Two weekends ago, UFC legend Don Frye fought for Gladiator Challenge at an event known as “Mega Stars.”

The bout marked Frye’s return to active competition after two years away from the cage, and the 20-8-1 (1 NC) legend wanted to prove he hadn’t lost a step despite having lost to current UFC heavyweight Dave Herman in the first minute of a September 2009 bout under the Shark Fights banner.

Frye’s opponent? Ruben “Warpath” Villarreal.

Yeah, the same Ruben “Warpath” Villarreal that had 19 wins, 22 losses and three draws on his pro record before he fought Frye.

The same Villarreal suffered his first pro loss to Dan Severn and just needed a win to at least keep himself on something of a winning track, but early on in the bout, it seemed like Villarreal would not get that win over Frye.

Seriously speaking, Frye looked at least decent enough to say he was fighting a smart fight while giving Villarreal a rather difficult battle against the cage.

Watching the fight, one can see although Frye was gassing a little bit, he way also landing heavy shots to the body that were doing damage.

Give credit where it’s due for Frye, because he clearly didn’t bank on his legendary mustache, throwing a vicious hook before Frye physically threw an actual punch.

Frye knew what he had to do to wear Villarreal out, and he actively looked to implement it earlier in the fight, but Villarreal did mount a comeback in a bout that lasted a minute-and-a-half longer than Frye’s bout with Herman.

What does the win mean for Villarreal?

Simple: It means Villarreal wins a bout after a five-fight losing streak which includes a loss to Brett Rogers.

There’s nothing to look deeply into when it comes to this win.

Mind you, nobody ever is “done” with MMA, but if Frye was done with active MMA competition after his ninth pro loss, Villarreal would be the guy that we’d either blame or thank for that.

Still, would you buy a now-20-23-3 fighter coming into the UFC with this?

I buy Kenny Florian as UFC bantamweight champion in 2013 before I argue for Villarreal being able to show the UFC heavyweight or light heavyweight division something worth fearing.

Dan Henderson vs. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua…think about this fight for a moment, but take the time to think about this one.

Transport yourself back to December 23th, 2002, picture yourself conducting a pre-fight interview with Henderson as he was heading up to the ring in Fukuoka, Japan, preparing for one Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, and ask that past version of Henderson about if he could imagine facing Rua one day for the UFC.

If you’d asked Hendo about a fight with Shogun on that date, you might be lucky just for Henderson to know that Shogun debuted in the sport one month prior, but what if you’d asked him on October 21, 2006 when he fought Vitor Belfort on the same night that Rua would defeat Mark Coleman?

The truth is that the headliner between Hendo and Shogun, topping off a stacked night of fights in the UFC’s debut in San Jose, is one of those bouts that we all wished for at one time, but never thought would surface in the era where both men were arguably at their best.

Rest assured, though, that that time has finally come, and both men will do battle in what should be a modern MMA classic.

In addition to this main event, it’s a battle of two Middleweights—the newly-signed former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Cung Le, and the legendary former PRIDE Middleweight Champion Wanderlei Silva—in what might be best described as a “do or die” fight for the PRIDE legend.

Also, Urijah Faber feels he got shafted at UFC 132 in the decision that cost him a UFC Bantamweight title, but before he can focus on Cruz, he has to get past the man Cruz beat for the belt in Brian Bowles.

Finally, Martin Kampmann and Rick Story have been on notable tears in the past, but recently, Story suffered his second Octagon defeat by unanimous decision to late-replacement Charlie Brenneman, while Kampmann lost another ridiculously terrible decision—this time to Diego Sanchez, who many felt lost the fight against Kampmann.

All this, plus Stephan Bonnar’s battle of the abs with Kyle Kingsbury, the very first televised fight of Michael McDonald’s UFC career against Alex Soto, and a whole lot more, as this is UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson live (blog coverage) and direct from your home for the pound-for-pound best Mixed Martial Arts news coverage anywhere online, Bleacher Report MMA!

MMA in New York: UFC Files Lawsuit to Legalize MMA on Constitutional Grounds

Zuffa LLC, the parent company of the UFC, has filed a lawsuit against New York State Attorney General Eric Shneiderman and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance with the ultimate purpose of legalizing MMA in New York, according to the Wall Street Journal.

