Sonnen: Give Strickland a ‘pass’ for Poatan KO

Strickland lost in the first round to Pereira at UFC 276.

Sean Strickland suffered a brutal KO at UFC 276 a few weeks ago. The American middleweight, who had surged up the rankings lately, was stopped in his tracks by Alex Pereira—a man who now seems set to challenge old foe Israel Adesanya for the UFC middleweight title.

Strickland talked a lot of smack leading up to this fight, with both Pereira and Adesanya. However, during the fight with Poatan, he looked leagues below the Brazilian when it came to the striking game.

Many are wondering if Strickland, a far more experienced mixed martial artist, would have had better success trying to take Pereira down. However, by his own admission, Strickland really wanted to ‘stand and bang’ with one of the most feared strikers in the sport right now.

Former UFC title challenger Chael Sonnen believes Strickland’s eagerness to fight Pereira on the feet was a gift to fans. And for that reason, he deserves some credit.

“I can’t give Sean too hard of a time in fairness because the fight was so short,” Sonnen said (ht MMA Fighting). “We don’t know what was to come. We’re only looking at a couple minutes of fight here. Sean’s going forward, Sean hadn’t quite got down to cutting him off yet, the elevation change, some of these things could have still been in the plan and it got cut short.”

“Can we give Sean a pass? I mean, Sean was trying to do what the audience really wanted to see,” continued Sonnen. “The audience really wanted to see this fight but if we knew Sean was just going to go out, tackle him, put him in a realm he had never been in, all the sudden they lose interest a little bit. They wanted Sean to stand and trade. That’s you guys. You were the audience. That’s what you wanted, he went out and gave you what you wanted. Is it really fair that we kick him now?”

It certainly seems true that Strickland, by getting KO’d, gave a lot of fans what they wanted to see. The divisive fighter has taken steps to raise his notoriety over the past two years, usually through posting inflammatory and bigoted statements online.

Strickland has also seen his relevancy rise through ‘leaked’ sparring videos which show him going rough, and sometimes downright irresponsible, with his training partners.

Aside from the outside the cage stuff, Strickland was on an upward trajectory thanks to a six-fight winning streak that stretches back to 2018. During that run he beat Uriah Hall, Jack Hermansson and Brendan Allen.

Sam Neill Bashes ‘Idiot Plonker’ That Criticized Israel Adesanya

Don’t use Jurassic World Dominion star Sam Neill’s name to slander fellow New Zealander Israel Adesanya, or he’ll come for you on social media.

Israel Adesanya has been taking abuse from all sides since his lackluster win over Jared Cannonier at UFC 276. But one person who definitely didn’t throw shade at ‘The Last Stylebender’ is fellow New Zealander and Jurassic World Dominion star Sam Neill.

Wait, what?

Let’s rewind a moment: UFC 276 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas was a star studded affair featuring many celebrity actors and athletes. Amongst those was Jurassic World Domination star Chris Pratt, who was cageside to promote his latest Amazon Prime show, The Terminal List.

Adesanya dominated Cannonier on the scorecards, but there was little excitement in his performance. Following the bout, Pratt went on ESPN’s UFC 276 post-fight show and said “I’m not a fan of coming out with all that talk and then putting on a little bit of pitter patter. I’m like ‘Come on, man! Cash on that!’ You gotta cash that promise of being so bad ass.”

Pratt apologized whole-heartedly after Adesanya called him out over the critique, and this is where ‘Sam Neill’ stepped in with another alleged shot at Izzy.

“Instead of threatening a superstar actor how about you get some tips from him to make your next outing actually entertaining,” a tweet credited to Neill read.

The only issue: Sam Neill didn’t write that, and he’s not happy at whoever did.

“I am completely furious some idiot plonker faked a tweet supposedly from me involving Adesanya,” Neill wrote on his real and verified Twitter account, the only place we go to for Sam Neill news. “I admire Israel enormously – he does us proud every time”

It’s no surprise that Neill is a fan of Adesanya. Both men are from New Zealand so it didn’t take long for the actor to realize internet tomfoolery was afoot and take action.

