Strikeforce revealed their plans for their Heavyweight World Grand Prix Tournament showdowns (bet on them here) and it all looks pretty enticing until Scott Coker tries to oversell it:

“STRIKEFORCE is home to the best heavyweight division in the world; the athlete who runs the gauntlet in a tournament such as this would have to be considered the best heavyweight fighter in the world.”

Ease up on the sales pitch, Coker. You’re no Chael Sonnen and we’re willing to bet any one of Cain VelasquezJunior Dos Santos, or Shane Carwin could possibly best your “best heavyweight fighter in the world” …not to mention a certain oversized missing link we know that could lie on top of all those guys and maybe pound out a victory.

This is not to say we aren’t delighted by the line-up and are very much looking forward to this tournament, so let’s take a closer look at the roster.

FEDOR EMELIANENKO: Our favorite Russian mythical beast is still our number one Please Make it Happen, Dana, We’d Like to See Him in the UFC, F@*$ M-1, Damn It! pick. Despite his [surprising] loss to Fabricio Werdum back in June, Emelianenko still holds a respected 32 win record out of 35 fights. He is also the most sought after fighter by any top Heavyweight in both the Strikeforce and UFC promotions.  With this tournament, Fedor puts his entire reputation as the arguably best heavyweight in the world on the line.  He needs this win against Antonio Silva and to face Werdum once again.

ANTONIO SILVA: Silva is a former Elite XC and Cage Rage Heavyweight Champ and no joke with recent wins against Mike Kyle and Andre Arlovski.

FABRICIO WERDUM: Werdum is on a hot streak with his victories over Fedor Emelianenko and “Big Foot” Silva.  Dana White even said he’d like to see him back in the UFC. Werdum’s fight is against the current Strikeforce Champion, Alistair  Overeem, who he holds one win over from a Pride fight in 2006 so the pressure is on.  He wants to win that belt and advance in the competition to prove to the world that his first round, first minute submission of Emelianenko wasn’t just a one time lucky break.

ALISTAIR OVEREEM: This current Strikeforce, Dream (Interim) and K-1 World Grand Prix Heavyweight Champion just showed us over New Year’s Eve that he can destroy UFC castoffs (ie. Todd Duffee) in seconds.  Not too long ago, chatter was that Overeem is more a kickboxer these days and hadn’t proved himself to be the number one MMA Heavyweight.  Overeem kicked off the New Year right by becoming the Dream Interim Heavyweight Champ and agreed to face the number one Strikeforce contender.

ANDRE ARLOVSKI: Arlovski is in the biggest pitfall of his career with three consecutive losses, starting with that sad KO from Fedor Emelianenko three minutes into the first round when he [foolishly] got caught with a flying knee after dominating “The Last Emporer” and maybe getting a little too cocky at Affliction: Day of Reckoning.  From there, Arlovski went on to lose two more fights in Strikeforce and will face Sergei Kharitonov in the heavyweight tournament with very big hopes for a victory.

SERGEI KHARITONOV: Kharitonov is the last loss on Alistair Overeem’s record from a first round KO in K-1 Hero’s Middleweight Grand Prix Finale in 2007.  But that was four years [and 2 weight classes down] ago.  He recently had a Dynamite! NYE first round KO win and is looking to keep up the momentum by taking out Andre Arlovski.

JOSH BARNETT: Wait a minute…  Is he even allowed to fight? Ah…as long as this fight doesn’t take place in California. The man who took down a promotion (see: Affliction) faster than Norma Rae will hope to continue his 6 fight win streak by taking on Brett Rogers.

BRETT ROGERS: Rogers landed only one punch in his 3 minutes against Alistair Overeem before getting TKO’d and before that bout, he lost his WAMMA Heavyweight title-shot to Fedor Emelianenko. “The Grim” rounds out the Strikeforce Heavyweight Eight-Man Tournament looking to get past Josh Barnett and avenge those championship contender losses.

The Strikeforce Heavyweight World Grand Prix begins this February 12th and will air on Showtime Network.

Holly Madison has donned the red UFC Octagon Girl bikini twice for us and though we appreciate it, we here at MMAFix feel it’s time to see a new honorary celebrity ring girl. So this is our public letter to Dana White:

Dear Dana,

Thank you for Holly. Now here is our humble request for future celebrity ring girls…

MILEY CYRUS

Keeping in nature with Holly Madison’s reality star celebrity status and for the simple reason of how they fill out a bikini, we have chosen the above highly qualified candidates. Now, we concede Miley Cyrus is yet to be a reality show castoff and yes, it may not even be her in the frontal nudity picture, but we figure she’s a (Lohan) stone’s throw away from a stint on Celebrity Rehab and we’re pretty sure she’s not too shy about covering upplus, we ran out of hot reality stars to choose from. It was go with Miley or this Atlanta Housewife here, or this Kate minus 8 here, or this Octomom. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration, Mr. White.

