CONCORD, Calif. – For some of the fans gathered at the UFC Gym for Wednesday afternoon’s UFC 117 open workouts, braving the midday traffic, the teeming crowd, and the long wait just to get a glimpse of Anderson Silva was a labor of love.

For others, it was slightly more complicated.

“I want to see Anderson Silva get beat really bad,” said Fahrudin Velic, an ardent MMA fan who showed up early along with two friends to ensure a good view of the afternoon’s activities. “He used to be my favorite fighter. I loved Anderson Silva. Then he turned into an ass. If you buy his pay-per-views, it gets you mad because he’s not even fighting.”

SAN FRANCISCO – As Chael Sonnen demonstrated at the UFC 117 press conference, the key to any good schtick is to maintain the ruse that it is not a schtick at all.

Don’t laugh at your own jokes. Don’t crack a smile. Don’t nod and wink your way through your routine. Just keep plowing forward as if you have no idea that the words coming out of your mouth are utterly absurd.

For the better part of a half-hour in the Fisherman’s Wharf Hilton on Thursday afternoon, this is exactly the game plan Sonnen followed. By the time it was over, Sonnen was the only one who could keep a straight face.

His insult comedy routine got off the ground right away, as he accused Anderson Silva‘s manager, Ed Soares, of mistranslating one of Silva’s remarks.

“You’re not the only one in the room who speaks Portuguese even though you act like you are,” Sonnen boomed. “It’s a step harder picking up that language than it is understanding Pig Latin.”

Clay Guida More Passionate Than Ever Heading into UFC 117

SAN FRANCISCO – If you missed Clay Guida at Thursday afternoon’s UFC 117 press conference, maybe it’s because you didn’t think to check the floor. The longtime UFC lightweight showed up along with the other fighters on the card, but he didn’t have a spot at the table up front.

Instead he grabbed some carpet in the front row, made himself comfortable, and waited for the questions to end so he could receive his Cazadores Tequila Spirit Award from UFC president Dana White. It was a nice moment, but also a somewhat odd one, given the circumstances.

“It is kind of different not to answer one fight-related question until now,” Guida told MMA Fighting after the press conference. “But it’s an honor to be on what I think is the most stacked card of 2010. Everyone knows how it is when I get in the ring. It’s going to be a battle, a war, and it ain’t going to be pretty.”

Dana White says he’ll fire UFC middleweight champ Anderson Silva if he decides he’d rather dance than fight at UFC 117. His opponent, Chael Sonnen, says he’s going to come right at Silva and force him to do something – anything – other than play his own private game for five rounds.

You add those two motivating forces together, throw in a dash of vocal displeasure from fans and media over his last title defense against Demian Maia, and you’d think that what we have here is a recipe for a real fight.

At least, it would be if we were dealing with a normal fighter, but we aren’t. We’re dealing with Anderson Silva. If there’s one thing we’ve learned about him over the last few years, it’s that he’s going to do whatever he feels like once that cage door shuts, and he doesn’t particularly seem to care what anyone else thinks about it.

Roy Nelson More Impressed with dos Santos Than Carwin or Lesnar

If you’re expecting Roy Nelson to be bowled over by how quickly he went from reality show winner to potential No. 1 heavyweight contender, you can stop right now.

Even though a win over highly touted Brazilian striker Junior dos Santos at UFC 117 this weekend would likely net him a title shot, and less than a year after winning season 10 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” Nelson isn’t in awe of how quickly things have progressed.

“It’s a little bit slower than I’d like, actually,” he told MMA Fighting. “Usually I’d like to fight for the belt a little bit sooner, but I’ll take it.”

After dismantling Vladimir Matyushenko in just under two minutes at UFC on Versus 2 last night, Jon Jones woke up early this morning, put on a nice suit, and sat down for a quick chat with ESPN’s SportsCenter.

Nothing spectacular came out of the appearance. He came off as humble, yet confident – the always elusive down-to-earth pro athlete. He cracked a smile while admitting that a UFC ban on elbows would wreak havoc on his game plan, and, when asked who he’d like to fight next, he even resisted what must have been an overwhelming urge to tell James Toney exactly what would happen if the boxer attempted to follow through on his plan to slap Jones in the face.
