Michael Johnson Wants Zabit Fight At UFC 232

UFC featherweight and lightweight competitor Michael Johnson is interested in fighting Zabit Magomedsharipov at UFC 232.

Michael Johnson is looking for a big fight at featherweight.

The former longtime lightweight recently dropped down to 145 pounds. He suffered a submission loss to Darren Elkins this past January in his divisional debut. However, he has since won back-to-back fights at 145 pounds. His latest win was against Artem Lobov at UFC Moncton.

Johnson took the fight on short notice, and unfortunately missed weight as a result. As thanks for taking the fight on late notice, Lobov paid Johnson back the fine he was penalized for missing weight. “The Menace” recently joined MMA Junkie Radio to talk about his next possible move.

The possibility of a fight with rising featherweight prospect Zabit Magomedsharipov arose. Johnson said, while he’s not calling Zabit out, he’d be open to fighting the Russian on December 29th at UFC 232:

“If he wants to fight in December I’m all for that,” Johnson said. “He’s a very tough guy, he’s up and coming and it’d be a great fight as well. He’s ranked.

“None of those guys did call him out and I don’t think anybody really has called him out. I’m not necessarily going on air calling him out, but I’m saying that’s a fight I would take of course.”

Zabit has been extremely impressive since coming to the UFC. He hasn’t suffered a loss in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition since 2013. Upon signing with the UFC in 2017, Zabit has won all four of his Octagon appearances.

He has been able to finish all but one of his fights under the promotion’s banner. Each of Zabit’s finishes have come by way of submission. A match-up with a fighter the caliber of Johnson would certainly be a big test for the 27-year-old.

Zabit Magomedsharipov issues challenge to fight rising prospect Yair Rodriguez after the latest fight that the young buck took part in. Also, there is a bit of history between these two fighters. This could be a factor in making this fight a reality.

In the headliner of UFC Denver, Rodriguez was able to score an amazing knockout of Chan Sung Jung at Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado on FOX Sports 1.

The history of these fighters is recent. They were supposed to fight each other early September, at UFC 228. However, it got nixed once Rodriguez was sidelined with an injury. Now, Magomedsharipov is calling for a showdown against his fellow featherweight competitor.

He took to Twitter where he sent a challenge to Rodriguez and message to UFC matchmaker Sean Shelby and President Dana White. He wrote, “Will he ever call my name?? Or should I move on??”.

Fight fans have been keeping a close eye on Magomedsharipov, who is currently 16-1 overall. He’s picked up some impressive wins as of late. Those wins include defeats of Mike Santiago, Sheymon Moraes, Kyle Bochniak and Brandon Davis. His latest fight, which was against Davis, went down at UFC 228. Zabit won the fight via submission in the second round with a modified kneebar.

Thus, with one of the biggest wins of his career, Rodriguez might take this fight. On the flip side, Rodriguez holds a pro-MMA record of 11-2 and 7-1 while under the UFC banner.

Rising Prospect Targets Fight Against Chad Mendes

Chad Mendes may have his next fight if this fighter gets his way.

One rising UFC prospect is looking to get a fight booked against former title contender Chad Mendes. That star is Zabit Magomedsharipov, who has a simple reason for wanting to fight him inside of the Octagon.

If you recall, Magomedsharipov was slated to fight Yair Rodriguez at the UFC 228 pay-per-view event earlier this month but that fight got nixed after Rodriguez was forced to withdraw due to injury.

This led to the UFC replacing him with Brandon Davis to fight Magomedsharipov. In the fight that took place on the main card, he scored a second round kneebar that put him with 12 consecutive wins including four under the UFC banner).

As seen on the main card of UFC Boise (also known as UFC Fight Night 133) at CenturyLink Arena in Boise, Idaho, Mendes scored a TKO win over Myles Jury in a featherweight showdown in the first round.

Mendes looked great in this fight and didn’t take much damage. Thus, it would make some fight fans believe that with him being on the sidelines for such a long period of time, he would want to return to the Octagon for his next fight sooner rather than later.

He also he went on record by stating in a recent interview that he wants a fight with former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, who already has his next fight booked against Chan Sung Jung on November 10, 2018 at UFC Fight Night 139.

“He’s not an easy contender, but you’ve got to fight the best to become the best,” Magomedsharipov told MMAjunkie. “I’m taller. He’s very strong, and he has a very good hitting technique, which might be superior to me. But I want to show my best in the fight.”
