Determined to close out the first-ever trilogy bout in women’s UFC history, ‘Bullet’ came out looking to flex her ground game early, securing an incredible eight takedowns and securing more than 10 minutes of control time against the Guadalajara native. To her credit. Grasso offered up a variety of submission attempts off her back, including a tight guillotine attempt in the fourth round that had Shevchenko gasping for air.

Luckily for ‘Bullet’ fans, Shevchenko managed to pop her head out and maintained control for the remainder of the fight, guaranteeing that she would once again feel the weight of UFC gold wrapped around her 125-pound waist.

Nicco Montano Believes UFC Stripping Her Of Title Was ‘Completely Uncalled For’

Nicco Montano has given her reaction to being stripped of the UFC women’s flyweight title.

Nicco Montano believes the decision made by the UFC to strip her of the women’s flyweight title was uncalled for and sounded off in a statement. The big drama that went down on Friday involved Montano.

Montano vs. Valentina Shevchenko in a women’s flyweight title fight was supposed to be the co-main event of UFC 228 but that fight got nixed after Montano was hospitalized. This led to the UFC and its President Dana White making the call to strip her of the title.

Now, White has gone on record by stating that the promotion is working on finding Shevchenko a new opponent and that they would then fight for the vacant title.

Montano has broken her silence on the UFC making this decision and not allowing her to even make her first title defense as champion. She took to her official Instagram to issue the following statement on this situation:

“I want to say thank you to all my continued supporter, unfortunately my first time ever missing weight means the loss of my title that I’ve worked my *** off for. And if you ask me it’s completely uncalled for, there have been plenty other fighters who have not been punished for a lot more, unfortunately I’m not one to be running my mouth so I don’t bring in the big bucks.

I had stopped sweating early, my kidneys shut down, and I had an imbalance of electrolytes, my sodium levels were way too high. When I got to the hospital the doctor had told me that it was the best idea, that if I had waited even 30min longer it could’ve led to cardias issues. With that said I had no intention to drop out of the fight. I looked good at open workouts. There have been multiple occasions where athletes after the TUF show have been metabolically impaired. It take a little longer to allow yourself the time to bounce back to your proper weight. In my case it was that with the accusation of illness and injury.

I had asked for a fight in October knowing this and had some legit people on my side also asking on my behalf, however the matchmaker and whoever else only gave the September at to choose from. So with no other choice and with the internet backing a lying bully (Valentina), I was forced to accept the date or have the threat to get stopped anyway.

This was the only time I signed a contract the statements this egomaniac (Valentina) has said are completely false and nowhere near the truth. Her idea of the reality is so far fetched so the fact that she trained for me 3 times must mean a couple things, she’s obsessed with me and has too much time on her hands. Not only has she been disrespect and jealous of my efforts and accomplishments also blocking me first on Instagram during her first fight at 125, but the fact that she takes pride in kicking a person while their going through surgery and having their kidneys shut down truly demonstrates what a martial artist should not be!

I did everything I could to make weight in the amount of time offered to me, I had no choice but to. Luckily I have a documentary being made following this entire process and it will soon be available for everyone to witness themselves.

When you’re stuck between a rock and a hard place you stick up your dukes and get down to it and that’s precisely what I do and will continue to do.

The plan for now is to be able to live a healthy lifestyle for the longevity of my career and livelihood. Until I can confidently adapt my body and walk around at a lighter weight I will keep doing all that I can when it comes to making indigenous lives matter and will not be hushed in terms of the wrong doing that has been established, not only with my people but also with me.

Never have I experienced working with an opponent who is so heartless and disrespectful, you can absolutely guarantee I’m coming back to make my stamp and take back my belt.”

Montano won the inaugural flyweight title when she beat Roxanne Modafferi by unanimous decision at The Ultimate Fighter 26 Finale in December. However, she has not been seen in the Octagon since as she suffered a broken foot in that fight, which is the reason she has been kept out of action once she decided to undergo the knife and get surgery.

Newly crowned UFC women’s flyweight champion Nicco Montano may have just won the belt, but she’s already calling shots like she’s ruled over the division for years.

Montano, who holds a modest 4-2 MMA record, won the 125-pound strap at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 26 Finale, defeating Roxanne Modafferi. Shortly after her big win, she was quoted later shutting down women’s bantamweight Valentina Schevchenko’s desire to fight for the flyweight belt.

Montano expounded upon her statement regarding who is worthy of a title shot in a division that was literally just created in the UFC during an appearance on The MMA Hour:

“You want to fight the best so that you can prove to everybody else that you are the best, but right now the best is not Shevchenko at ‘25. She hasn’t fought at that weight. It’s not Paige VanZant, she hasn’t fought at that weight either. So I think it’s pretty silly and I’m a person who wants fair fights and so I just don’t think they are deserving of it right now. I would like it to be Sarge, I think she deserves another chance. She made it through six weeks of hell doing that. I was there watching, I was there partaking in that six-week period, so I know how much heart she has and how much she’s wanting this.

