It looks like top-ranked UFC light heavyweight contender Volkan Oezdemir’s recent legal issues won’t get in the way of his contending for Daniel Cormier’s 205-pound title.

Despite his recent arrest for a battery charge that stemmed from a bar fight, Dana White told media at a luncheon that “No Time” will still likely get the championship nod for Cormier’s title (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“He’s probably still gonna fight, yeah,” White said.

Oezdemir was arrested back on November 18th in Fort Lauderdale after his involvement in a bar room brawl back in August. “No Time” reportedly punched and knocked out a man by the name of Kevin Cohen outside a Florida bar by the name of Capone’s. Cohen claims that he was unconscious for 14 minutes and was treated for concussion-like symptoms at a nearby hospital and given stitches for his lacerations.

The UFC light heavyweight was charged with a second-degree felony for aggravated battery with serious bodily injury. Oezdemir’s attorney argued that he was not the aggressor in the altercation and his actions were completely justified.

Oezdemir is currently undefeated in his UFC tenure and has downed the likes of Jimi Manuwa, Ovince Saint Preux, and Misha Cirkunov. It has been rumored that the UFC is targeting a title bout between Daniel Cormier and Oezdemir at UFC 220 on January 20th from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts.

If Oezdemir is unable to compete, Cormier has expressed his willingness to defend his title against any other top contender.

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is changing his tune in regards to his next fight.

Just last week he considered that potentially not fighting Volkan Oezdemir could be a reality, but now, he believes that he will fight the UFC prospect as expected early next year.

It’s well known by now that Oezdemir was arrested and charged with felony battery in Florida as a result of a  bar fight in August where Oezdemir allegedly hit an individual. Oezdemir was released on $10,000 bond.

The promotion is looking to book this bout at January’s UFC 220 in Boston, but Oezdemir’s arrest has put this bout in jeopardy.

Oezdemir’s manager released a statement on the fighter’s behalf after the arrest to make it known that the incident was “nothing more than a bar room altercation in which Mr. Oezdemir, who was not the aggressor, was totally justified in all of his actions pursuant to Florida law.”

Cormier expects Oezdemir to be allowed to compete at UFC 220 in two months.

“I believe the fight still happens, because from my understanding, he was defending himself,” Cormier said on his podcast, Talk and Talker (transcript courtesy of Bloody Elbow). “And if these guys were doing anything, and it can be proven it was self-defense, you do have the right to defend yourself. So if he’s defending himself, the fight will still happen. Hopefully it happens as scheduled.”

“If it doesn’t, that’s a whole other can of worms. (But) I think he may be OK. If it was domestic, you’re f-cked. Anything domestic, it’s over. There’s no questions, there’s no no grey area. You f-cking hit a woman, you’re f-cking done. As it should be. So we’ll see.”

Cormier originally lost the title to Jon Jones at UFC 214 this past July. However, once news broke that Jones failed a USADA test then “DC” was reinstated as champion.

Jon Jones’ Doping Hearing Delayed Until 2018

The consequences of former UFC champion Jon Jones’ latest USADA drug test failure will not be known until at least next year. The consequences of former UFC champion Jon Jones’ latest USADA drug test failure will not be known until at least next year.

After Jones tested positive for banned anabolic steroid Turinabol during his third-round knockout win over archrival Daniel Cormier at July 29’s UFC 214, he was set to have his first hearing in front of the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) on December 12, but CSAC executive officer Andy Foster informed MMA Fighting today that Jones was granted a continuance and will have his first hearing in February.

The current failure could see the talented but oft-troubled “Bones” banned for up to four years, which would obviously put his otherwise illustrious mixed martial arts career in jeopardy. Jones will appear before the CSAC, who changed his win over Cormier in Anaheim to a no contest, and he will also have to answer to USADA for a second time.

Cormier, meanwhile, was given the title back.

He was infamously removed from his scheduled main event rematch with Cormier at July 2016’s UFC 200 after testing positive for clomiphene and Letrozol, which he said he unknowingly ingested in sexual performance enhancement pills, which he jokingly came to refer to as “dick pills.” But the scene is no laughing matter for a fighter whose career, which was at one time most certainly headed for the deserving moniker of the greatest of all-time, is quickly devolving into a saddening downward spiral with no end in sight.

While USADA acknowledged that Jones was not necessarily a drug cheat during his first hearing surrounding UFC 200, they also suspended him one year for what they deemed gross neglicence on he and his team’s part.

His team is currently once again claiming Jones did not knowingly take any anabolic steroids before UFC 214, and are having his supplements tested for any evidence of tainting. With Jone seemingly unable to make it to the Octagon without some sort of drug-related controversy, however, that defense will most likely get tougher and tougher to put over on the CSAC and USADA.

Daniel Cormier Reveals Two Names He Could Fight Instead Of Volkan Oezdemir

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is already planning on potentially not fighting UFC prospect Volkan Oezdemir.

It’s well known by now that Oezdemir was arrested and charged with felony battery in Florida as a result of a  bar fight in August where Oezdemir allegedly hit an individual. Oezdemir was released on $10,000 bond.

This comes at a bad time for Oezdemir due to the fact that he looked like he was going to get the next crack at Cormier for the UFC title. The promotion was targeting the bout for UFC 220 in January.

With Oezdemir’s pending legal issues, that fight is in jeopardy of not happening. Cormier has made it clear that he doesn’t plan on waiting around for this fight to happen.

The UFC champion recently appeared on The Anik & Florian Podcast (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting) and stated that if the UFC prospect cannot take the fight due to his legal troubles then he would gladly fight Alexander Gustafsson or Ovince Saint Preux next.

“Of course, I’d fight any of these guys. It doesn’t matter. This guy’s on the longest win streak in the division so he was getting the title shot but if this trouble is gonna keep him out of the opportunity, I’ll just go to the next guy. So of course I’d fight Gustafsson and someone told me yesterday that Team Ovince Saint Preux was like, ‘We want a title fight because we’ve got a good winning streak too.’ Whoever is winning gets the title shot, that’s just the way it is. I don’t care who it is.”

Cormier originally lost the title to Jon Jones at UFC 214 this past July. However, once news broke that Jones failed a USADA test then “DC” was reinstated as champion.

Since then, he was calling for Oezdemir as the next challenger for his title due to the fact that it would be something different compared to face Gustafsson again.

“It’s tough to be going through this type of thing, especially at this time when you’re on the cusp of your biggest moment of your career. I don’t know what happened. You’ve got to not be doing things that are wrong or put yourself in these situations where stuff can go sideways. You’ve got to try to stay out of those positions.

“Maybe it was self-defense but because he is who is is, it’s much worse because he has the ability to sleep dudes that are trying to hit him. You never know what’s happening but even these run-ins, they’re really unneeded, especially when you’re a young guy as Volkan is and you’re on the cusp of something so big for the first time in your career.”

As of this writing, there’s no clear direction in regards to what will happen next but with Oezdemir potentially facing jail time, there’s a good chance that the promotion will not go with the planned title fight in January.

Thus, this leaves Gustafsson as the front-runner for the next title shot. The promotion might book the fight at UFC 220 in Boston as Cormier went on record by stating that he would like to fight at this event.

“I’ve been waiting for the final go ahead. Obviously, this throws a wrench into those plans, when we see what happens to Oezdemir. It’s kind of all fluid right now because we’ve got to see what happens with this guy. Alexander Gustafsson was never gonna be right now anyway, I think he may be dealing with some things. If it has to be him then I guess the fight will be a little bit later in the year, but I’d love to compete in Boston.”
