Silva vs. Sonnen 2: Chael Sonnen’s Camp Smart to Appeal Loss to Anderson Silva

When middleweight champion Anderson Silva TKO’d No. 1 contender Chael Sonnen at the 1:55 mark of the second round of UFC 148, he shocked the world once again and thought he shut his foe up for good.

After analyzing the tape of the fight, Sonnen’s camp will appeal the decision.

While there were some questions about Silva holding Sonnen’s shorts and putting extra lubricant on his skin, the major infraction being talked about was the knee to the face that ultimately led to the TKO finish.

There is no questioning that The Spider did catch the No. 1 contender in the face while he was down with his knee, but the referee deemed it as an incidental shot.

While the Sonnen camp has the right to appeal, the word of the referee is final.

Sonnen’s coach Scott McQuarry today told MMAjunkie.com about what Silva did wrong and what grounds they will be appealing:

Obviously, there were minor infractions of grabbing shorts and greasing himself up, but the knee to the face … I’ve looked at it from numerous angles. I can see where it hit his face. It did slide down to his chest. But that should be considered a no-contest. What I’m looking for is a rematch.

Sonnen’s team knows they won’t get the call reversed, so they are doing the best they can to keep their fighter at the top of the heap. The absolute worst case scenario is that the team loses the appeal.

If there is a chance that appealing this case could get Sonnen a rematch—even if it’s one percent—it’s the responsibility of his coaches and his trainers to make that happen. In this case, there may actually be valid points to the argument.

While I still see this fight as being decided the way it should have, looking at it objectively and looking for the illegal knee, there may be a case. There is no way this fight will ever be ruled a no-contest, but Sonnen’s camp owes him the effort of trying.

Nothing will come of this appeal, and Sonnen will be forced to earn his way back to the top of the middleweight division. At 35 years old, there is no doubt that the road back to glory will be tough.

Good thing Sonnen’s one of the toughest fighters in the world.

Silva vs. Sonnen 2 Results: UFC 148 Is Not End of the Road for Chael Sonnen

Anderson Silva successfully defended his middleweight championship at UFC 148 Saturday night, but the bigger story of the night has to be what’s next for Chael Sonnen.

There is no question that Silva is the most dominating champion in the history of MMA, but that doesn’t mean Sonnen’s road to the belt is over; it just means it starts over.

With cardio for days and a ground game second-to-none in the middleweight division, Sonnen will have to start back at the bottom of the barrel again and work his way through the ranks…again.

While many fans and experts thought that a loss for the 35-year-old Sonnen would result in his retirement, there is too much pride in the fighter’s heart to allow him to walk away from MMA when he is arguably the second-best fighter in the division.

Sonnen told ESPN after the fight about his plan of attack after his loss and what’s next for the fighter:

You get knocked down sometimes in life and you have to put one foot in front of the other. You’ve got to learn to shake things off and you have to keep your eye on the ball. You can’t get down. You can’t get depressed. Every single day you get up, you’ve got to make the most of it. I really believe that if you’re going to be in this company [UFC], and take up a spot, you’ve got to be chasing a championship.

It’s tough but, unfortunately, it’s not my first athletic defeat. In this sport you have a 50 percent chance of failure. So you get out there and put in your mouthpiece and you do the best you can. You’ve got to man-up sometimes.

Now is one of those times Sonnen must man up. His career is far from over.

While it is a tough loss to swallow because of the sheer amount of trash talked, that is just what Chael does. The next man who gets in the Octagon will have to endure the same verbal lashing, but the hope is that the outcome will be different.

Silva is just too dominant right now and throughout his reign to be stopped, but the hope is that he will still be wearing gold in another year or two when Sonnen marches back through the middleweight division and finds his way into another title match.

As much as legions of fans and experts will claim that Sonnen doesn’t deserve a third fight, if Silva is still champion after Chael makes his way back to the top of the division, there is little doubt that the third installment is something may fans would love to see.

Until then, there is a long road ahead for Sonnen to get another shot at glory. He did it twice already, what’s one more time?

