Vitor Belfort

Vitor Belfort says he is down to fight long-time middleweight contender Yoel Romero who was recently released from the UFC.

Romero was shockingly cut last week after losing three consecutive fights against elite 185lb fighters Israel Adesanya, Paulo Costa, and Robert Whittaker. UFC boss Dana White pointed to the Cuban’s poor form and age (44) as key reasons behind his release from the promotion.

Belfort has not competed since ending his UFC run with defeat against Lyoto Machida at UFC 224 in 2018. In March 2019 he signed to fight with ONE Championship but as 2020 comes to a close ‘The Phenom’ is still in search of an opponent to debut against.

In an interview with LowKickMMA, Belfort revealed he is more than willing to fight Romero.

“For sure,” Belfort said when asked if he’d fight Romero” Come on man, that guy is a beast and my age so that would be great. That would be a great fight too.”

Belfort understands from a business perspective why Romero was cut by the UFC who he says are now in such a powerful position fighters are willing to fight for free and fans are willing to watch a lesser product.

“I see what Dana says. I see a huge market being created now,” Belfort said. ”It’s very easy to see how UFC market. They want young guys. They wanna pay not a lot of money for these young guys. And they want people because people want to fight for the UFC for free. So, Dana’s (like) why am I paying these guys a lot of money if I have this guy and they want to fight for free?

“Now the UFC (has) created a brand they don’t’ need more athletes. So they don’t value. Even Jon Jones they don’t have value that much. Maybe (Conor) McGregor but they don’t want to put the money behind the fighters because they have a very good business model where I don’t have to pay to have the viewership. I can pay (fighters) less and still have the same viewership.”

Kevin Holland has revealed he was planning to call out Yoel Romero after his fight against Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza at UFC 256.

Unfortunately, that plan is now off the table after it was revealed Romero has been released from his UFC contract last week.

The 43-year-old Cuban favourite last featured at UFC 248 in March, dropping a unanimous decision defeat to current 185-pound titleholder, Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya, in a largely uneventful main event clash. Prior to that Romero dropped back-to-back razor thin decision defeats to Paulo Costa and Robert Whittaker.

A shocked MMA community reacted angrily to the cutting of Romero, but UFC president Dana White pointed to the long-time middleweight contenders current record and age as factors, he said.

“We’re going to go through some serious cuts here at the end of the year… And Yoel has lost 4 of his last 5, he’s 44 years old and our roster is very inflated right now.”

Ahead of his fight with Souza, Holland expressed his shock and sadness to see Romero cut – especially as he planned to call out the Cuban if he gets by ‘Jacare’ on Saturday night.

“Yeah, that really sucks that Yoel Romero’s done,” Holland told Submission Radio. “That was actually the fight that I was going to call out next. But if he’s gone, he’s gone. Props to him. Have fun in your next career. By the time I get out of the UFC, I’ll be old too and I won’t want to fight no more. So, I plan on finishing my career here. So, if he’s done, he’s done. If he’s going somewhere else, best of luck in his career. Props to him. He’s a legend. I just want to simply fight some legends, that’s all there is too it. And plus, that get me closer to a BMF-type title fight, huh? So, I’m just searching for those types of things, fun, fun fights.”

Who do you think Kevin Holland should call out if he beats ‘Jacare’ at UFC 256?

Earlier in the week news broke that Yoel Romero had been cut from the UFC after many years at the top of the organization’s Middleweight division.

During the UFC Vegas 16 press conference, Dana White shared the organization’s reasoning for letting go of Romero stating that his age and recent record were contributing factors.

“We’re going to go through some serious cuts here at the enbd of the year… And Yoel has lost 4 of his last 5, he’s 44 years old and our roster is very inflated right now,” White said.

Romero is coming off a failed bid for the Middleweight title against Israel Adesanya in March of this year. The fight between the two was extremely uneventful and saw Stylebender win a decision following five rounds with little action.

Previous to this Romero was coming off a two very close split decision losses to Robert Whittaker and Paulo Costa.

Romero’s manager confirmed his departure from the company earlier in the week explaining that they were already in negotiations with other organizations for Romero to compete in next.

White explained that we can expect to see more cuts in the near future following Romero’s stating that over the coming weeks they will be cutting around 60 individual fighters. These cuts come following a record-setting season of the Contender Series that saw more fighters gain contracts than ever before.

Last month the UFC cut another of their biggest Middleweight stars, the former longtime reigning champion Anderson Silva. His departure from the company came after a KO loss to Uriah Hall that saw his record winning one of his last seven fights.

No further information has been given on other fighters who could be removed from the UFC’s roster.

Who do you think will be cut in the coming weeks?

In some quite surprising news tonight, multiple-time UFC middleweight title challenger and perennial contender, Yoel ‘The Soldier of God’ Romero has been released from the promotion, following a seven-year stay under the organization’s banner.

Romero, an Olympic silver medalist in freestyle wrestling has according to a report from ESPN MMA reporter, Ariel Helwani, parted ways with the North American-based promotion, despite having three fights remaining on his Octagon deal.

The 43-year-old Pinar del Rio, Cuba favourite last featured at UFC 248 in March, dropping a unanimous decision defeat to current 185-pound titleholder, Israel ‘The Last Stylebender’ Adesanya, in a largely uneventful main event clash

Romero was scheduled to tackle The Ultimate Fighter 17 runner-up, Uriah ‘Prime Time’ Hall at UFC Vegas 7 in August, however, the pairing was ultimately shelved and never rebooked when the former withdrew due to undisclosed reasons

A thirteen fight organizational veteran, Romero had established a 9-4 promotional résumé — embarking on an eye-catching eight-fight unbeaten run at middleweight before his interim title challenge defeat to former undisputed titleholder, Robert ‘The Reaper’ Whittaker.

Apart from his forgettable pairing with the above mentioned Adesanya earlier this year, Romero had only dropped other judging losses to both Paulo ‘The Eraser’ Costa, and Whittaker in a subsequent rematch, both regarded as contentious decisions.

An explosive knockout artist, Romero has managed eleven finishes via that method, laying waste to four former world champions during his UFC run. With his last win coming via a highlight-reel knockout of Luke Rockhold at UFC 221 in February 2018, Romero added the former UFC and Strikeforce gold holder to prior career wins over Chris Weidman, Ronaldo Souza, Lyoto Machida, Tim Kennedy, Brad Tavares, Derek Brunson, and Ronny Markes of note.

The American Top Team mainstay had been continously linked with a move to the light heavyweight limit in recent years — tipping the 185-pound scales on two consecutive occasions, leaving him ineligible to win first interim, and then undisputed titles.
