Does the UFC Need to Create Its Own ‘Minor League’ System?

As the sport of MMA continues to grow at a high rate, so does the UFC. As it used to take years for stars to emerge in the sport, now it seems like each month, there is a new elite fighter to watch.

With the growth in talent over the past few years, the UFC has had to put on more events each year, but with injuries, it seems many of the cards have been slight letdowns in the eyes of fans.

So, what should the UFC do? Only have events when they have a number of big-name fighters available? Only on one condition: create a UFC minor league system.

Instead of featuring the young up-and-comers on Facebook prelims and on the bottom of cards, create a minor league to feature these young guys so when they come over, they are already known by the fans.

When Zuffa purchased Strikeforce, this was the first idea that popped into my head. Strikeforce is full of young, but not quite UFC-ready talent, so Dana White will use Strikeforce to keep these guys active and maybe even send some of the UFC younger talent to get some higher ranked fights under their belt.

That was not the case.

Strikeforce is averaging only one event every three months right now, and even Dana White is starting to wonder what to do with this investment. I’d say use it!

I know Strikeforce, Zuffa and Showtime all are under contract, but when that ends, Zuffa should get Strikeforce events to go down once a month on either FX or Fuel and only feature minor league talent.

This would be a great way to introduce future talent in the major weight divisions, introduce some young and talented featherweights, bantamweights and flyweights, and possibly even start bringing the women’s division into the limelight.

There is no way fans are going to buy a pay-per-view of minor league fighters, but featuring an event on free TV once a month is a great way to bring in new fans as well as turning the regular fan who only watches fights when they’re on free TV into hardcore fans.

I’m not saying the UFC will do this, but to me, it seems like a great idea. I love MMA, but I hate seeing White and Joe Silva have to throw events together overnight basically just because they have four cards in one month. I believe creating a minor league system will be very beneficial to the future of both the UFC and the overall sport of mixed martial arts.

Michael Bisping Sick of Callouts from Alan Belcher

UFC middleweight contender Michael Bisping is just a few weeks removed from knee surgery, but that’s not stopping the former Ultimate Fighter winner from speaking his mind.

Bisping, as an analyst on UFC Tonight, said about his return (h/t MMA Junkie), “The knee is healing nicely and it has been three weeks since the operation and I just started training. I just spoke to Joe Silva not too long ago and I am hoping to fight at UFC 152 in Toronto.”

Michael Bisping has never been one to hold anything back, so when asked about potential opponents for his targeted return at UFC 152, Bisping said (h/t MMA Weekly), “I would like to fight Brian Stann; he is a good fighter. A second one is Alan Belcher.”

Belcher is coming off possibly the biggest win of his career when he finished leg-lock specialist Rousimar Palhares at UFC on Fox this past May. Bisping’s take on fighting Belcher was a little different from his reason for wanting to fight Stann.

“Alan Belcher’s somebody that’s been calling me out for seems like forever now. To be quite frank I’m sick of it. So, Alan Belcher, if your balls are big enough call Joe Silva and let’s do it,” commented Bisping.

Belcher is currently nursing a hand injury that could keep him on the mend for a couple more months, but the timing could match Bisping’s heeling timetable perfectly.

Stann responded to Bisping’s statements on Twitter by saying, “my shoulder will be ready, fans want it, we always deliver, lets do it.”

Whether it’s Stann or Belcher, we’re guaranteed an exciting matchup when Michael Bisping returns to the Octagon.

A few years ago, the name Chael Sonnen only rang a bell for a few MMA fans. Some knew him from the WEC and some just knew him when he started fighting on the main card of UFC events. Either way, nobody knew they’d be looking at a future star.

In possibly the quickest rise to stardom in MMA history, Sonnen’s personality has made him an almost instant household name with the majority of MMA fans.

If his trash talking abilities aren’t enough for you, he’s also a pretty amazing fighter.

It seems many fans only know about his classic fight with Anderson Silva, but Sonnen didn’t just walk into the UFC and receive a title shot. Sonnen actually has fought a total of ten times inside the Octagon and will make his eleventh appearance on July 7th in a rematch with UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva.

Before all the focus is put on the rematch, let us take a troll down memory lane with a ranking of Sonnen’s past UFC fights.
