It would’ve been hard for anyone to follow Uriah Hall’s amazing performance from the previous episode of TUF 17, but Collin Hart and Kevin Casey didn’t even finish (read the full recap here).

Although they had a little heat going into their matchup, Hart and Casey underwhelmed with an extended clinch battle through two rounds, as Hart controlled his winded opponent to give Team Jones its critical first win of the season.

• From the get-go, Casey just didn’t seem that aggressive, as Hart swarmed on him with a flying tackle to set the pace. Sonnen continually told his fighter to create distance and score points, but Hart and Team Jones just had a better plan at work.

• In essence, the entire fight was over as soon as an already tired Casey hit the mat in the second round. Hart effectively controlled him for the remainder of the fight with top control and short punches from Casey’s guard.

• It’ll be interesting to see how Jones sets up the remaining fights of the season, especially now that he only has his best talents left. “Bubba” McDaniel will face off against the young Kelvin Gastelum next, and just about anyone would have to favor McDaniel in that bout.

• As a reminder, McDaniel is also Jones’ training partner and a fellow Greg Jackson MMA student, giving him an edge in gym quality to go with his drastic 21-fight experience advantage. With that in mind, here’s how the teams look after the fact:

Team Jones:

1. Clint Hester (7-3)
2. Josh Samman (9-2)
3. Robert “Bubba” McDaniel (20-6)
4. Gilbert Smith Jr. (5-1)
5. Collin Hart (4-1-1)
6. Adam Cella (4-0)
7. Dylan Andrews (16-4-1)

Team Sonnen:

1. Luke Barnatt (5-0)
2. Uriah Hall (7-2)
3. Zak Cummings (15-3)
4. Tor Troeng (15-4-1)
5. Jimmy Quinlan (3-0)
6. Kevin Casey (5-2)
7. Kelvin Gastelum (5-0)

[Note: Winners are in bold, losers are scratched off the list and the next competitors’ names are in italics.]

• The fight itself wasn’t particularly gruesome, although preview clips led many of us to believe that a bloodied Hart would be on the losing end of the match, pushing Team Sonnen to a 3-0 position. Instead, Team Jones has a chance to sweep the rest of this bracket.

• ‘Just goes to show, preview clips don’t tell you everything.

• Also, the first “prank” of the season from Team Sonnen was just awful. Waking guys up before weigh-in day to through toilet paper at them? Lame. They deserved to lose this week on karma alone.

• Every time Uriah Hall is on-camera, it’s surprising to see how nice and even-headed he acts despite being the favored talent in the house. He hates bullying and poor sportsmanship, and backs up his attitude when interacting with the rest of the cast.

• Considering all the other national news going on today, (the LA manhunt and State of the Union, for example), it’s certain that this episode will pull lower ratings than last week. That pretty much means that Uriah Hall is the unspoken star of the show, which seems weird given the coaching staff.

• In fact, you can pretty much chalk that up to a total lack of heat between Chael Sonnen and Jon Jones, who seem to barely react to being in the same room with each other. Both men—two of the UFC’s biggest personalities and chatterboxes—have been reasonably muted this season so far, although the editing may be to blame more than anything else.

Season 17 of The Ultimate Fighter continues Tuesday night at 9 p.m. PT/ET on FX with the middleweight tournament between Team Jon Jones and Team Chael Sonnen—and things are looking dire for the UFC’s light heavyweight champion.

In Episode 3, Uriah Hall announced himself as the fighter to beat with a sickeningly violent head kick KO victory over Adam Cella, moving Team Sonnen to 2-0 in the first-round bracket.

Thankfully, Cella eventually regained his senses, but was nonetheless sent to the hospital (with Jones in tow) to check for brain damage. That left Sonnen running things solo as he made the next matchup of the season, pitting Kevin Casey against Collin Hart.

(Check out the full list of competitors and team rosters.)

For the first time in the season so far, a Team Sonnen fighter has been paired off with a higher-ranked opponent based on roster picks, but the biggest issue facing Casey is whether or not a cut over his eye will affect his bout. Can he push Team Sonnen to a perfect 3-0 and retain control of the fight picks?

UPDATE: Check out the full episode recap right over here, with impressions and thoughts on the match.

Muhammad Ali. Wayne Gretzky. Bo Jackson. Pele. Jackie Robinson. Michael Jordan. All of those names represent some of the greatest athletes in sports history.