Kindest Regards,
MMAFix

UFC 125 Medical Suspensions were released today and it looks like Lightweight Champion, Frankie Edgar could be suspended until July 1st, making the belt unavailable for probably a 6 to 8 week training camp after that. Number one contender, Gray Maynard has also been medically suspended due to facial lacerations until February 16th with no contact until January 23rd. This all sounds very disappointing for the two lightweights, who would like a rematch as early as possible and even worse for Anthony Pettis, who may not get a chance to fight for maybe a year; however it has also been reported that Edgar could be cleared as early as February 16th. If we learned anything from Edgar’s comeback after the 1st round of his fight against Maynard and his decision to attend the post fight press conference rather than head to the hospital as he was expected to do, we will be seeing Edgar and Maynard back in the Octagon much sooner than any medical professional would probably suggest is a good idea.

Chael Sonnen Could Sell Water to a Drowning Man; is Fighting Akiyama (UPDATE)

Despite an impending sentence on March 28th for pleading guilty to Federal Money Laundering, it looks like Chael Sonnen will be facing Yoshihiro Akiyama on March 18th at UFC 128. The prospective fight may pose more concern than the rumored 20 years and half million dollar fine, Sonnen was expected to face, as it has been reported that Sonnen took a deal of a $10,000 fine and 2 years probation in exchange for his guilty plea.

Chael Sonnen seems to be above the law at this point. Should we all be despising him by now? I might be a little… but I take in solace the knowledge that he has (and I’ll borrow the term from the poker world) small ball(s) and that his real estate license has now been revoked, and that his political career is in the toilet. Let’s hope Sexyama can throw him one final blow and quiet the smooth talker, at least for the rest of the year, as the MMA world may have had its fill of this shameless self-promoting salesman.

*UPDATE: MMAWeekly is reporting that Dana White is putting Chael Sonnen on suspension for the time being and the Akiyama fight is off. Ah…some retribution after all…

Chael Sonnen: From CSAC Suspension to Prison Sentence? (UPDATE)

Um…that initial CSAC 1 year suspension (which was reduced to 6 months) is looking like a dream sentence compared to the possible 20 years Chael Sonnen might be facing now. Um…that initial CSAC 1 year suspension (which was reduced to 6 months) is looking like a dream sentence compared to the possible 20 years Chael Sonnen might be facing now. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon says the UFC Middleweight entered a guilty plea today to a charge of Federal Money Laundering. At sentencing, which will take place on March 28th, Sonnen may face up to 20 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $500, 000. This makes that CSAC fine of $2,500 seem very…well, small.

MMAWeekly.com broke down the money laundering incident as:

“The scheme involved Joel Rosabal and Chadwick Amsden, employees of Crown Point Enterprises, dba Lighthouse Financial Group (Lighthouse), a mortgage brokerage service based principally in Vancouver, Washington, with operations in Oregon and elsewhere,” the press release revealed. “Rosabal and Amsden submitted a materially false loan application on the buyer’s behalf… Sonnen acted as the realtor for the transaction. Sonnen submitted a false letter and Sales Agreement Addendum instructing the title company to pay loan proceeds to a plumbing company for repairs to the home. In fact, Sonnen knew and had negotiated with Rosabal that no repairs would be performed on the home and the funds designated to the plumbing company would instead be paid to the buyer as a cash incentive to purchase the home. This agreement was not disclosed to (the mortgage company). Once the loan was funded, the title company paid over $69,000 to the plumbing company and the plumbing company, in turn and at Sonnen’s direction, paid $65,000 to the buyer of the home.”

It was also reported, the usually outspoken Sonnen, who recently appeared on ESPN’s MMA Live and called out CSAC, Wanderlei Silva, as well as Brock Lesnar, could not be reached for comment. Watch the video of his MMA Live appearance below:

*Update: “According to the Oregonian, as part of his guilty plea, Sonnen agreed to give up his realtor’s license and pay a $10,000 fine. The government is recommending two years probation.” (Update provide by Steve Cofield of Cagewriter.com)
