Kenny Florian Heaps Praise on Evan Dunham

It may have been overshadowed by Rich Franklin’s one-punch KO of Chuck Liddell at UFC 115 (it’s pretty hard to top the magnitude of that…Liddell was on Entourage after all…) but another of the card’s big stories was Evan Dunham’s decision win over Tyson Griffin, as it spoke volumes about the undefeated fighter’s potential.  The Oregon […]

The Oregon fighter has now gone 4-0 in the Octagon and also holds wins over TUF winner Efrain Escudero, Marcus Aurelio, and Per Eklund; people are starting to talk…

Now, if you haven’t closely monitored Dunham’s career and don’t want to take our word for it, consider what Kenny Florian said recently on ESPN’s MMA Live (thanks to MMA Fighting for the quote).

“Dunham beat one of the most successful lightweights out there, one of the toughest lightweights out there, and now he is an upper-echelon lightweight, no doubt about it,” Florian said.

Florian also credited Dunham for his jiu-jitsu and takedowns, praising the lightweight for his ability to take Griffin down (who knows a thing or two about wrestling) and controlling him there. In other words, based on the performance, it would appear as though Dunham has the tools to give a lot of guys trouble. Just a refresher, Griffin’s only other losses thus far in the UFC came against current champ Frankie Edgar, and former champ, Sean Sherk. Not bad.

Speaking of Florian, the UFC confirmed yesterday that, as expected, he’ll fight Gray Maynard, at UFC 118 in Boston. Wicked awesome no?

Forrest-PetzAn undisclosed injury to Julio Paulino (17-3) has forced the welterweight fighter out of his UFC 116 bout with Daniel Roberts (9-1). Making his return to the UFC will be Forrest Petz (18-7), who has won four straight to make his way back to the octagon.

Petz last appearance at a UFC event was back in October of 2007 where he lost a split decision to Josh Burkman at UFC 77, which was his fifth straight bout with the promotion going 2-3. Since that time he’s gone 5-2, including the four straight victories having fought for various promotions. His last pro fight was at the recent “Moosin: God of Martial Arts” event in May, where he earned a unanimous decision over Ralph Johnson.

Roberts is coming off the first professional loss of his career to John Howard after making his UFC debut at the UFC on Versus 1 event this past March. He was KO’d in the first round of that fight. Roberts has won seven of his nine victories by submission, and has only fought past the first round three times.

Their fight will take place on the preliminary card of the event.

“UFC 116: Lesnar vs. Carwin” will take place on July 3 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. and is headlined by a heavyweight title unification bout between current champ Brock Lesnar vs. interim champ Shane Carwin.

ufc-Red_200On Thursday, the Ultimate Fighting Championship made it’s official announcement for the promotions first trip to Boston with “UFC 118: Edgar vs. Penn 2.” The even will take place at the TD Garden in Boston, Mass. on Aug. 28.

The event features a UFC lightweight title rematch between current champ Frankie Edgar and former champ BJ Penn, who lost to Edgar in April at UFC 112 via unanimous decision. Co-headlining the Boston show will be a heavyweight matchup featuring UFC legend Randy Couture, who steps into the octagon against boxing champion James “Lights Out” Toney who will make his mixed martial arts debut at the August event.

In a press release from the UFC, it’s president, Dana White, praised the city of Boston and explained how excited he was about a couple of the fighters on the card.

“Without a doubt, August 28th will be one of the highlights of my career, I’m thrilled to bring the UFC to Boston for the first time in our history,” said Dana White, UFC President. “Boston is one of the world’s greatest fight towns, fans only expect the best, and we are bringing it with the rematch between BJ Penn and Frankie Edgar, and the Octagon-debut of boxing legend James Toney vs. one of the greatest UFC heavyweights of all-time, Randy Couture.”

“Frankie pulled off the upset of the year when he beat BJ in April, and I know that both of these guys are coming to Boston with something to prove – Frankie wants to cement his place at the top of the division, and BJ wants to show that his loss was just a fluke – so this is going to be one to remember,” said White.

“Toney is a real fighter, a future Hall of Famer, and the most accomplished boxer ever to fight in the UFC, and I think everyone’s curious to see what he can do against Couture’s wrestling and ground and pound attack. Toney promised me that he’s coming to win, and knowing him like I do, I would never count him out,” said White.

Coinciding with UFC 118 in Boston, will be the third ever UFC Fan Expo which will be held at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston, Mass. on Friday Aug. 27, and Saturday, Aug. 28.

As the world’s premier MMA event, the UFC Fan Expo provides millions of fans the opportunity to experience, celebrate, learn and rub shoulders with some of the most exciting athletes in sports today.
