Former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida has finally parted ways with the UFC after over 10 years of hard-working service.

In a surprise move, “The Dragon” announced he had signed with rival promotion Bellator on Friday to the confusion of MMA fans. Machida is coming off of a career-reviving knockout over fellow Brazilian MMA legend Vitor Belfort at UFC 224, and seemed poised to re-sign with the UFC after fighting out his most recent contract.

Machida took to social media after the news broke to provide fight fans with some explanation for the move:

“Hello everyone, I’m here to announce a great change in my career. My contract with UFC has finished, and I’m going to a new house: Bellator, which is a great MMA event that has been growing a lot here in the United States. I’m very grateful for everything that happened with me in the UFC.

“I’m very happy with everything I lived. I believe that everything in our lives is made of periods. All that comes is great and all that goes is also great. We have to be open to new changes, new challenges. This is how I think. My best regards to all of you, and I wish you keep on supporting me, because everytime I fight and everytime I practice, I do my best for all of you.”

I'm here to announce a great change in my career. “The Dragon” captured UFC gold after knocking out former light heavyweight champ Rashad Evans back at UFC 98 and eventually moved down to middleweight where he fell short in his pursuit of the title.

Now at 40 years old, Machida joins a promotion where he holds a knockout victory over their light heavyweight champion and a dominant decision victory over the middleweight champ.

UFC Singapore Video Recap: Edwards beats Cowboy by decision

He didn’t get a statement finish over Donald Cerrone, but Leon Edwards did prove he deserves to fight among the elite at 170 lbs.

In the headlining fight of UFC Singapore, the UK’s Leon Edwards finally proved that he is worthy of being discussed among the upper echelon of fighters in the UFC’s welterweight shark tank. To do this, the 13th ranked fighter outstruck — and largely outclassed — the 11th ranked Donald Cerrone.

Edwards went into the fight saying he needed to finish Cowboy impressively, like his English rival Darren Till did in Poland, but this night (or early morning) he couldn’t find the strikes he needed to put the veteran away.

What was the high point of the fight?

The opening moments of the first round really set the tone for the entire contest. Edwards took the centre of the cage like he owned it and quickly threw a vicious kick towards Cerrone’s liver. It landed and looked like it hurt, but it didn’t crumple Cowboy like we’ve seen in the past. Off that kick Edwards bullied Cerrone to the fence. There they clinched (like they would throughout this contest) and Edwards landed a knee that sliced open a cut along Cerrone’s brow. On the break Edwards landed a lightning fast left elbow strike that stunned Cerrone, which was a sign of what would come.

Edwards repeated this tactic again and again in the fight. Sometimes he caught Cerrone with the elbow as they separated against the cage and other times he did it while they clinched in the centre of the Octagon. Cerrone had no answers for it and just didn’t seem quick or sharp enough to see it coming. The damage that caused, and the confidence it gave Edwards, likely helped a great deal when it came down to the judges’ scorecards.

Where do these two go from here?

Edwards will almost certainly improve in the rankings off of this decision. He’ll probably climb up to 11th, taking Cowboy’s spot. When speaking to former welterweight title challenger Dan Hardy, Edwards was concise in calling out 9th ranked Jorge Masvidal. That fight makes a ton of sense based on the rankings and more than likely it will produce an entertaining spectacle. After Edwards’ last fight he called out Darren Till, and that didn’t go anywhere, but now with a win over a ‘big name’ there’s a better chance that he gets what he asks for.

As far Cerrone, that’s his fourth loss in five fights. He was by no means embarrassed by Edwards, nor did he get especially hurt. However, the lopsided defeat likely means that Cowboy’s days of testing himself against the best of the division are over. Expect to see him faced up against similarly tenured fighters in the future or more up-and-comers who want to build a name off of his downfall. But no matter the match-ups, there’s still a good chance the veteran will deliver fun fights for some time to come.

Watch it now, later, or never?

It wasn’t a barn-burner, but it also wasn’t immediately forgettable. Check it out later; it’s on UFC Fight Pass right now.

Here are some highlights in the meantime:

Report: UFC Targeting Rafael dos Anjos vs. Kamaru Usman

A pivotal welterweight fight appears to be in the works:

A pivotal welterweight fight could be taking place in the coming months.

According to a report from BJPenn.com’s Chris Taylor, the UFC is ‘working on’ a bout between former lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos and surging contender Kamaru Usman:

Dos Anjos last competed earlier this month in Chicago at UFC 225, dropping a unanimous decision defeat to Colby Covington in an interim title fight. Prior to that, the Brazilian had won three consecutive fights over the likes of Tarec Saffiedine, Neil Magny and Robbie Lawler since moving up to 170 pounds in 2017.

He also underwent ear surgery following his loss to Covington.

Usman, on the other hand, has been gradually climbing up the welterweight rankings, winning an incredibly impressive 12-straight fights including eight-straight in the UFC. Most recently, ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ picked up a decision victory over veteran Demian Maia in Chile.

Kevin Lee Wants Title Fight Against GSP At New Weight Class

Kevin Lee believes that a fight against GSP at a new weight class makes sense.

Kevin Lee believes that a fight against GSP at a new weight class makes sense.

It should be noted that the UFC only has eight weight class that range from flyweight up to heavyweight.

Lee is not the only fighter who believes that the promotion needs to add more weight divisions as various fighters under contract with the UFC has voiced this opinion.

Also, longtime UFC color commentator Joe Rogan has campaigned for this as well. The problem is that UFC President Dana White has gone on record by stating that the new divisions would see more fighters cutting big amounts of weight to get an advantage.

As seen in the main event of UFC Atlantic City (April 21, 2018) at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey on FOX Sports 1, Lee picked up a TKO win in the fifth round over Edson Barboza.

Lee missed weight in his first attempt for his scheduled bout at UFC Atlantic City. Lee weighed in at 157 pounds with only three minutes to spare in the two-hour window. This marked the first time that he had missed weight.

During a recent Q&A session for this weekend’s UFC Singapore event, Lee expressed (transcript courtesy of The Straits Times) interest in fighting Georges St-Pierre at 165lbs for the inaugural title.

“I think me and Georges for the 165lb title is the one that makes the most sense. You do Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov, the reigning lightweight champion, in October, you do me and Georges in November, at Madison Square Garden. And maybe you do Tyron Woodley and Colby Covington to figure out the 170lbs  division.”
