Jose Aldo made quite a statement this past weekend in Brazil.

Aldo defeated rising featherweight star Renato Moicano in the co-main event of UFC on ESPN+ 2 from Fortaleza, Brazil. Aldo finished his fellow countryman in the second round with a devastating barrage of strikes. With only a few fights left on his UFC contract before retiring, Aldo is showing he’s still a force to be reckoned with.

Speaking at the post-fight press conference, Aldo said he apologized to Moicano after their bout for “getting in the way of his dreams” (via MMA Fighting):

“First of all, I thanked him for the fight,” Aldo said. “I think that I had to say sorry because I was getting in the way of his dreams.”

Aldo wants to see Brazil dominate the featherweight division, and hopes Moicano continues to fight towards that despite his recent setback:

“We need the new generation,” Aldo said. “We need new athletes in my division, too. I always dreamed of having a total domination of Brazil in the division and I lost that so I want to give him the strength for that. So now it is in the past and I hope that he keeps going.”

“Scarface” believes that Moicano has the talent and skills to make it at the championship level. His only two losses come against Brian Ortega and Aldo, two of the best the weight class has to offer. If Moicano believes in himself and his team, Aldo believes the future is bright for his fellow Brazilian:

“He’s got his talent and he’s got his skills and he’s got a great future ahead of him,” Aldo said. “He needs to believe in his team and hopefully he can fight for the title one day and become the champion.”

Moraes: Dillashaw Got KTFO, So I’m Bantamweight Champ

Marlon Moraes scored his fourth straight win — third consecutive first-round finish — inside the Octagon last Saturday night (Feb. 2, 2019) by submitting Raphael Assuncao in the very first round in the main event of UFC on ESPN+ 2 in Fortaleza, Brazil (see it).

The win set him up nicely for a shot at the Bantamweight title, which is currently in the hands of TJ Dillashaw. In “Magic’s” eyes, though, he is the true division champion since TJ just got his clock cleaned by current Flyweight champion, Henry Cejudo.

“If you ask me, I feel like I am the 135-pound champion. I am the best 135 pounder in the world. The guy, the champion just went down and he lost in 30 seconds against a 125 pounder. So I feel like I am the champion,” said Moraes during a recent interview on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show.

Still, he would be more than happy to welcome TJ back to the 135-pound weight class just to make it official.

“Whatever they want to do, if they want to bring him up, I am going to be very happy to welcome him and settle this,” he said. “Right now I have no talk about any fight or anything. My only focus is going there and fight for the belt.”

Interestingly enough, Marlon revealed he only has one more fight left on his current UFC deal, and if a title shot doesn’t come with his new contract, he isn’t interested.

“If not the belt, I am going to move forward and see what I’m going to do. I’m in the sport to be champion, the time comes and the time is now. There is nothing to discuss. I am going to fight for the title and that’s it.”

The only threat could be standing in Marlon’s way is Cejudo, as “The Messenger” has expressed interest in moving up to challenge TJ after granting him the chance to fight for his 125-pound belt. Should UFC ultimately decide to do away with the flyweight division in the near future, a rematch between Cejudo and Dillashaw is possible.

Should that arise, it will leave Marlon with a very interesting decision regarding his UFC future.

Henry Cejudo Believes He Might Finish TJ Dillashaw “Quicker” At Bantamweight

Henry Cejudo and TJ Dillashaw likely haven’t seen the last of each other inside the Octagon. Dillashaw was defeated by Cejudo in the main event of UFC on ESPN+ 1 last month. Dillashaw was defeated by Cejudo in the main event of UFC on ESPN+ 1 last month. Cejudo pulled off a stunning first-round TKO victory over the 135-pound champ. Some believe the stoppage was a tad premature, especially Dillashaw, while others believed it was just. With that being said, much talk of a rematch has been dominating the conversation.

It’s likely it takes place at 135 pounds, so Cejudo could attempt to become the UFC’s fourth-ever “Champ Champ.” If that were to happen, Cejudo tells MMA Fighting he might finish Dillashaw even “quicker” at bantamweight (via Bloody Elbow):

“Maybe I’m gonna finish him quicker,” Cejudo said.

It would certainly be interesting to see Cejudo and Dillashaw matched up at 135 pounds. Dillashaw was extremely upset with the way the first fight with Cejudo ended, and complained the stoppage was early. He put in a ton of work to make the cut down to 125 pounds, and felt as if his opportunity at becoming a two-division UFC champion was robbed from him.

Even UFC President Dana White believes the stoppage was early. If the UFC does decide to run it back, it will likely take place at bantamweight. Especially with all the doubts surrounding the flyweight division.

Ben Askren and Kamaru Usman’s issues with one another continue.

Earlier today (Mon. February 4, 2019) Askren joined “Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show.” During the program, Askren was asked about his recent verbal altercation with Kamaru Usman. “Funky” said he’s so far under his skin and so far into his head that it’s not even funny:

Also during the program, Askren said he has a photo of Usman with a curly-haired wig while wearing a “Funky” t-shirt. He promised to post it a few minutes after his interview with Helwani wrapped up. Being a man of his word, Askren followed up with the following on Twitter, trolling Usman:

It’s interesting that Askren and Usman are focusing so much on one another right now. They both have world-class opponents in front of them next. At UFC 235, both welterweights will compete inside the Octagon. Askren makes his promotional debut against former 170-pound king Robbie Lawler. That’s quite a tall task for your UFC debut.

As for Usman, he has a welterweight title opportunity ahead of him. He’ll be facing Tyron Woodley in the co-main event for the UFC welterweight championship. UFC 235 goes down from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on March 2, 2019. At the recent UFC 235 press conference, Askren and Usman exchanged words with one another.

They also got into an altercation backstage before the presser began. You can check that out here.
