After some recent controversy, all signs pointed to UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen being in Yushin Okami’s corner when he had his title shot against Anderson Silva at UFC 134.

However, it looks like Sonnen’s plane ticket to Rio will go to waste.

MMA Junkie spoke with an unnamed source, whom had knowledge regarding the Praetorian, a Brazil-based MMA brand which is one of Okami’s sponsors.

The source, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, said that if Sonnen attended, the Praetorian would discontinue its sponsorship of Okami.

“There’s a line of people that want to kick his ass,” the source said, when explaining the rationalization behind the decision.

While that piece of news is not all that shocking, many will agree that the next piece of information is.

According to MMA Junkie, friends of Sonnen over in Brazil brought the Team Quest standout’s attention to a local media report.

“A police chief threatened to arrest him on sight if he showed. The official cited a law that makes disparaging the national identity a crime,” MMA Junkie reported.

Sonnen retaliated by saying “You don’t have freedom of speech in Brazil; put it like that.”

Brazil based MMA manager Alex Davis refuted the police chief’s claim, stating that:

“Brazilian authorities would not arrest Sonnen for anything he said. They would defend him. But he is talking about people that a whole generation of fighters worship.”

Sonnen has reserved his verbal war of words against Brazilian fighters, for the most part, to team Black House members including Lyoto Machida, the Nogueira brothers, featherweight champ Jose Aldo and of course reigning middleweight champ Anderson Silva.

Despite not being able to support his friend and training partner in person, Sonnen has shown no problem backing away from the situation given the circumstances.

“I only want to be there to help him,” Sonnen said.

“I don’t need to see the show. I can watch the show on TV. I was going exclusively in support of Yushin, and frankly, it’s been headed this way for a long time. It’s been headed the direction of, ‘Hey, this is becoming a distraction.”

Sonnen then acknowledged that August 27 is Okami’s time to shine, not his.

“This fight isn’t about me. I’m not involved. I’m here to lend you support. But I don’t want things thrown at what will unintentionally be him while he’s in the ring or we’re going to the ring. This is serious business. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it’s not my place to disturb it or shift any type of attention to me. This is his moment, his night, his time to be the world champ.”

The only man who has given Anderson Silva a run for his money in years, Sonnen has a chance to earn another title shot with a win over Brian Stann at UFC 136.

However, a recent report indicates that Sonnen could be pulled from UFC 136 in favor of a rematch with Silva on November 12, the UFC’s first event on Fox.

UFC News: UFC Looks to Book Anderson Silva vs Dan Henderson II for Fox Debut

Just as fans were gearing up for Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson to headline the first UFC main event on Fox, it turns out that Dana White and company have other plans.

While a lightweight title eliminator may still be a distinct possibility for the November 12 card, Tatame.com is reporting that the UFC wants a rematch between Dan Henderson and Anderson Silva to headline the card.

In two legendary fighters first met at UFC 82, and although Henderson likely won the first round, Silva submitted him with a rear naked choke late in the second round.

The bout would be a middleweight contest, so perhaps the UFC has little faith in Yushin Okami upsetting Silva at UFC 134.

Henderson has not fought at middleweight in 16 months since dropping the Strikeforce middleweight title to Jake Shields.

The Team Quest founder is fresh off arguably the biggest win of his career, scoring a TKO victory over fellow former pride star Fedor Emelianenko

The bout was contest at heavyweight, but Henderson still weighed in at a modest 207 pounds.

As expected, the UFC has a plan B should Hendo not be willing to make the cut to middleweight: Brazil’s public enemy No. 1, Chael Sonnen.

Sonnen is currently scheduled to fight at UFC 136 against Brian Stann, which takes place on October 8.

Should Henderson not accept the fight, early indications are that Sonnen would be pulled from UFC 136 and Stann would fight Vitor Belfort instead.

However, do not forget that Sonnen is currently not licensed to fight in California, and the event takes place in Anaheim.

Whether or not Sonnen can acquire another fighter’s license from California is anyone’s guess, but it one would have to guess that the two sides are still not seeing eye to eye.

If Sonnen vs. Silva II came to fruition, it would be the immediate rematch from UFC 117 that many fans and analysts expected before Sonnen’s suspension regarding elevated testosterone.

It is easy to argue the fairness of Sonnen getting a title shot after a 15-month layoff and a plethora of legal issues, but it is impossible to deny that the fight would be a massive draw.

For the time being, the only fight confirmed for the UFC’s first event on Fox is Dustin Poirier vs. Pablo Garza.

UFC 134: Will Chael Sonnen Be in Yushin Okami’s Corner for Okami vs Silva II?

Since Chael Sonnen’s California fighter’s license expired on June 29, 2011, it basically gave him the green light to compete in the Octagon again.

The always outspoken 185-pounder has given a plethora of interviews since then, and one point that he has emphasized again and again is that he will be in friend and training partner Yushin Okami’s corner when he takes on Anderson Silva at UFC 134

This is a bit surprising, given Sonnen more or less declaring war against Brazil due to his feuds with Wanderlei Silva, Lyoto Machida, the reigning UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, and to a lesser extent, even Jose Aldo.

Nevertheless, the self proclaimed “American Gangster” told interviewer after interviewer that “they love me in Brazil,” and that nothing would prevent him from watching his friend defeat Anderson Silva up close and personal.

In the past few days, this situation has gotten very interesting.

A Facebook event entitled “Lichamento Do Chael Sonnen,” which in English means “Lynching of Chael Sonnen” was recently made public.

The event description, translated to English by Bloody Elbow, states, “Guys, everyone is aware of what this insect has been spewing about Brazil, the fighters, of the people of this country, of our culture.”

