Dan Henderson Would Only Drop To Middleweight If The UFC Offered Him Anderson Silva

Former PRIDE and Strikeforce champion Dan Henderson (29-8) is in one of those very rare positions of being a top level competitor across two weight classes.

Currently, Henderson is waiting his turn at the UFC light heavyweight strap and will meet the winner of next months Jon Jones versus Rashad Evans title bout.

Despite being 41-years old, Henderson doesn’t feel the itch that a few former No. 1 contenders have felt in the past including Evans and former top lightweight Anthony Pettis.

It’s certain that the UFC has tried to tempt him with other interesting fights, at light heavyweight or even middleweight.

Henderson wants it made clear that he is waiting for a chance to capture UFC gold, and that if he does fight at middleweight it better be against Anderson Silva for the 185-lbs strap.

“I don’t have any real desire to fight at middleweight. The only guy I’d cut weight for is Anderson Silva, win or lose that could still happen.

“But it’s not high up on my list at all. Silva’s the only guy I’d cut weight for. I’ve got the light-heavyweight thing in my mind and that’s it. I’d fight Anderson Silva but I’m only interested in the UFC light-heavyweight title right now.”

The two legends fought back in 2008 at UFC 82 to unify the UFC and PRIDE middleweight titles. Silva would end the match with a second round rear-naked choke.

Currently Henderson is on a four fight win streak and is 7-1 in his last eight bouts. His last win came in November at UFC 139 in one of the best fights inside the Octagon as he earned a unanimous decision over Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua at the San Jose event.

A middleweight bout between Michael ‘The Count’ Bisping (22-4) and Tim ‘The Barbarian’ Boetsch (15-4) has been announced for this July’s upcoming UFC 148 event in Las Vegas.

Promotion officials announced the bout at UFC.com on Monday, indicating that the matchup “could have major implications for the 185 title picture.”

UFC 148 is the first event earmarked for July 2012 and is expected to take place on the seventh at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The pay-per-view event is expected to host the UFC bantamweight title rematch between champion Dominick Cruz and challenger, Urijah Faber.

Bisping is coming off a controversial unanimous decision loss to Chael Sonnen in January at UFC on FOX 2, in a No. 1 contender match. It was the first loss in five bouts for ‘The Count’ who earned four straight victories since losing a decision to Wanderlei Silva at UFC 110. The wins in that streak were against Jason Miller, Jorge Rivera, Yoshihiro Akiyama, and Dan Miller.

Boetsch earned a third round TKO stoppage over Yushin Okami at UFC 144 last month, in one of the biggest comebacks seen in the Octagon. Okami looked to have the fight well in hand, controlling the fight for the first two rounds. Boetsch came out firing in the third, catching ‘Thunder’ with a head kick, which wobbled the Japanese fighter, before using his fists to pull out the come from behind stoppage. The win was ‘The Barbarian’s’ third straight since dropping down to middleweight.

M-1 Champion Vinny Magalhaes Enters Free Agency; UFC Among Top Suitors

Vinny Magalhaes may be coming back to the organization that made him a household name among MMA fans.

Magalhaes was the Season 8 runner up on The Ultimate Fighter, which he lost to Ryan Bader. A subsequent loss to Eliot Marshall gave Magalhaes his walking papers.

Since leaving the UFC, the submission ace has been on an absolute tear. In his last eight bouts, Magalhaes is 7-1 with five wins coming via submission and his only loss coming by way of decision.

In April last year, Magalhaes defeated Viktor Nemkov via submission (mounted gogoplata) to win the M-1 Light Heavyweight Championship. He defended his title in October against Mikhail Zayats.

After the Zayats bout, Magalhaes’ relationship with M-1 really went south. Magalhaes spoke with MMAJunkie.com Radio about why he’s leaving M-1 and the title behind.

“The first thing I said when I heard about it was, ‘I’m never going to fight for these guys again,'” Magalhaes said. “A few months later, that’s still my thought.” (MMAJunkie.com)

The “it” Magalhaes is referring to was official Evgeni Kogan, openly rooting for and coaching Zayats during the bout.

Magalhaes attempted to get out of his contract early but instead chose to wait it out. With his M-1 contract complete, Magalhaes is free to open negotiations with other promotions and there’s a familiar name at the top of his list.

“…we’re negotiating with the UFC right now,” Pacitti said. “There are others, but the UFC is certainly in line. The UFC is definitely attractive.” (MMAJunkie.com)

The UFC likely thinks Magalhaes is an attractive free agent as well, given that he’s a familiar name within the organization and truly brings “world class” skills to MMA.

In the ADCC tournament, Magalhaes was able to defeat defending champion, Fabricio Werdum.

Although Magalhaes did say he is listening to other offers and will take whichever company gives him the best offer, he made no attempt to hide his desire to fight in the UFC.

“Tell me one fighter who doesn’t want to be in the UFC. If he doesn’t want to be in the UFC, then he probably just doesn’t want to fight.” (MMAJunkie.com)

On Monday, officials with the Ultimate Fighting Championship announced a bantamweight bout between Brazilian fighter Renan Barão (28-22, 1NC), the owner of a 29-bout undefeated streak, and UFC sophomore Jeff ‘Hellbound’ Hougland (10-4) as part of this July’s UFC 148 event.

UFC 148 is expected to take place on July 7, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event is also expected to host the UFC bantamweight title rematch between champ Dominick Cruz and challenger, Urijah Faber.

Barão is 3-0 in the Octagon and is 5-0 under Zuffa after winning twice with the WEC. The Brazilian earned a unanimous decision against Scott Jorgensen last month at UFC 143 to extend his undefeated streak to 29. Barão’s other UFC wins include a submission over Brad Pickett at UFC 138 and a decision against Cole Escovedo at UFC 130.

Hougland won his Octagon debut last summer at UFC 132, defeating Donny Walker via unanimous decision. The win was ‘Hellbound’s’ ninth straight. Hougland was expected to face Mike Easton last October at UFC on Versus 6, but an injury forced Hougland off the card. Hougland has seven submission victories, two by decision and one via TKO.
