UFC 132 Fight Card: Urijah Faber vs. Dominick Cruz and More Predictions

Bleacher Report’s Sal DeRose:

At the end of a busy month of June and the start of July, UFC 132 will take place in Las Vegas and feature the biggest 135-pound showdown in the history of the sport of MMA between, Urijah Faber and current bantamweight champion, Dominick Cruz.

These two fighters have met once before at the featherweight level, and will meet again come July 2nd. With some bad blood between the two, it should make for an interesting fight.

Then you have a battle between the big guys, former UFC light heavyweight champion, Tito Ortiz, and Ryan “Darth” Bader.

Along with that light heavyweight showdown you have a bout between middleweights, Chris Leben, and Wanderlei Silva.

UFC 132 Fight Card and the Pros & Cons of Sharing July 2nd with HBO Boxing

Bleacher Report’s Dale De Souza:

Weeks ago, ESPN.com reported that the long awaited-boxing bout between WBA Heavyweight (200+ lbs.) Champion David Haye and IBF/IBO/WBO/The Ring Magazine’s Heavyweight  Champion Wladimir Klitschko finally landed on a set date and venue.

The Heavyweight bout—arguably the first Heavyweight bout in years that any non-religious follower of Boxing has given a damn about—takes place on July 2 at the Hamburg Imtech Arena in Germany.

Now that’d be an event to get excited for if UFC 132 wasn’t emanating from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on the same night.

Having a Heavyweight fight go up against an already stacked fight card with a Bantamweight title fight falls under the category of “risky F’N business”, especially when said Bantamweight title fight included Dominick Cruz defending against The Fighting Pride of Sacramento, California, Urijah Faber.

Couple it in with Wanderlei Silva vs. Chris Leben, Dong Hyun Kim vs. Carlos Condit, and the returns of Evan Dunham and George Sotiropoulos to action after their first true losses (that is, IF you still think Dunham got screwed against Sean Sherk at UFC 119 last September), and what you have is an event that would have easily justified the decision to have Haye and Klitschko fight the weekend before—possibly somewhere in which the results won’t leak out before the fight airs.

Nonetheless, this fight airs on the same day as UFC 132, and that’s regardless of whether you find out the results of it before it happens or not.

It’s not a big issue—Juan Manuel Marquez fought Floyd Mayweather on the same night as UFC 103, and Manny Pacquiao’s systematic destruction of Antonio Margarito just happened to be on the night of UFC 122.

That, plus some of HBO’s free World Championship Boxing and Boxing After Dark events have fallen on the same day as MMA events as well.

Still, it’s boom or bust when this Heavyweight bout contends with UFC 132, and here is how.

UFC 132: Tito Ortiz Begged for Fight Against Ryan Bader After Asked to Retire by UFC

Bleacher Report’s Patrick Drottar:

In the Ultimate Fighting Championship, if a fighter’s losses begin to pile up, he will most likely be shown the door.

For most fighters, three losses is enough to earn you a pink slip and a spot in the unemployment line.

However, this is not the case for former light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz.

Ortiz, clearly past his prime, has not won any of his previous five fights. His last victory came back in October of 2006 when he defeated Ken Shamrock to end their bitter rivalry.

Four of those five fights came against fighters who would wear UFC gold at one point in their career in Rashad Evans, Chuck Liddell, Lyoto Machida, and Forrest Griffin.

Only Liddell has the privilege of saying he finished the Huntington Beach Bad Boy.

Ortiz’s most recent fight was against collegiate wrestler and student of his Matt Hamill at UFC 121.

This was a fight that Ortiz could have won. However, he underestimated Hamill’s wrestling skills, which lead to an underwhelming performance on Ortiz’s part and another unanimous decision loss.

According to ESPN.com, after the fight, Ortiz was asked to call it quits.

“The UFC called me after that fight and said ‘we want you to retire’. I was shocked,” said Ortiz.

UFC 132 Fight Card: Champ Dominick Cruz Talks Feud with Urijah Faber

Bleacher Report’s Michael Evans:

MMAweekly.com reported on the feud between Urijah Faber and Dominick Cruz.  The two men met in the WEC years ago when Cruz was only 21 years old.  The fight was for Faber’s 145-pound world title, which he retained by defeating Cruz.  This was the only loss in Dominic Cruz’s career, and since then he has won all of his fights at bantamweight (135 pounds).

On July 2 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, Cruz and Faber rematch.  However, at UFC 132, Dominick Cruz is the champion, and Urijah Faber is the challenger.  Both men are very aware of the role reversal and the champion is ready to prove he can beat Faber.

Yes, the time is close, for Dominick Cruz to defend his Bantamweight title against Urijah Faber on July 2 at UFC 132.

In all honesty, this Bantamweight bout isn’t going to get the whole MMA world overexcited initially.

Recently the UFC has come under heavy criticism for their lackluster main events which have failed to impress of late. The Georges St-Pierre vs. Jake Shields fight was overshadowed by some much better battles that night (Mark Hominick and Jose Aldo spring to mind). UFC 132’s main event however should prove to be a more exciting clash between Cruz and Faber.

Let’s take a look at how the fight might unfurl round by round.