Montano also refused to entertain a title fight with former strawweight Paige VanZant, who along with Shevchenko has never fought at 125 pounds in the UFC before. However, both women are moving to the flyweight division, and both carry impressive UFC and MMA records in addition to a ton of attention in terms of women’s MMA.

Shevchenko lost a somewhat underwhelming decision to current women’s bantamweight queen Amanda Nunes at UFC 215, but there’s no shame in that considering how dominant Nunes has been lately. VanZant carries with her a 7-3 MMA record, and is looking to reinvent herself at 125 pounds

TUF 26 featured a cast full of 125-pound female fighters, with Montano and Sijara Eubanks making it to the finals. Eubanks was hospitalized the day before the event and Modaferri stepped in on extremely short-notice.

With a newly created division wide open for contenders, Montano won’t be able to call the shots for much longer.

Who should be Montano’s first title defense? Does she have a point about fighters coming from other weight classes being unworthy of a flyweight title shot?

With a new women’s weight division open for business in the UFC, several top 115 and 135-pound fighters are looking for a way at capturing the flyweight belt.

Former women’s bantamweight title challenger Valentina Shevchenko may have twice lost to current champ Amanda Nunes, but a title fight at 125 pounds could obviously yield different results. In order to get there, she may need to win at least one more fight.

That goal in sight, she’s looking at Paige VanZant as her dance partner for a title shot eliminator match at flyweight where the winner takes on the new champ.

VanZant (7-3) is stepping up in weight after several brutal cuts down to 115 pounds. She last lost to Michelle Waterson before declaring her intention to move up a weight division, and was set to face former bantamweight contender Jessica Eye at October’s UFC 216 before a back injury delayed her flyweight debut.

Shevchenko (14-3) is looking for a fresh start after losing a second time to Nunes, who’s showed no signs of slowing down in her dominance over the weight class.

The first women’s flyweight champ will be crowned at The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 26 Finale on December 1.

UFC President Dana White has said that Paige VanZant wouldn’t be getting an immediate title shot at flyweight, thus potentially opening up the opportunity for a showdown with Shevchenko. Do you believe this fight should be booked, or would VanZant be in over her head?

Amanda Nunes Offers Heartfelt Apology To Ronda Rousey

UFC women’s bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes dismantled Ronda Rousey in the main event of December 30’s UFC 207 , finishing the fight in only 48 seconds into the first round.

For Rousey, it was obviously devastating – her comeback after a year away from the fight game was over in less than a minute and she was yet again exposed inside the octagon. But for Nunes it was a dream, a chance to prove to everyone that she is the true champion and she capitalized by doing it all without breaking a sweat. In less than six months she defeated two of the greatest women fighters to ever grace the octagon after she won the belt from Miesha Tate at last July’s UFC 200.

However, Nunes wasn’t exactly the most gracious in victory.

Since UFC 207, Nunes poked fun at the champion on numerous occasions. For example, at the UFC 207 post-fight press conference, Nunes offered the belief that Rousey should outright retire to avoid hurting herself:

“She’s a millionaire already, why would she keep doing that? Why would she keep hurting herself?

“Because I’m gonna be the champion forever, so she has to retire. She’s not going to get it anymore.”

Then in a later interview with TMZ Sports, Nunes mocked Rousey saying she didn’t know how she got ‘this far in the division’:

“I don’t know how Ronda Rousey went this far in the division, Honestly, I don’t know how those gals lost to Ronda Rousey.”

“I know since my first fight in the UFC that I can beat Ronda Rousey. But of course, I had to take my time and wait for everything to come together. … That day [at UFC 207] was the day I had to prove to everybody, and I did it.”

Nunes also mocked Rousey by posting a seething meme online just moments after she finished the former champion in brutal fashion.

It’s somewhat understandable why Nunes felt slighted by the UFC’s upper management, whom Joe Rogan stated were supposedly calling her “cannon fodder” heading into Rousey supposed comeback bout – a fight where Nunes received little to no promotional focus beforehand.

But now just over a month since the fight took place Nunes seems to have done a complete U-turn and has issued an apology to Rousey through social media, offering the following on Instagram:

“Let me take a moment to explain myself, I was overwhelmed with adrenaline, emotion and hurt at the time. I held so much in during the weeks prior to my fight with Ronda. I might have said or posted some things at the time that I now realise was not the right thing to do. I want to apologise to Ronda. Her fans and mine and the UFC as well. Ronda is an amazing athlete and has done so much for this sport, especially for the women.”

Nunes is expected to rematch number one contender Valentina Shevchenko sometime this year after ‘Bullet’ cemented her title shot with a jaw-dropping submission win over Julianna Pena at last Saturday’s (Jan. 28, 2017) UFC on FOX 23 in Denver.

Although Nunes has beaten Schevchenko before, Shevchenko looked extremely impressive in her last bout, and the rematch could be a lot more competitive than people think.

As for the ‘Rowdy’ former champion, do you think this apology makes up for Nunes’ criticisms of Rousey?