The win over Cannonier advances Adesanya to 23-1 (12-1 UFC) and marks his fifth middleweight title defense. Those hoping for more action from ‘The Last Stylebender’ are already looking forward to his next fight against Alex Pereira, who happens to hold two wins over Adesanya in kickboxing (one of which was a brutal KO).

Michael Johnson doesn’t agree with the official ruling of his last contest with Jamie Mullarkey at UFC Vegas 58.

This past Saturday, UFC veteran Michael Johnson returned to action against Jamie Mullarkey at UFC Fight Night: Dos Anjos vs. Fiziev at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, Nevada. Johnson was going into the bout off a second-round knockout of Alan Patrick in May. Having remained on the sidelines for over a year prior to that, he showed signs of brilliance in his two latest outings.

Michael Johnson argues that he should’ve won over Jamie Mullarkey at UFC Vegas 58

Taking to his Instagram, “The Menace” expressed his disappointment at not getting the nod from the judges. He believed he had done enough to win and gave props to his opponent for his grit.

“Welp. That’s the way the cookie crumbles I guess. Great fight with @jamie_mullarkey tonight! Hats off to you sir! What’s understood doesn’t need to be said! Felt I got 1&3!! Thank you to all my support squad and those continuing to ride with me! There’s no quit in this guy at all. We keep climbing and fighting and scratching to get back to where I belong!!!”

There was heavy debate online regarding the result of the fight

“The Menace” put in an incredible performance early in the first round to score a knockdown over Mullarkey but in classic Johnson fashion, he would also get dropped in the final seconds of round one. The opening round is where the judges weren’t in agreement and this may have been the deciding factor as two scored it for Mullarkey while only one saw it for Johnson.

Mullarkey managed to come out on top of the judges’ scorecards by a split decision. Yet again, the officials came under fire from the community. The result caused a stir online with fans arguing that Johnson should’ve won the razor-thin fight.

Following his loss at UFC Vegas 58, Johnson has now dropped five in his last six since March 2019. However, the record may not reflect the form that Johnson seems to have found again this year.

Do you agree with Michael Johnson that he should’ve won?

Rafael dos Anjos

Former undisputed UFC lightweight champion, Rafael dos Anjos admits that hes unsure of his continued fighting future following UFC Vegas 58 last night in ‘Sin City’ – with the Brazilian veteran suffering a fifth round knockout loss to Rafael Fiziev in the pair’s headlining clash.

dos Anjos, who entered last night’s headliner against Fiziev in the midst of an impressive two-fight winning spree, suffered a fifth round knockout loss just 18 seconds into the final frame, finding himself on the receiving end of a massive left hand, which dropped him, before Fiziev rendered him unconscious courtesy of a heavy ground strike.

Rafael dos Anjos had enjoyed a two-fight winning run prior to UFC Vegas 58

Prior to the loss, the Niteroi favorite had enjoyed a run of two consecutive decision victories against the now-retired, Paul Felder, as well as a five round judging success against common-opponent, Renato Moicano.

Following the defeat, dos Anjos admitted that his loss, whilst hasty was not necessarily a quick or early stoppage in his opinion.

“I don’t think so,” Rafael dos Anjos told assembled media in regards to an early stoppage. “I’ve got to rewatch the tape, but I don’t think so. He (Rafael Fiziev) won fair and square.”

“I’ve got to rewatch it, and I was kind of still dizzy, but yeah, it was a tough fight,” dos Anjos said. “Rafael was a tough opponent. I trained very hard for that fight, and I was really feeling I had my momentum, but that’s the game.”

Weighing up his next potential step inside the Octagon, dos Anjos insisted he would return to his family and decide what is next for him in the future.

“I fought four months ago,” Rafael dos Anjos said. “I fought (Renato) Moicano, now I fought Fiziev tonight and I’ve got to go back home and enjoy my family a little bit. I was away for 16 months and a long layoff with two knee injuries and a hernia, too.”

“Now, it’s time to go back home and enjoy my family a little bit and see what the future holds,” Rafael dos Anjos said. (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Clinching undisputed lightweight gold back in 2015, dos Anjos defeated Anthony Pettis in a dominant unanimous decision win, before successfully defending his crown in December of that year in a first round knockout win over Donald Cerrone in the pair’s rematch.