UFC 148: Anderson Silva’s Words Add More Intrigue to Chael Sonnen Super Fight

With the hype already through the roof for the rematch between legendary middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen at UFC 148, the usually smooth-talking Silva has lost his cool.

On a recent conference call with the media, Silva launched into an anger-fueled tirade about his opponent and what he planned to do about it. In so many words, Silva has promised an interesting fight.

It is common knowledge now that Sonnen has become quite the trash talker over the last few years, but Silva’s angry words are what happens when a fighter allows months of verbal abuse to get to him.

That has been Sonnen’s plan all along—get the Spider off his game.

The normally calm Silva lost his cool in a way that had many MMA writers absolutely stunned, courtesy Yahoo! Sports via MMA Weekly:

Right now, I’m focused on what’s going to happen in the next few weeks and right now the playtime is over. I’m going to beat Chael’s ass like it’s never been beat before. The joke is over, there’s no more talking, I know he’s on the line listening and the game’s over. I’m going to beat his ass out of the UFC. He’s never going to want to fight again after I’m done with him…What I’m going to do inside the Octagon is something that’s going to change the image of the sport. I’m going to beat his ass like he’s never been beaten before. I’m going to make sure that every one of his teeth are broken, his arms are broke, his legs are broke, he’s not going to be able to walk out of the Octagon by himself. I can guarantee that.

To borrow a catchphrase from professional wrestler Daniel Bryan, Yes! Yes! Yes!

While any real MMA fan was already 100 percent behind this rematch, the talk from Silva has cemented this as one of the biggest fights in the company’s history. Not only is he the longest reigning champion and current holder of the longest winning streak in the UFC, Silva has been one of the most polarizing stars of the sport in the last 10 years.

Adding in the new element of the serious trash talking proves the Spider is ready to make his mark on the sport of MMA all over again.

For as good as we all thought Sonnen’s trash talking was coming into this battle, Silva attacked his opponent all guns blasting, and it’s fantastic.

The best part of all the banter is that it all feels genuine and that Silva and Sonnen really hate each other. Last time I checked, that’s how fighting was supposed to be.

All of the verbal exchanges between these two elite fighters will lead to one of the most anticipated weigh-ins in UFC history, possibly resulting in some pre-fight confrontations.

When Sonnen finally does meet Silva in the middle of that Octagon, this will be a war.

UFC 147 Results: Breaking Down Saturday’s Biggest Losers

With UFC 147 in the books, it’s time to analyze the results and break down who Saturday’s biggest losers were.

As easy as it is to point to the loser of a fight here, many factors make each loss even tougher for each man. Add in that the actual host city of Belo Horizonte, Brazil was deprived of the main event they wanted and that this wasn’t the best UFC show.

All of the following were losers coming out of Saturday, in one form or another.

Mike Russow

With a serious effort at trying to prove that stocky guys can fight, heavyweight Mike Russow was TKO’d by Fabricio Werdum in the first round of their Saturday brawl.

It was clear from the get go that Werdum was waiting out Russow’s big punches and ended up catching him with a vicious uppercut. The ref stopped the fight after Werdum pummeled Russow, but this fight proved the point that many fans believe; fat guys lose MMA fights.

While Roy Nelson is an exception, just imagine the talent and destruction a pairing of Russow and Nelson could cause at 205 pounds. This fight proved it’s time for a change for Russow.

Wanderlei Silva

After losing seven of his last 10 fights—including the unanimous decision loss to Rich Franklin at UFC 147—it’s time for the MMA legend to hang up his gloves for good. He has reached the end of his road.

Franklin is getting to the end of his career as well, but he outclassed Silva for five rounds and really exposed him as the shell of the fighter MMA fans had come to love.

There is no debating how great Silva was during his career, but this last stay with the UFC has been terrible. While fans still remember him for the amazing knockouts of the sport’s toughest men, he needs to walk away and save that legacy.

Belo Horizonte, Brazil

After the announcement that Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen II would be in Brazil at UFC 147, the hype around a prominently Brazilian card that would be this epic international event was through the roof.

