Here’s Who Jose Aldo Turned Down Before Fighting Jeremy Stephens

This would have been an interesting match-up.

Jose Aldo turned down a fight before agreeing to fight Jeremy Stephens.

Aldo returned to the Octagon at UFC on FOX 30 late last month (Sat. July 28, 2018) against “Lil Heathen.” The former Brazilian champ defeated Stephens via first-round TKO after landing a hellacious body shot.

It was Aldo’s first win since the summer of 2016. “Scarface” suffered the first loss of his UFC career in December of 2015. He was knocked out and dethroned from the top of the 145-pound mountain by Conor McGregor in 13 seconds.

Aldo bounced back with a unanimous decision win over Frankie Edgar several months later. He was subsequently dethroned yet again after suffering back-to-back TKO losses to Max Holloway. Aldo once again established himself as a top contender with his victory over Stephens.

It was his first non-title fight in UFC history and the first of his mixed martial arts (MMA) career since 2009. It turns out things could’ve played out a lot differently at UFC on FOX 30.

Aldo’s coach, Andre Pederneieras, spoke to Brazilian media to talk about his star pupil’s recent win. He revealed that they decided to turn down a fight from Yair Rodriguez before accepting a fight with Stephens (quotes via Bloody Elbow):

“They offered us Yair Rodriguez and it was a fight that didn’t interest us,” Pederneiras said. “He was coming off a loss, way below in the ranking.

“It’s not that we were afraid of Yair, but why am I fighting a guy [in that situation]? But when they offered someone better ranked, coming off a series of knockouts, close to a title shot, that’s worth it.”

Rodriguez is currently the No. 14-ranked featherweight in the UFC.

He’s slated to face Zabit Magomedsharipov at UFC 228 from the American Airlines Center on September 8th from Dallas, Texas.

Gleison Tibau Leaving UFC After Nearly 12 Years

It’s the end of an era in the UFC.

The post Gleison Tibau Leaving UFC After Nearly 12 Years appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

Longtime UFC veteran Gleison Tibau is leaving the UFC after nearly 12 years.

Tibau has stepped into the Octagon 28 times since making his promotional debut in 2006. It was initially reported by AG Fight that the UFC opted not to resign the longtime lightweight contender. MMA Fighting subsequently confirmed the report.

He has racked up a record of 16-12 in the UFC. Over his time in the promotion he has defeated notable names such as Rafael dos Anjos and Jeremy Stephens. He has also shared the Octagon with the likes of Nick Diaz, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson.

Time To Move On:

Tibau spoke about his current situation to MMA Fighting. He revealed that he has received offers from promotions all around the world. The Brazilian has yet to make a decision on where he’d like to go next:

“There are many offers coming, but nothing is set yet,” Tibau said. “Rizin offered me a fight with Takanori Gomi on two weeks’ notice, but I was in Brazil, I was taking care of my cookie business and wasn’t even training, so I couldn’t take it. ACB also sent me an offer, but then they cancelled some cards, so I turned it down.

“Bellator asked me to wait a little bit, but they are interested. There’s also a promotion from Abu Dhabi, another one in Russia as well. I will sign one-fight deals only so I remain free.”

Tibau is making his UFC exit on a four-fight losing streak. The 35-year-old has recently been defeated by Tony Ferguson, Abel Trujillo, Islam Makhachev and Desmond Green. Three of those four contests were finished in the first round.

Moving Up In Weight:

This isn’t the only big change coming to Tibau’s mixed martial arts (MMA) career. He has also decided to move up to 170 pounds and stop the strenuous cut down to 155 pounds:

“I should have done that a while ago,” Tibau said. “I only train with the best welterweights and do super well in the gym. The weight cut has bothered me a lot, I want to fight as well as I do in training.

“I perform well at 170, and with the weight cut I have no explosion, no strength, no resistance, so I will move up a weight class. I’ve always had a tough time cutting weight, and those two years I stayed away weren’t good.