What’s the crux of Zuffa’s argument?

That the banning of MMA in New York tramples over the right to freedom of speech given by the first amendment, although the amendment is interpreted to include more than just speech.

One such case that Zuffa bases its argument on is Brown v. Entertainment Merchants Association, a case in which it was determined that banning the sale of violent video games was an infringement on first amendment rights.

Zuffa has brought on a veritable who’s who of plaintiffs, including Jon Jones, Gina Carano, Frankie Edgar, Brian Stann and Matt Hamill.

The man representing Zuffa and the other plaintiffs—New York University School of Law professor Barry Friedman—is making full use of the fact that the sport is called mixed martial arts in his case against New York State.

“It’s martial artistry,” said Friedman. “The nature of martial arts is a lot like dancing…As is true of ballet, music, or theater, for an audience, attending a live MMA event is an experience that cannot be replicated on a screen.”

So will attacking the law that bans MMA succeed with this new strategy?

Jonathan Snowden, MMA writer and lawyer, is pessimistic.

He tweeted: “UFC’s fifth cause of action is that the law is ‘Unconstitutionally Irrational.’ More than 100 pages in and only two cases cited. Hmm…”

He then tweeted that despite his long time away from law school, he though that Zuffa “doesn’t have much of a case at all.”

The UFC has tried to lift the ban on MMA in New York on multiple occasions and was met with failure each time, despite donating over $70,000 to the campaign of New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Only time will tell if the UFC can be successful this time around.

The legal documentation regarding the case can be read here.

Bellator Fighting Championships prides itself on being an organization where title shots are earned and not handed out. This Saturday’s Bellator 54 card is no different.

Alexander Shlemenko hopes to earn his rematch with Hector Lombard, current Bellator middleweight “Iron Fist,” for lack of a sugar coated label like “champion.” But his road runs through Brian Rogers, who is looking to make his own waves in the 185-pound division.

Vitor Vianna hopes to make his own waves as well, but like Rogers, the Wand Fight Team warrior is staring down a Season Two finalist also, and former WEC middleweight Bryan “The Beast” Baker has no plans on laying down for one of UFC 139 co-headliner Wanderlei Silva’s young proteges.

In addition to the Bellator Season Five Middleweight Semifinals, Bellator bantamweight kingpin Zack Makovsky will rest easy knowing Bellator featherweight champion Joe Warren will be nowhere near his peripheral vision in the title picture.

But his own status as top bantamweight material is on the line as veteran Ryan Roberts looks to break through at the expense of a current Bellator World Champion.

Live on MTV2 and Epix in HD, Bellator 54 comes at you this Saturday. For anyone who needs their void filled until UFC 137 in two weeks, here’s what you all need to know about Saturday’s card.

Ben Fodor, brother of Strikeforce fighter Caros Fodor, has been arrested for masquerading around the streets of Seattle as a superhero known as “Phoenix Jones,” according to BJPenn.com.

The vigilante attempted to break up a street brawl (although the alleged perpetrators claim they were just dancing) in order to bring peace and justice to the streets of Gotham—err, Seattle.

Not only does Fodor dress up in a mask and black muscle body suit with yellow stripes, he also carries around mace to supplement his mixed martial arts abilities; simple fighting techniques alone won’t be able to subdue all criminals, after all.

Does it get any stranger?

Yes. It does. Phoenix Jones apparently has another superhero ally—a “sidekick,” if you will (and no that’s not an attempt at a horrible MMA-related pun)—known only as “Ghost” who accompanied the hero on his quest to root out violence.

The trend of MMA fighters acting heroic is nothing new. After all, UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones apprehended a robber the same day he won his title and UFC heavyweight veteran Antoni Hardonk foiled an armed robbery in Los Angeles. Also, the topic of UFC fighters becoming modern day superheroes in more ways than one has been discussed before.

So does the trend have a future? Can we expect a Kick Ass-esque uprising of ad hoc MMA fighting superheroes?

No, Phoenix Jones was promptly reprimanded for his behavior. The last thing the world needs is MMA fighters with messianic convictions that they’re here to save us.

However, maybe that’s just a cynical outlook. Maybe Phoenix Jones is the hero that Seattle deserves…just not the one they need right now.

Either way, it’s certainly fun to watch him mace people.
