Dana White

UFC president Dana White was not pleased with referee Herb Dean last night.

During the co-main event of UFC Vegas 42, Marcos Rogerio de Lima blitzed Ben Rothwell in their heavyweight contest for a quick 32-second knockout victory.

However, that was after Dean hesitated to call off the fight before ultimately doing so when Rothwell was dropped to the ground.

It was yet another blunder for Dean who has made them much more frequently in recent years. Dan Hardy — one of Dean’s staunchest critics — made sure to comment on it.

Dana White: Dean Needs To ‘Stop Touching Guys’

While White usually doesn’t comment on Dean, he had to after this event.

“He’s gotta pull the trigger and stop touching guys – don’t touch them unless you’re going to stop the fight,” White said at the post-fight press conference. “When they played it back in slow motion, he’s kind of like, dancing, like he doesn’t know what to do, whether he’s going to jump in or not jump in.

“I like him personally – he’s a nice guy. But he’s got to stop touching people until he’s ready to stop the fight.”

What do you think of Herb Dean as a referee?

Dana White Herb Dean

UFC President Dana White had a few stern words for Herb Dean after yet another controversial stoppage from the veteran referee.

The incident came in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 32 between Ben Rothwell and Marcos Rogerio de Lima. De Lima rocked Rothwell early, and while pummelling him relentlessly against the cage, Dean stepped in to call off proceedings. He then, however, stepped back and allowed the fight to continue, before stepping back in to call the fight off once more, just 32 seconds into round one.

While one of the UFC’s most experienced referees, Dean has recently courted much criticism for a series of botched stoppages. Former UFC welterweight Dan Hardy has been his most fierce critic, with the duo having been involved in a much-publicized on-air squabble in July last year at UFC Fight Island 3. In that incident, Hardy protested Dean’s reluctance to stop the fight between Jai Herbert and Francisco Trinaldo, with the former sustaining unnecessary damage as a result.

Dana White Lashes Herb Dean For Controversial Stoppage

At the UFC Vegas 42 post-fight press conference, Dana White didn’t mince words when asked to weigh in on Dean’s botched stoppage. While the UFC President conceded that the fight should have been stopped anyway, he warned the veteran referee to improve his decision-making, alluding to Dean’s recent track record of less than optimal refereeing.

“Herb needs to stop touching guys unless the fight’s over,” said White. “He goes in and grabs [Ben Rothwell] by the waist, and then decides, ‘Oops.’ The good thing about this one was that fight should’ve been stopped when he stopped it. And you didn’t see Ben jumping up and arguing about it. That fight should’ve been stopped. But he’s gotta pull the trigger and stop touching guys. Don’t touch them unless you’re gonna stop the fight. And when they played it back in slow motion, he’s kinda like dancing, like he doesn’t know what to do, whether he’s gonna jump in or not jump in.”

White however tempered his critique of Dean, who made his debut as a UFC referee in 2004, by mentioning that the man once regarded as the gold standard of MMA refereeing is still, at least on a personal level, in his good books.

“Yeah, I like him personally. He’s a nice guy. But he’s gotta stop touching people until he’s ready to stop the fight,” said White.

What do you think? Is it time for Herb Dean to step down as a UFC referee, or is he still one of the best?

The UFC Vegas 42 bonuses have been released.

The event took place in Las Vegas, Nevada at the UFC Apex facility. Headlining the card was a clash between Max Holloway and Yair Rodríguez. This fight saw an incredible first round of action. Yair was doing damage with kicks to the lead leg of Holloway and caught him a few times with head kicks. Halloway was putting together combos and even stunned him a few times.

Yair was bleeding under his left eye, but did manage to get some brief takedowns although he couldn’t keep him there. Moving along to the third round, Holloway dropped him then did some damage with strikes from full and back mount. Yair showed his toughness. They later exchanged takedowns. Holloway opened the fourth round with a guillotine choke, but Yair went down and Max gave up the attempt. They continued to exchange to the bell.

