15,400,000 on FOX. The UFC also had to go up against several college football games on Saturday night, which were also down in viewership.

Viewership peaked (671,000 viewers) during Colby Covington vs. Demian Maia fight, which had three rounds to build the audience instead of 2:30 for Brunson vs. Machida.

The prelims pulled in 198,000 viewers on Fox Sports 2 and were headlined by Vicente Luque’s second-round stoppage of Niko Price. The reason that FS2 aired the prelims was due to FS1 airing the Minnesota vs. Iowa game

The post-fight show did 265,000 viewers on FS1 while the pre-fight show on FS2 did 54,000 viewers. The last UFC Fight Night event to air on FS1 was back on September 17th that was headlined by Luke Rockhold vs. David Branch. That show averaged 872,000 viewers, and the post-fight show did 361,000 viewers.

Fight fans will not have to wait long for more UFC action as UFC 217 is slated to take place on Saturday, November 4th in New York at Madison Square Garden. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Former two-time title contender Demian Maia is currently in a rough stretch in his pro-MMA (mixed-martial-arts) career.

He has now suffered back-to-back losses for the first time since 2014. Just hours after he lost a unanimous decision to Colby Covington in the co-main event of UFC Sao Paulo, which took place on took place on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil on FOX Sports 1, he issued a statement on his official Twitter account.

In the post, he gave props to Covington while admitting a few mistakes he has done in the welterweight bout. He also made it known that he is already looking forward to his next fights inside the Octagon.

Maia’s (25-8) decision to drop from middleweight to welterweight in 2012 and since then, he has dropped to 10-4 at that weight.

After the fight, he went on record by making it known that he is considering to retire. It should be noted that Maia has one fight left on his deal with the UFC.

“I would like to thank everyone’s support in one more step in my path,” Maia wrote. “The big lesson in sports is knowing that competing always brings lessons, and we have to be grateful in victory and in defeat for the learning.

I did my best, made a few mistakes and got a little excited, which might have hampered the execution of my strategy, but that doesn’t take the merit away from my opponent, who deserved the victory, and I leave with my head held high, knowing that I have done the best I could, and I move forward onto the next step of the journey. Thank you all!”

Colby Covington is in some hot water with the UFC over his controversial post-fight interview at UFC Sao Paulo.

As seen at the event on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in Sao Paulo, Brazil, the welterweight fighter pulled off a massive win over two-time title contender Demian Maia in the co-main event.

After the fight, he said that Brazil was “a dump” and its inhabitants to be “filthy animals.” These comments were in line with his statements he made about the country in the lead-up to the fight.

Obviously, it didn’t sit well with fight fans who attended the event. Thus, they hurled garbage at Covington as he left the Octagon to make his way to the backstage area.

UFC senior vice president David Shaw let it be known at the post-fight presser that officials are aware of the situation and that they will make a decision on how to address Covington’s behavior soon. For someone who wants a title shot, this could be a major problem.

“Overall, I thought the fan reactions throughout the course of the night were fantastic generally,” Shaw said at the evening’s post-show presser.

“Brazilian fans are obviously very intelligent, very knowledgeable about the sport, very scrutinizing, and generally it was loud and energetic and boisterous the whole time.

In terms of the fan reactions with Covington fighting, there’s no way for us to support any fans throwing items at any staff or any fighters. However, having said that, we are taking the situation with Covington very seriously. It’s already being reviewed by our code of conduct committee, and it’s something that we are not very happy about.”

Keep in mind that this isn’t the first time that fighters have talked trash about Brazil while building up the hype for a fight against Brazilian athlete. Two-time UFC middleweight title contender Chael Sonnen targeted opponent Anderson Silva’s home country.

Also, UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor did a bit of trash talk while he was building up his fight with then-featherweight champion Jose Aldo. McGregor stated on record by stating, “I own this town, I own Rio de Janeiro. I would invade his favela on horseback and would kill anyone who wasn’t fit to work, but we’re in a new time, so I’ll whoop his ass instead.”

Neither Sonnen nor McGregor was given any sort of punishment from the UFC. It should be noted that their comments were aimed at their opponents compared to Covington who aimed his comments directly at the Brazilian audience.

“It’s not for me to say at this point what could possibly happen, but we’ll be reviewing it over the course of the weekend and early next week,” Shaw said.

Covington issued a statement on the situation by clearing up his intentions:

UFC middleweight star Derek Brunson is coming off one of the biggest wins of his career.

As seen at UFC Sao Paulo on Saturday night at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil, Brunson finished former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida by strikes in the first round.

Shortly after that fight, Brunson called out former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold.

“It just kind of came to me at the last minute,” Brunson said at the post-fight presser to the media (transcript courtesy of MMA Junkie). As for the reason for the matchup? it’s simple to Brunson. Rockhold is an ex-champion and wins over ex-champions get you title opportunities.

Make no mistake about, Brunson’s performance against Machida did advance the interest in seeing him fight for the UFC gold.

“He’s a top-level guy,” Brunson said of Rockhold, who just so happens to be unbooked after scoring a win over ex-WSOF champion David Branch this past month. “I think it would be a great matchup.

I think I can put hands on him, touch that chin, and I could put him down also. A win over Rockhold would definitely get me next for a title shot.”

Keep in mind that the UFC middleweight division is a bit backlogged due to the fact that UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping is slated to defend his title against former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre at UFC 217 next weekend.

Then, interim champ Robert Whittaker will unify the belt against the winner. Brunson stated that the MMA media regularly disregards his accomplishments in the UFC.

For right now, he just wants to continue to try to prove himself to the world that he is an elite fighter. And if he stays patient, big opportunities will arise sooner than later.

“I’ve definitely had a crazy career, but I’m starting to put it together and take my time,” Brunson said. “I can really do some damage if I just take my time.”