“I lost rhythm, didn’t perform well; I wanted to do things but my body wouldn’t respond, I had no energy.”

UFC 227 Estimated PPV Buyrate Shows Encouraging Numbers

The estimated numbers are in for this show.

The post UFC 227 Estimated PPV Buyrate Shows Encouraging Numbers appeared first on LowKickMMA.com.

UFC 227 estimated PPV buyrate has been revealed and it’s not all doom and gloom for the promotion as this show beat the expectations set for it.

UFC 227 Estimated PPV Buyrate

Dave Meltzer of MMA Fighting is reporting that the early numbers show that this event pulled in 300,000 buys. This is one of the highest buyrate that the UFC has done for the majority of the year. They started off with UFC 220 that is estimated at doing 340,000 to 380,000 pay-per-view buys in January.

This number would be in the same range as the UFC 223 event. That show went down on April 7th with Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Al Iaquinta main event.

Going into UFC 227, the show was not expected to draw very well as it was really a two bout card with the main and co-main events.

UFC 227 pay-per-view event took place on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The main card aired on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card aired on FX at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

The Fights

This event was headlined by a bantamweight title fight pitting champion TJ Dillashaw against Cody Garbrandt in a rematch. Demetrious Johnson vs. Henry Cejudo in a flyweight title rematch served as the co-main event. Historically, rematches and grudge fights do well on pay-per-view for not only MMA events but boxing as well.

That could be a factor in this buyrate. What’s surprising about it is not only the fact that it was one of the highest bought UFC PPV events of the year. But also, it did well with four fighters that have not drawn well in the past most notably, Johnson and Dillashaw as champions.

Johnson fell to Cejudo by split decision and lost the UFC flyweight title in the process. Johnson had won a UFC record 11 straight title defenses coming in, which was a historic milestone.

Meanwhile, in the co-main event, Dillashaw won by first round KO over Garbrandt. Rounding out the five bout main card was Thiago Santos vs. Kevin Holland middleweight bout, Polyana Viana vs. JJ Aldrich in a women’s strawweight bout, and Cub Swanson vs. Renato Moicano in a featherweight bout.

History

Here is a list of the estimated numbers for the last three UFC pay-per-view events in 2018:

UFC 227: 300,000

UFC 226: 380,000

UFC 225: 250,000

The promotion returns to pay-per-view with its UFC 228 show that goes down September 8, 2018 at American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. This show will be headlined by Tyron Woodley defending the welterweight title against Darren Till.

Machida: Mopey Mousasi Still Butthurt Over 2014 Loss

Former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) light heavyweight champion, Lyoto Machida, holds a 2014 win over ex-Strikeforce 205-pound kingpin, Gegard Mousasi, after both combatants made their long-awaited drop to middleweight.

“The Dreamcatcher” is apparently still butthurt over it.

That’s why Mousasi continues to rail against Machida in the mixed martial arts (MMA) media, according to “The Dragon,” who suggests the Brazilian smear campaign (sample) is nothing more than Mousasi acting like a sore loser.

”Everything Mousasi says only motivates me,” Machida told MMA Fighting. “I have a win over him and I think he’s a little bothered by it. But I think it’s an easier fight to promote now. I’m very motivated and I want this opportunity, especially with him as a champion. I want the Bellator belt. I’m not here to be part of the roster and just fight. I came here to become champion and remain champion for as long as I can.”

Mousasi (44-6-2) ran out his UFC contract last summer and quickly hooked up with Scott Coker and Co. where he now holds a perfect 2-0 record, as well as the middleweight strap, following his May destruction of Rafael Carvalho.

Machida (24-8) recently followed suit and announced his Bellator plans back in June. While “The Dragon” has yet to make his Paramount Network debut, he probably needs just one victory to secure a middleweight title shot.

But it may be against this guy, depending on how things shake out.
