After failing to get licensed in Virginia, Shine Fights moved Friday night’s mixed martial arts card to the First Council Casino in Newkirk, Oklahoma. That casino is on land owned by the Otoe-Missouria Tribe, and therefore the Oklahoma State Athletic Commission has no authority over the event.
But while Joe Miller, director of the Oklahoma State Athletic Commission, can’t stop the event, he can speak his mind about it.

With his second straight unanimous decision loss to Frankie Edgar, B.J. Penn is no longer one of the top 10 pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
He’s long been considered one of the truly elite fighters in mixed martial arts, but the soon-to-be 32-year-old Penn has looked in his two fights this year like he has slowed down. Penn is the greatest lightweight ever to fight in MMA, but even the greatest decline eventually.
So Penn isn’t in my pound-for-pound Top 10 anymore. To find out who is, read on.

In a classic fight for the Bellator bantamweight title, Joe Warren was beaten senseless for five minutes in the first round against Joe Soto, only to storm back and knock Soto out just 33 seconds into the second round.
It was one of the fights of the year, and a fight that showed that Warren, a world-class wrestler, also has an incredible chin and powerful striking.
“I had a bad first round,” Warren said afterward. “I took a deep breath, got my focus back and pushed hard. You can’t stop me. I’m the baddest man on the planet.”

Ed West, Zach Makovsky and Ulysses Gomez all won decisions Thursday night at Bellator 27 to advance to the semifinals of the Bellator Fighting Championships bantamweight tournament.
In the first fight of the televised card, West beat Bryan Goldsby by unanimous decision in a bout that will be remembered mostly for the fact that the fans at home couldn’t watch it: For most of the fight the Fox Sports Net broadcast lost its video feed, and viewers saw only a graphic saying “Bellator 27 technical difficulties.” The Fox Sports Net audio was still working, but the announcers didn’t seem to realize that the viewers at home couldn’t see the action, and therefore weren’t as descriptive as they should have been.

After a two-decade career as a professional boxer, James Toney looked like a fish out of water in his mixed martial arts debut on Saturday night, and UFC President Dana White said after Randy Couture overwhelmed Toney that the UFC was done experimenting with professional boxers.
But Trevor Sherman, the man who trained Toney for MMA, said he doesn’t want Toney to quit the sport, even if he has to fight in a second-tier MMA promotion.
“I still love James,” Sherman said. “I hope he doesn’t stop doing MMA, and if the UFC does release him … trust me — there’s plenty of interest.”

After Edgar beat B.J. Penn by unanimous decision in April, a lot of people believed that the fight was a fluke, that the judges erred, and that Penn was still the best lightweight in mixed martial arts. But now that Edgar has defeated Penn once again at UFC 118, there’s no room for debate: Edgar is the undisputed champion.
Except that Edgar has one loss on his record, and that one loss is to Gray Maynard, who has been anointed the next challenger to Edgar’s title. Maynard could make a case that he deserves to be considered the top fighter in the division, but unless he makes that case again in the cage, I’m sticking with Edgar at No. 1. The rest of the rankings are below.
