Undefeated welterweight striker, Ian Machado Garry is closing as a significant betting favorite to beat perennial contender, Vicente Luque in their upcoming clash at UFC 296 next month in the final flagship event of the year – as the Dubliner looks to maintain his undefeated professional record. 

Machado Garry, the current number ten ranked welterweight contender, has enjoyed a spectacular run inside the promotion’s Octagon since landing in the organization back in 2021 – turning in six consecutive victories. 

Last time out, the former, Cage Warriors welterweight gold holder managed to defeat division staple and most winningest welterweight, Neil Magny back at UFC 292 in August, going the distance over the course of three one-sided rounds in his favor.

Luque, the current number eight rated contender headlined his return to the Octagon back in August against former undisputed lightweight kingpin, Rafael dos Anjos, landing a unanimous decision win over the Niteroi native to snap his two-fight losing run.

And ahead of UFC 296, which features a championship doubleheader as part of a stacked main card, Machado Garry is currently closing as a -245 betting favorite to beat the +200 betting underdog Vicente Luque in December. 

Ahead of the final pay-per-view event of the year, bookies and markets – according a slew of betting sites not on gamstop are still offering odds on action at UFC 296, including Ian Machado Garry’s return against Vicente Luque. 

Boasting an unbeaten 13-0 professional record, Portmarnock native, Machado Garry, who has been the subject of a high-profile build up to his return to the Octagon against Luque, given his switch in camps and personal relationship with his wife, has conquered all ahead of him inside the UFC so far.

Debuting at Madison Square Garden in late 2021 with a buzzer-beating first round KO win Jordan Williams, Machado Garry worked through adversity with a third round knockout over Kenan Song earlier this year, which came before a blistering high-kick knockout of Daniel Rodriguez at UFC Fight Night Charlotte. 

A tricky challenge for the Dublin striking ace comes in the form of Brazilian-American foe, Luque, who has plyed his trade inside the Octagon since 2015. 

Turning in a host of eye-catching wins and numerous unbeaten runs since then, Luque has beaten talent including surging contender, Belal Muhammad, Jalin Turner, Mike Perry, Niko Price, Michael Chiesa, and former undisputed welterweight and lightweight champions, Tyron Woodley, and the above-mentioned, dos Anjos, respectively. 

UFC 296 takes place on December 16. from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada – with an undisputed welterweight title fight between champion, Leon Edwards, and former interim champion, Colby Covington slated to take main event honors.

In the night’s co-main event, flyweight champion, Alexandre Pantoja attempts to land his first defense of the crown, rematching surging contender, Brandon Royval.

And also featured on the main card alongside Machado Garry and Luque, former interim lightweight champion, Tony Ferguson welcomes the returning, Paddy Pimblett back to the Octagon. 

Former two-time welterweight championship challenger, Stephen Thompson also features on the card, in a massive clash against unbeaten finishing ace, Shavkat Rakhmonov.

After kickstarting his UFC career with an impressive six straight wins, including a decisive decision victory over Neil Magny in his last outing, ‘The Future’ plans on clawing his way up the stacked welterweight rankings. Appearing on the Anik & Florian podcast, Garry hopes to one day share the Octagon with perennial contender Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson, but he isn’t stopping there, calling for potential showdowns with ex-titleholders Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman.

“Here’s the thing, anybody who’s ranked above me, anybody whose number when I finish that fight is ranked higher than me is an opponent and it just has to see,” Garry said. “Right, we sit there and we look at it. I’ve called ‘Wonderboy’ out, he said no to me multiple times. Is the UFC Dublin card gonna manifest? Can we put me and ‘Wonderboy’ on a main event in UFC Dublin in front of the Irish crowd and bring it back to Dublin, Ireland? Why not. 

“If Colby goes out there and gets starched by Leon, who is he gonna fight next? Let me go in there and thump the mouth off him. You’ve got Usman who’s just come off of a loss against Khamzat, why not give me him? Go out there and it’s like alright, Khamzat couldn’t finish him, watch what I’ll do to him. Perhaps the Irishman is biting off a little more than he can chew, but 13 wins in a row certainly shows that Ian Garry is ready for the next level of competition. He’ll get exactly that at UFC 296 in December when he returns to take on Brazilian knockout artist Vicente Luque.

