UFC’s Ellenberger or Kampmann, Not Nick Diaz, Should Be the Next Title Contender

You may have missed the news yesterday that top welterweight contenders Jake Ellenberger and Martin Kampmann will face off in the main event of the Ultimate Fighter Live Finale on June 1st.

That’s understandable. There was a ton of news going around yesterday, from multiple fight announcements to a veritable Canadian treasure trove being unveiled during the middle of one of the most unintentionally funny UFC press conferences that I can remember.

Ellenberger vs. Kampmann is big news, though. Both of these men were once thought to be potential opponents for Carlos Condit, but Condit’s decision to sit and wait for Georges St-Pierre’s return and a potential title unification bout on November 17 in Montreal threw a wrench into those plans.

And so we have two of the best welterweight fighters in the world matched up against one another, with the ultimate prize being a likely shot at the winner of Condit vs. Ellenberger.

What about Nick Diaz, you say?

What about him? As of this very moment, Diaz is suspended from fighting. I know Diaz and his lawyer think they have a brilliant excuse for him failing a drug test, and perhaps they do. Perhaps Diaz will get his suspension reduced to six months, meaning he’ll be back in June, and it’ll be like he never left in the first place.

But the truth is that it doesn’t really matter. I know this is hard for Diaz fans to understand, so I’ll say it one more time: Nick lost the fight against Condit. That’s a fact. You may think Condit fought like a girl (he didn’t) or that Condit ran (he didn’t), but the one thing you can’t argue (you will) is that Condit beat Diaz according to the unified rules of mixed martial arts.

Ellenberger and Kampmann are clear contenders. They each won their last fight in definitive fashion. Diaz lost his last fight, and he did so by lackluster decision.

And then he failed a drug test because he couldn’t stop smoking pot for the few weeks surrounding his fight.

The math adds up. Diaz may get his title shot at some point down the road, and potheads around the world will celebrate when he does. But he’ll need to win another fight before they throw him into the title mix.

And in the meantime, two deserving fighters—Ellenberger and Kampmann—can get the shot they actually won in the cage, not by being anti-authority and throwing their fingers in the air.

Wednesday night also saw another three matches added to June’s upcoming UFC on FX 4 show as Matt ‘Deep Waters’ Riddle (6-3) faces Luis ‘Beicao’ Ramos (19-7) and Rich ‘The Raging Bull’ Attonio (10-5) takes on Rick ‘The Horror’ Story (13-5). Also confirmed for the event was a previously reported bout between Nick ‘The Jersey Devil’ Catone (9-2) and Chris ‘Kamikaze’ Kamoze.

News of the three bouts was announced by the promotion on Wednesday night at UFC.com.

Plus Matthew Riddle, who grew up one state over in Allentown, Pennsylvania, will take on Luis “Beicao” Ramos. Riddle and Ramos were originally slated to fight at UFC 141 in Las Vegas, but the fight was scratched after Riddle became sick the day of the event.

Two other Garden State natives have also landed spots on the fight card. Rich Attonito, who trains at American Top Team in Florida but was born in Elizabeth, NJ, will face Rick “The Horror” Story at 170 pounds. Plus Nick “The Jersey Devil” Catone will return to action after more than a year in a middleweight tilt with TUF veteran Chris Camozzi.

UFC on FX 4 is expected to take place on June 22, 2012 at Revel Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey.

Riddle earned a split decision last month at UFC 143 by defeating Henry Martinez in Las Vegas erasing a two-fight losing skid. His opponent ‘Beicao’ Ramos debuted with the UFC in Rio last summer at UFC 134, losing to Erick Silva at 40-seconds of the first round to end a three fight win streak.

Story is looking for a win after losing his last two matches, losing decisions to Martin Kampmann at UFC 139 and Charlie Brenneman at UFC on Versus 4. Attonito is 1-2 in his last three, losing by second round TKO to Jake Hecht last December and defeating Daniel Roberts at UFC on Versus 4 in Attonito’s welterweight debut.

Catone hasn’t fought since UFC 128 where he won a decision over Constantinos Philippou in a 195-lbs catchweight bout, earning his second straight win. Camozzi has traded wins for losses in his last four, defeating Dustin Jacoby by submission last January at the UFC on FOX 2 show.

If you thought the UFC was going to change after going on Fox, don’t expect it to come from within the commentary booth.

Color commentator Joe Rogan, who has been with the UFC for 15 years, talked about Fox producers telling him to “take it down a notch” on a recent podcast of his.

I’ve been doing the UFC for how long? F—ing, who knows? 97′. It’s very rare that anyone ever says anything. But, once we started going on FOX, the producer actually had to tell me in my ear, the FOX executive was like, ‘Tell him to take it down a notch.’

You can’t tell me to deliver the way I deliver. I’ve been doing it forever. They either like it or they don’t. Most people like it. If you don’t—tough s—. It doesn’t sound like your f—ing baseball guys, your basketball guys—it’s not supposed to. It’s not. It’s not supposed to. It’s a different f—ing sport, and it’s just the way I do it.

Rogan has always had a strong stance on the role of the producer, believing they sometimes get too involved with the product and change it to the point where it becomes something they believe is right for them and not what is right for the majority of the audience.

Since the UFC has moved onto Fox, many fans have seen it as a new level into making the sport mainstream, but that doesn’t require changing the way the commentating is done, right?

For many fans, Rogan has given insight to techniques utilized in all aspects of MMA, especially when it comes to jiu-jitsu. Even if he does get a little too excited at times, it has never been a bad thing and it’s hard to blame him for doing so. He is just that passionate about the sport.

Rogan responded on Twitter in regards to his statements, saying it only happened during the first event on Fox and that everyone was stressed out. Tweet No. 1  Tweet No. 2.
