When Frank Mir went down with an injury, there was a scramble to find an opponent for Daniel Cormier. Fans were excited because after this matchup, Cormier would join the UFC’s heavyweight division where it’s assumed he will make an immediate impact.

Names that were thrown out include Pat Barry and Matt Mitrione, but neither ended up getting the call for the bout. There was a proposal sent to Showtime last week, but it was rejected for an undisclosed reason.

Many saw this cancellation as a sign that Strikeforce would be closing its doors, and that Zuffa would place all of its focus on the continued growth of the UFC. Strikeforce has seen declining gate and viewership numbers, and at some point, it is no longer financially viable to continue running a loss leader.

Well, those rumors are apparently just that—rumors. In an email sent out late Friday morning, it was announced that the next Strikeforce event will be held in January 2013.

“Due to a series of injuries, we were forced to cancel the upcoming card on Nov. 3, but are already working to put together a stacked card in January,” Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said.

Strikeforce’s roster still includes such names as Jacare Souza, Luke Rockhold, Gilbert Melendez and Ronda Rousey. A stacked card promises to feature at least a couple of these stars.

Showtime Sports’ Stephen Espinoza weighed in as well.

“While we’re disappointed with the cancellation, we are looking forward to an even bigger Strikeforce event on Showtime early next year,” said Stephen Espinoza, Executive Vice President & General Manager, Showtime Sports.

As a fan of the Strikeforce product, I’m happy that we’ll at least get one more show. If it is the last one, what better way to go out than with a supercard?

There has been a lot of criticism lately about UFC matchmaking. The biggest transgression was booking Stephan Bonnar to face the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world: Anderson Silva. Fans and media almost immediately hit the net to air their grievances, and in some cases they were pretty harsh.

They view Bonnar as a fighter who made it to a certain level of success, but was never able to get over the hump to super stardom. To some extent, they are correct. In his UFC run, Bonnar never captured light heavyweight gold.

Instead, he has been in a handful of memorable matches, won because he’s the perfect mixture of technical prowess and grit. He’s willing to trade punches in order to take advantage of his opponents’ lack of toughness.

When it comes to pedigree, there’s few in the light heavyweight division that can match “the American Psycho.” Years learning under Carlson Gracie ensured that he would be one of the most capable fighters on the mat and his Golden Gloves experience means that his punches actually pack some power.

What I’m saying is that while everyone is writing off Bonnar, I think he has what it takes to actually upset the UFC middleweight champ. I’d go as far as to say that Stephan Bonnar is a live dog in this fight.

It’s been pretty obvious if you’ve followed the narrative that Bonnar came out of retirement for this fight. He needed a fight to motivate him to get back into a fighting mindset. He got it in Silva and quite frankly, I think too many people are writing him off.

Very few fighters ever attain “champion” status and even fewer will ever put together the type of career of Stephan Bonnar. Sure, he’s come up short against top fighters, but he also pushed them harder than other fighters.

Which brings us back to the question: What if Stephan Bonnar beats Anderson Silva on Saturday?

The UFC has plans for Anderson Silva that include the much sought after bout against Georges St. Pierre and a possible superfight with Jon Jones. They have spent millions building up the legend of Anderson Silva.

So what happens if Silva is outclassed by Stephan Bonnar? What happens to not just the legacy of Anderson Silva but all those potentially lucrative match ups?

I hope that Bonnar isn’t writing himself off in this match up. This could be the type of springboard he needs to get motivated again to fight. He could play spoiler and use Anderson Silva’s name to reestablish his career.

Don’t sleep on the “American Psycho”. He always has a fighting shot. I hope we see it on Saturday night.

Video: Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller’s Bizarre Appearance on the MMA Hour

2012 has been a really bad year for Jason “Mayhem” Miller. In fact, that’s an understatement. 2012 has been probably one of the worst years of Jason “Mayhem” Miller’s life.

His MMA career reached an end when he lost to CB Dolloway by decision in a very underwhelming fight. In the lead up, he promised that should be lose, he would retire from MMA. To the best of my knowledge, he was a man of his word and had decided to walk away from the sport.