But does UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva belong in the group?

ESPN clearly thinks so, as “The Spider” has been included amongst some high-profile competition in its latest “Greatest Athletes of All Time” poll.

As part of a joint promotion with SportsCenter, ESPN Sport Science will be pairing off 16 sportsmen across major sports and minor sports to determine which man is the best in history from a purely physical, athletic standpoint.

Here’s how the brackets are currently set, along with the athletes that will be paired off and when they’ll be analyzed for head-to-head comparisons:

• Michael Jordan (NBA) vs. Tiger Woods (Golf)—Feb. 17
• Michael Phelps (Swimming) vs. Anderson Silva (UFC)—Feb. 18
• Muhammad Ali (Boxing) vs. Mark Allen (Triathlete)—Feb. 19
• Bo Jackson (MLB/NFL) vs. Roger Federer (Tennis)—Feb. 20

• Willie Mays (MLB) vs. Jackie Robinson (MLB)—Feb. 21
• Pele (Soccer) vs. Tony Hawk (Skateboarding)—Feb. 22
• Carl Lewis (Track & Field) vs. Wayne Gretzky (NHL)—Feb. 23
• Jim Brown (NFL) vs. Dale Earnhardt Sr. (NASCAR)—Feb. 24

Although fans can vote on the website, the ESPN Sports Science team will be applying its own “unique metrics” based on “speed, strength, durability, reaction time and much more.”

If that’s the case, this countdown could set itself apart by focusing less on career achievements and more about raw physical gifts. For a mixed martial arts competitor to be included in the list is unusual, but remains a testament to Silva’s amazing 17-fight undefeated run in the UFC.

Cris Cyborg Asks for Release from UFC, Abandons Ronda Rousey Superfight

After several arguments about weight divisions and tuneup matches, Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos is taking her ball and asking to go home.

That’s the latest development in negotiations for a once-potential UFC superfight between Ronda Rousey and Cris Cyborg, according to a recent episode of Inside MMA on AXS TV.

As relayed via Cyborg’s manager, former UFC champion Tito Ortiz, the first (and only) Strikeforce women’s featherweight champion is no longer interested in working for the UFC.

To that effect, she has reportedly asked for her early release from the promotion:

Right now, we’re actually waiting for [the] UFC to release [Cyborg]. We asked for them to release her, so Dana White actually talked to me yesterday. They gave an offer, I went to Cyborg and she said she didn’t want to do it—and we just asked for her release.

Since [the UFC] isn’t doing a 145-pound weight class, what else can they do? Now, she’s going to be released. Maybe we’ll go look somewhere else and you can see Cyborg crush another woman’s face in.

Inside MMA host Bas Rutten immediately inquired whether or not Invicta FC would be a possible destination for Cyborg, as the all-female MMA promotion currently hosts a healthy featherweight division.

Ortiz noted that the UFC’s intent was to offer Cyborg a “huge deal,” but she specifically wanted a three-fight deal with a fourth fight against Rousey at a 140-pound catchweight.

However, UFC president Dana White had previously stated that match would only happen at 135 pounds—requiring a weight drop that Ortiz says would permanently harm Cyborg’s health.

As Ortiz elaborated on Inside MMA, “family is what it’s truly about” for Cyborg, as she believes the health risks will impair her ability to have children.

Of course, future offers for Cyborg may be dry, as the Brazilian is suspected of several years of drug use, especially following a positive test for anabolic steroids in January 2012, which has halted her MMA career ever since.

Additionally, Ortiz also drew some fire from White for statements made to The MMA Hour (via MMA Fighting) claiming that Rousey “hasn’t proven anything” in her fighting career yet.

White’s response was especially barbed, telling the press (via MMA Weekly) that Rousey—an undefeated champion, sports superstar and history-making U.S. Olympic medalist—is in another class compared to Ortiz, blowing his career “out of the water” with her relative age and accomplishments.

While it remains to be seen if the UFC will release Cyborg, women’s bantamweight champion Rousey currently has her hands full preparing for her first title defense at UFC 157 against challenger Liz Carmouche.

That main-event title bout will take place on Feb. 23 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, along with a co-main event title eliminator featuring Dan Henderson vs. Lyoto Machida. During the wait, a three-part UFC 157 Primetime special will be airing for the next three weeks, profiling both of the female bantamweight headliners.