Unfortunately, scheduling issues stopped the super main event from coming to fruition, but UFC is never caught with their pants down. The company quickly reevaluated the situation and gave the Brazilian crowd two of their own in Vitor Belfort and Wanderlei Silva.

While Silva was ready to go, Belfort broke his hand in training and the UFC threw in former middleweight champion Rich Franklin. By this point, the fans were not seeing a fight that they had paid for.

There were solid fights throughout the night, but nothing really amazing that sent the fans home talking about it. UFC can not foresee these kinds of issues, but it was clear that the Brazilian fans were the biggest losers on Saturday.

What a shame.

Gray Maynard vs. Clay Guida: Dana White Is Right to Call out Guida and His Team

When Gray Maynard (11-1-1 MMA, 9-1-1 UFC) squared off with Clay Guida (29-13 MMA, 9-7 UFC) at UFC on FX 4 Friday night, fans expected one of the hardest-hitting battles the lightweight division could ever offer.

What the MMA world got was Guida running from Maynard for five rounds.

Maynard and Guida are known for their ability and willingness to stand in the pocket of a fight and exchange shots. Instead of watching the ultimate battle of striking, the masses were forced to watch The Carpenter run around the Octagon like the chicken in Rocky.

Except in this case, the fans were the Kentucky fried idiots.

This sorry excuse for a main event was an absolute travesty, and UFC president Dana White had every right to come out after the fight and express his distaste for Guida’s fight approach.

White told MMAjunkie.com about the fight and how Guida and his team’s game plan ruined the main event:

The fight sucked. I don’t know how to expand on it anymore…I don’t think that was a split decision at all. I think Gray Maynard won that fight easily. Nobody can win or lose a fight when the guy is running around in circles. He was literally running. I had some guys who are fans on Twitter saying, ‘Great footwork.’ This isn’t (expletive) ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ You can’t win a fight by running around in circles – that’s not how fights are won.

While White is being his normal brash self and rubbing people the wrong way, everything he says is completely true. The fight card was thin already, but having the main event feature a fan favorite like Guida running away from the fight was terrible publicity.

If UFC is trying to grow its mass appeal via its affiliation with FOX Sports, they need to ensure they are putting on more entertaining events; just like the wildly successful all-heavyweight card the company did at UFC 146.

It is clear that White trusted Maynard and Guida to deliver on that kind of excitement for this Friday main event, but the fact that main event was as bad as it was only puts more pressure and stress on the UFC president’s head.

The UFC is a company first and foremost, and it’s White’s job to make it great. Not only does he have the right to question Guida’s style, he has the power to punish him for embarrassing him.

Let’s see how long the MMA veteran lasts in the UFC after this incident.

UFC 147 Results: What Loss to Rich Franklin Says About Wanderlei Silva

With a tough decision loss to Rich Franklin on Saturday night at UFC 147 in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, former PRIDE star Wanderlei Silva’s future has been set in stone.

It’s time for the MMA legend to retire from the sport that he helped bring to the mainstream.

After seven losses in his last 10 fights, the once-feared fighter has become nothing more than a shell of the man that wreaked havoc on the middleweight and light heavyweight divisions.

The Brazilian brawler has gone from The Axe Murderer to the middleweight gatekeeper; that’s not how this legend should end his career. It’s time to get out before the end gets any harder to watch.

Silva told ESPN following his unanimous decision loss about his chance to end the fight and how he couldn’t finish Franklin off:

At the end of the second round, I thought I was going to knock him out but I wasn’t able to. I pushed it a bit too much. I wanted to knock him out.

There was a time in Silva’s career when he could have ended any human being on earth’s night early, but the fact that he admitted that he didn’t have the power or speed to do it was a scary proposition.

Without his KO power, Silva is not an upper-echelon fighter.

Dana White and the UFC need to sit down with the star and let him know that his new style of fighting isn’t working and that it may be time to hang up his gloves for good.

Don’t get me wrong, Franklin deserves plenty of credit in this fight for taking what Silva was offering and handling it, but the hometown hero didn’t have the skills anymore to end the fight early.

As hard as it will be to say goodbye, Silva’s run is over. It’s time to walk away.