His downward spiral continued when he was arrested this past August for breaking into the Mission Hills Church in California where he was found naked on one of the church’s couches. This occurred only a few days after Miller and UFC President Dana White exchanged some heated words on twitter regarding Miller’s retirement.

Since that incident, Miller remained pretty quiet and out of the public eye. It was apparent to everyone that he was working through some real issues and needed time away from what is often a very critical MMA fanbase.

As a co-star of the upcoming Kevin James movie Here Comes the Boom, Miller made a rare appearance on his real-life friend Ariel Helwani‘s show The MMA Hour at the SBNation Video Studios in New York to promote the film.

Helwani expected to speak with Miller about his life and the hard times he’s experienced as of late. Miller had other ideas. Much like Andy Kaufman, Miller refused to break character and continually referenced himself as Lucky Patrick, the character he portrays in the aforementioned film.

For nearly 15 minutes, Miller got more and more agitated as Helwani tried to keep the conversation professional. He began to wreck the studio and was an all-around maniac. When he finally walked out on the show, Helwani was speechless.

It took almost 15 minutes for the show to continue and Helwani was visibly shaken. He explained that Miller was one of the first fighters that really stood up for him when he was getting his start.

He continued that he trusted him so much that he actually asked Miller to send a letter to the government for him when he was applying for a green card because a letter from a fighter would be good support for his story about what his job entails and Miller did it for him (only this past February too).

Fans have often viewed the “Mayhem” character as just another layer of who Jason Miller truly is as a person. We all have different personae and “Mayhem” was viewed as the over-the-top personality of Jason Miller.

After this appearance, I’m not sure there is any part of Jason Miller left. He’s committed so much to this character that it’s my belief he can’t turn it off. While I sometimes enjoy his antics, it’s become more and more clear that someone needs to sit him down and try and bring him back to reality.

If not, I fear that he may be too far gone and he’ll continue his path of self-destruction. As a fan, I hope he can get help. I hope that there are people around him that are willing to do whatever it takes to get him the help he so desperately needs.

Basically, I hope this is as bad as it gets because I fear what will happen next.

UFC on FX 5 was a pretty drama-filled event for the UFC. Between Dennis Hallman’s release and Jeremy Stephens’ incarceration, Zuffa needed the fights to entertain, and that’s exactly what they did.

From the very first fight on Fuel to the main event between Travis Browne and Antonio Silva, fans were treated to some of the best action the UFC has to offer. The night saw a No. 1 contender crowned for the UFC’s flyweight title and some young fighters pick up some key wins.

Some surprising moments happened as well. Jacob Volkmann finished his fight by submission and back-to-back come-from-behind victories occurred in the prelims.

With so many impressive performances, let’s take a look at the grades for the main card.

Jeremy Stephens has always been a bit of a hell-raiser inside and outside of the UFC cage. Well, now he may be known as the first fighter in UFC history to miss a scheduled bout because he was incarcerated.

Earlier this morning, Stephens was arrested by the Minneapolis police. No details as to why Stephens was arrested are being currently made available.

According to MMAJunkie.com, Stephens was arrested at the Marriott City Center Hotel, which was the UFC’s fighter hotel for the week. He was then transported to the Hennepin County Public Safety Facility.

Stephens has yet to be formally charged with a crime and it is currently unknown as to when he will be released from police custody.

There is a possibility that this fight continues without any issue, but it is also extremely possible that his bout with Yves Edwards will be scrapped entirely. If that is the case, expect the welterweight bout between Mike Pierce and Aaron Simpson to be moved from Facebook to Fuel TV.

Stephens is currently on a two fight losing streak and was in desperate need of a win. At 26 years old, he’s still considered one of the top young fighters in the UFC’s lightweight division, but he needs to get his personal life in order before he can take the next step.

Expect more news about Stephens in the coming hours.

Update: Damon Martin of MMAWeekly.com is reporting that Stephens was arrested for an outstanding warrant. Stephens used to reside in Iowa so it is very likely that this warrant was for an incident prior to his move to San Diego.

Update: Stephens is currently being held without bail for a felony charge from another state.