I’m going to spend a month with Demian Maia, improving my jiu-jitsu, working on fundamentals, and just fixing and growing and learning jiu-jitsu from arguably the best grappler that UFC has ever seen,” Garry revealed. “So, that’s what I’m going to do and then I’m going to go in there on December 16 and do whatever the f*ck I want to do when I’m in the fight because I can, that’s the truth.”

Despite both sharing the mats in South Florida at Kill Cliff FC, undefeated Dublin striker, Ian Machado Garry, and recent headliner, Vicente Luque are slated to fight each other at UFC 296 on December 16. from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. 

Machado Garry, who landed the number eleven rank in the official welterweight pile back in August at UFC 292, landing a hugely one-sided unanimous decision win over Neil Magny – turning in a heralded striking display against the division’s most winningest fighter.

As for Luque, the New Jersey-born Brazilian earned the number ten rank at 170lbs back in August to boot, landing a unanimous decision win over former undisputed lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos – snapping a two-fight losing skid.

And as per UFC CEO, Dana White, Ian Machado Garry and Vicente Luque will now share the Octagon on December 16. at UFC 296 in Las Vegas, in a welterweight showdown. 

In the midst of a six-fight winning run since landing in the Octagon, former Cage Warriors welterweight champion, Machado Garry turned in her third victory of the year with his judging shutout against Magny back in August.

Prior to that, Machado Garry rallied to stop Kenan Song with third round strikes, before turning in a highlight-reel high-kick and strikes TKO win over veteran kickboxing talent, Daniel Rodriguez at UFC Fight Night Charlotte back in May.

A perennial contender at the welterweight limit, Luque, who boasts a 22-9-1 professional record, largely is considered to pose the biggest threat to Machado Garry’s undefeated run to date – having racked up victories over the likes of Belal Muhammad, Niko Price, Jalin Turner, Bryan Barebrena, Mike Perry, Randy Brown, Michael Chiesa, and former undisputed welterweight champion, Tyron Woodley.

Vicente Luque snapped a two-fight losing skid on Saturday night, besting former lightweight world champion Rafael dos Anjos in the UFC Vegas 78 main event.

Through five rounds of intense back-and-forth action, dos Anjos attempted to put his exquisite grappling game to work, but somewhat of a surprise turn, it was Luque who dominated the bout, particularly in the clinch where his strength was on display throughout the 25-minute affair.

RDA appeared to hold an advantage on the feet when he opted to let his hands go, but dos Anjos only used the striking as a means to close the distance and initiate the clinch. That game plan continuously backfired as ‘The Silent Assassin’ was easily able to control the clinch and reverse position when needed. RDA began to show some urgency in the fifth round, but by then, Luque was in complete control and cruising toward an undeniable decision victory.

Official Result: Vicente Luque def. Rafael dos Anjos via unanimous decision (49-46, 48-47, 48-47).

With the victory, Luque moved to 15-5 inside the Octagon while his opponent, Rafael dos Anjos, fell to 21-13. RDA has now lost two of his last three while Luque has found the win column in five of his last seven scraps inside the Octagon.

Rafael dos Anjos books UFC headliner against Vicente Luque in July

Former UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos is slated for a high-stakes welterweight matchup opposite top-ten-ranked welterweight contender Vicente Luque.

First reported by MMA Fighting, both men are expected to make their first appearances of 2023 as part of a UFC Fight Night headliner on July 15. No other details regarding the event have been released by the promotion at this time. News of the matchup broke just hours after Rafael dos Anjos took to Twitter, confirming he had booked his ninth career main event with the promotion.

Currently ranked No. 9 in the lightweight division, the former titleholder is looking to gain some ground in the welterweight division after scoring a second-round submission against Bryan Barberena in December. Dos Anjos went 2-1 in 2022, securing a win over Renato Moicano while suffering a fifth-round knockout against fan-favorite Rafael Fiziev.

After dropping back-to-back bouts against Belal Muhammad and Geoff Neal last year, Vicente Luque is barely clinging onto his No. 10 ranking in the 170-pound division. Prior to the recent setbacks, the Brazilian knockout artist secured four-straight victories over Niko Price, Randy Brown, Tyron Woodley, and Michael Chiesa.

The UFC’s July 15 event is beginning to come together with four other matchups already announced for the summertime showcase. Those fights are as follows:

  • Walt Harris vs. Josh Parisian (heavyweight)
  • Azat Maksum vs. Tyson Nam (flyweight)
  • Alshee Evans-Smith vs. Ailin Perez (bantamweight)
  • Norma Dumont vs. Chelsea Chandler (featherweight)