The co-main event saw more action between Ben Rothwell and Marcos Rogerio. It didn’t last long, in fact, it only lasted 32-seconds. Marcos came out and they got into a firefight. Marcos stunned him then they just turned it into a slugfest with strikes being thrown until Marcos caught him and Rothwell dropped. A very impressive win for Marcos over a tough veteran in Rothwell.

Alexander Volkanovski

UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski could face a familiar foe for his next title defense after Max Holloway defeated Yair Rodriguez in a five-round war at UFC Vegas 42.

Many fight fans thought that Holloway would put on another one-sided performance as he did against Calvin Kattar, but Rodriguez proved to be a dangerous opponent and threw heavy shots that landed from start to finish. Volkanovski, as the featherweight king, paid close attention to what was considered to be a consensus No. 1 contender bout.

After Rodriguez had him in trouble in the opening minutes of the fight, Holloway was able to outlast him and earn a unanimous decision win. After the main event, Volkanovski had this to say about the bout and Holloway’s win.

Alexander Volkanovski could face Max Holloway once again

“Great fight!” Volkanovski said. “Very competitive, well done lads.”

Volkanovski could defend his belt against Holloway in a trilogy for his next fight. Most recently, Volkanovski defeated Brian Ortega at UFC 266 in a fight that was also a Fight of the Year contender.

Fans have clamored for a Volkanovski vs. Holloway rematch for months. Volkanovski earned back-to-back controversial split decision victories over Holloway.

A third fight between the two featherweight legends seems like the fight to make. But, Holloway could also opt to wait for a ‘money fight’ against Conor McGregor, instead of a third title fight against Volkanovski.

Rodriguez was returning after a two-year hiatus from competition. Despite the loss, he remains in the title picture and his stock has risen after taking Holloway the distance.

Volkanovski first earned the title over Holloway at UFC 245. Before that, he took out featherweight contenders Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes on the way to the belt. He’s neck-and-neck with Holloway at arguably the greatest featherweight champion in UFC history.

Do you think Alexander Volkanovski vs. Max Holloway 3 should happen next?

Max Holloway

Former undisputed UFC featherweight champion, Max Holloway has solidied his status as the #1 ranked contender in the promotion’s division — outlasting the #3 ranked challenger, Yair Rodriguez with a unanimous decision victory in a true Fight of the Year contender to close out UFC Vegas 42.

Starting brightly against the former champion, Holloway in the opening two rounds — Rodriguez consistently chopped away at Holloway’s orthodox lead with a series of thudding calf kicks, as well as firing out decent hands in the close quarters of the bout.

However, as per usual it seems when discussing a fight involving the Hawaiian, Holloway began to pour on the pressure from the third frame onward, scoring a takedown after Rodriguez appeared to injury his left foot from a miscued calf kick attempt.

From there on out, Holloway began to extend his lead over the Chihuahua native on the judge’s scorecards to land his second consecutive unanimous decision victory. Off the back of the win, Holloway maintained he was in pole position to meet with former two-weight gold holder, Conor McGregor in a rematch, although a featherweight title trilogy bout with Alexander Volkanovski also looms large.

Below, catch the highlights from Holloway’s judging win over Rodriguez.

Khaos Williams

Rising welterweight contender, Khaos Williams was forced to the third round against Miguel Baeza — and even faced some worrying adversity of his own before landing a stunning knockout victory with just over a minute elapsed in the final frame.

Williams, a renowned knockout artist, found himself almost trapped in a nasty heel hook and a kneebar with a minute remaining in the first frame, but managed to successfully defend from the dynamic Baeza, as well as landing a couple of heavy ground strikes as Baeza attacked his lower limbs.

Preventing the judge’s involvement for the third time in his five Octagon walks, Williams rushed forward during a firefight early in the third with Baeza — cracking the latter with a winging right hook, flattening him to score his seventh career knockout triumph from a total 13 career wins.

Catch the highlights from Williams’ eye-catching knockout win over Baeza, below.
