When Dana White decided to sign James Toney to a UFC contract, there were a few MMA pundits of the ‘purist’ mentality that didn’t care for the deal. After all, White had always maintained that he would never get lulled into such a fight, one of the ‘freak show’ variety, where a dude with next to no MMA training comes in only to get drubbed (see Don Caras Jr. vs. Mirko “Cro Cop”- yes “Junior’s” wearing a wrestler’s mask but the bout, particularly the finish, is very, very, real…)
While Toney has been talking a big game and fake dialling 911, it was interesting to see WBO Heavyweight Champion David Haye say this week that “the wrestling aspect (in MMA) ruins your punching power” and that Toney is “delusional” for thinking he’ll beat Randy Couture. When Dana White was asked to comment on Haye’s comments while conducting an interview on 106.7 The Fan, he stated (thanks to Bloody Elbow):
“He is very right. It’s a freak show. I said I’d never put on a freak show fight and I’m doing it. Listen, this guy [Toney] chased me around the country saying bad things about the sport. If he wants to get his ass whooped, I’m gonna let him.”… “Here’s what I expect; the bell rings, they come to the center of the Octagon, circle each other for a little bit, Randy double legs him, puts him against the fence, squashes his head and the fight is over.”
White went on to say that Toney has a puncher’s chance, and could catch Couture, “God forbid.” Yes. That wouldn’t be good. To read more of the interview head here.
The UFC may be looking to match Antônio Rogério “Lil Nog” Nogueira (19-3) and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (30-8) against one another this September according to Nogueira’s boxing coach Luis Carlos Dórea.

The UFC may be looking to match Antônio Rogério “Lil Nog” Nogueira (19-3) and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (30-8) against one another this September according to Nogueira’s boxing coach Luis Carlos Dórea.
Dórea spoke to Tatame.com and fell short of confirming an agreement to face the former UFC light-heavyweight champion.
“It’s set that he’ll be back in September, and rumors point that his opponent might be Quinton Jackson. It’d be a great fight for Rogério, he’s a former UFC champion and a victory over him will move us pretty close to the title. The UFC only has top athletes and Quinton Jackson is really dangerous. It’d be a great fight, but the UFC didn’t confirmed anything yet”, Dórea said.
There had been some talk about matching Jackson against Lyoto Machida, but it isn’t something “Rampage” wants as he’s looking to face a more exciting opponent and may have one in “Lil Nog.”

Yoshihiro Akiyama will once again travel the Pacific Ocean and descend into the United States to make his second journey inside the octagon under the UFC banner for Saturday’s UFC 116 event.
“Sexyama” is headed back to where it all began. The MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Well, certainly in one respect. […]

UFC light heavyweight fighter Tito Ortiz is looking at returning to the ring in October or November of this year, according to a recent interview with Sherdog.com. The popular and yet strangely unpopular fighter has been fighting series back injuries and is coming off another surgery to repair damage done to disks. While it will be a short time before he can train completely, it seems that Ortiz has everything planned for his return to training:
“I get a little tingling sensation down my arms and the back of my neck but I guess that’s normal because of all the nerves are reconnecting,” he said. “I feel really good, though. The soreness I have now is from lifting weights. I haven’t had this kind of soreness in a while. July will really be the test for me because I’ll be wrestling and stuff and starting to get into it. On July 1, I’ll start doing jiu-jitsu and start drilling. Nothing live — just drilling to get my body back into shape.”
Many MMA fans have questions about whether Ortiz will ever be able to compete at the highest level again, but there’s no doubt that he can still sell tickets. The UFC certainly could put on another Tito Ortiz vs. Chuck Liddell match which would no doubt produce good to great pay per view numbers but it seems premature to speculate. For now Ortiz continues to look to the future to return to the Octagon, healthy and ready to make a run at the light heavyweight title.

After a difficult bidding period in which Jake Shields was asking for more money than Scott Coker thought he was worth, Strikeforce released their middleweight champion yesterday, putting Shields on the open market. Shields’s Strikeforce contract ended after his April title defense against Dan Henderson, which allowed other organizations to make bids on his services. Strikeforce was in the matching stage of the process, and had the option to meet any competing offers, but ultimately decided that letting Shields walk was their best option.
As Scott Coker said on MMA Weekly radio, "The numbers, there was a big gap between what we thought was real, and what we thought was going to work, and I call that the numbers dance. It is what it is, and we’re going to probably be moving forward with that tournament."
Tensions between Shields and Strikeforce have reportedly been strained since he appeared at WEC 48, sitting next to UFC president Dana White, who mouthed "he’s mine" at the camera. Strikeforce may have even tried to block Shields from attending Saturday’s Fedor vs. Werdum show.