“I think we should give him a ‘warm welcome’ when he comes to attend UFC Rio on the 27th, since Brazilians carries the fame of being sympathetic, hospitable, warm people, how about a big party for our friend Chael Sonnen?”

As of this writing, 5,066 people are attending and 12,169 invitees are awaiting reply.

While there is no reason to believe that Sonnen will actually be lynched if he attends UFC 134, it seems that he has been inaccurate in his assessment that he’s a fan favorite in Brazil.

As to be expected at this point, Sonnen took to Twitter to respond to the event:

“Please, FB nerds, no group has the strength to lynch me. I’m a Republican; we run on neither blood nor oxygen.”

Normally, that would be that, but this story continues to have legs.

Apparently, SPORTV spoke with the coaches at Team Quest on Sunday, August 21, and while no direct quotes were released, a translation of the article says that Sonnen will NOT be at UFC 134.

The most telling quote, once again translated by Bloody Elbow, reads, “However, the coaches of Team Quest denied that Sonnen has or will come to Brazil.

“According to a post by the official UFC Brazil twitter, Sonnen was just ‘trolling’ and will not be in Rio for the fight. Sonnen has a fight scheduled for Oct. 8 at UFC 136 against Brian Stann, and will be focused for training for the occasion.”

Sonnen is still on probation from his money laundering case, so it is possible that he may not be allowed to leave the country.

However, on August 18, Sonnen tweeted, “Going to train in the worst conditions to make this fight even easier. Long story short, Rio on Friday! See you in the streets, turkeys.”

Then, on August 21, Sonnen addressed the report once again via Twitter. This time, he was not as forthcoming, though. “Am I going to Rio……. ‘The greatest trick the Devil ever did, was getting the world to believe he didn’t exist,’” he wrote.

So by quoting Keyser Soze, is Sonnen telling us that he will indeed be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 27?

Looks like only time will tell, but as usual, Sonnen has a significant number of fight fans heavily anticipating his next move

Big Nog Wouldn’t Train with a Gay Student

With a career-defining fight coming up against Brendan Schaub at UFC 134 in Rio, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira uncharacteristically came out with some controversial comments.

Minotauro spoke with UOL Esporte in regards to training with a gay fighter, and Bloody Elbow’s Tom Mendes provided an English translation:

“I have no prejudice against the gays, but I wouldn’t train with someone who’s gay”—already a pretty loaded statement from one of the biggest stars to ever fight in Pride.

Nogueira continued:

“I have no malice, I don’t take our physical contact as (something) sexual. But what is that person has that malice of having physical contact with me, of staying there grappling?”

An interesting point of view, the UFC heavyweight concluded, “I would have no problems having a gay student in my academy, but I would rather not train with him.”

The question of homophobia in MMA recently came up when Dennis Hallman wore a speedo at UFC 133.

UFC president Dana White spoke about how much he hated the choice of fight trunks, among other things, stating that “I’ve never been so embarrassed being in the UFC.”

White also strongly hinted at firing Hallman after the loss, though Hallman is still officially listed on the UFC’s official website.

Also worth recalling is that White actually addressed the idea of a gay fighter in the UFC back at UFC 98 via a video blog.

MMA Fighting provided a transcript:

“I honestly think it would have no impact whatsoever, with not only our fighters, but our fan base,” White said.

“The guys in the UFC, everybody’s so cool, there’s great sportsmanship, everybody’s so respectful. It wouldn’t be a big deal to me, and most the guys I know in this sport, it wouldn’t be a big deal to them either.”

Nogueira is 4-3 in his past seven fights heading into his bout with Schaub, so while a loss may not necessarily spell the end of a storied career, it would likely mark the end of Minotauro’s time as a top 10 heavyweight in the sport.

Shock of the Day: Chael Sonnen Practicing BJJ, Demonstrates the Omoplata

Even the biggest believers in the Mayan calendar may agree that the world is ending a lot sooner than anyone could have predicted.

Why is that? Cage Potato has come across video footage of UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen practicing Jiu-Jitsu.

It’s unbelievable considering that Sonnen has a long-standing feud with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, and has taken this grudge to include any Black House MMA or Brazilian fighter.

While YouTube no longer has the video available, most fans recall that Sonnen called Jiu-Jitsu “gay” long before he ever fought Anderson Silva.

One quote from Sonnen that could be found reads as follows:

“Even if I could get a submission, I’m not laying under a grown man with my legs spread on worldwide TV. There are some guys who subscribe to that theory, but I’m a Republican. We don’t do that.”

Yet, low and behold, here is a video of Sonnen demonstrating an omoplata. It is rarely seen in MMA, but a move that is fairly often attempted in Jiu-Jitsu circles.

To put things into perspective, last December, Sonnen filmed a series of move tutorials when he was on the cover of, believe it or not, Black Belt magazine.

For those readers familiar with BJJ, do you think Sonnen did a good job of explaining the move?

Let everyone know your opinion in the comments section.

There is a reason that the 155-pound division is widely considered the most competitive division in MMA.

That reason is that the depth within the division is seemingly never ending, and the results from UFC Live: Hardy vs. Lytle was just one example of that.

Two key matchups occurred on the card: Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone vs. Charles Oliveira and Jim Miller vs. Ben Henderson.

Both Cerrone and Henderson won in definitive fashion, and now the division has essentially been turned upside down since Miller came in as the unofficial No. 1 contender and Henderson was not even considered a top 10 fighter.

With that in mind, where do Miller and Henderson end up on the revised rankings?

Has Cerrone done enough to crack the top 10?

Take a look inside to find out.
