UFC Fans: Don’t Give Up Hope Yet, Silva vs. GSP Could Still Happen

This weekend’s Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos fight on FOX is perhaps the biggest fight in the history of the company (and sport), but there is one fight that everyone is still waiting for that could overshadow even a heavyweight title fight.

I’m talking, of course, about the potential super-fight between UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

UFC President Dana White has spoken publicly about his desire to deliver this huge fight to the fans, but even with White and matchmaker UFC Joe Silva running the show, they have not yet been able to make it happen.

A few reasons have contributed to this, the most obvious being that one of the two fighters would have to either bulk up or drop down in weight. The UFC has put on catch-weight fights before, but they typically only happen when fighters are amidst a permanent weight class change.

Interestingly enough, Anderson Silva used to fight in the 170-pound welterweight division; of course, that was a decade ago and he has put on considerable body mass since then, so dropping down to 170 pounds seems nearly impossible at this point.

The most likely scenario is that St-Pierre adds on some weight and moves up to 185 after completely dominating the competition at 170. As if that alone wasn’t a big enough roadblock, perhaps an even bigger one was that Anderson Silva appeared to be heading toward the end of his career even just a few months ago.

Silva is plenty set financially, and his legacy cemented as one of, if not the, greatest fighter of all time—so there really was nothing left to prove.

But when recent news broke that Silva plans on fighting for another six or seven years, this potential dream match was suddenly infused with new life.

With Silva allegedly planning on fighting for quite a few more years, that gives GSP plenty of time to add on the weight to compete in a larger weight class. At the moment, he is an average-sized welterweight, so a move up is going to require a complete change in diet and workout regiment. As he has stated in the past, this would definitely take some time.

But again, now that it looks like Silva is going to stick around for awhile, St-Pierre may now see a reason to move up in weight to set up the potential super-fight.

The biggest reason this fight may eventually happen is that, as we have seen with the high level boxing fights in the past, a super-fight like Silva-GSP would almost certainly shatter every previous PPV record in the promotion’s history. Of course, this would lead to a gigantic payday for both fighters, win or lose—the likes of which has never been seen in the sport.

This is a dangerous fight for both competitors, but as they always say, money talks. If Pacquiao-Mayweather can eventually happen, certainly the UFC can do something to put together GSP-Silva.

I’m not saying it’s going to happen…just don’t give up hope…yet

Attention UFC fans and admirers of beautiful women: Grab onto your seats because some great news has just been announced that will make you very, very happy.

According to UFC President Dana White, former ring girl Brittney Palmer will be making her return to the organization. The exact date has not been set, but it appears to be a done deal.

Earlier tonight, White made use of his nearly 1.7 million Twitter followers in an effort to gauge fans’ response regarding the possibility of the beautiful former ring girl returning to the UFC.

As expected, the responses from fans on Twitter were a resounding “Yes.” Moments later, White Tweeted what so many people had been hoping to hear about ever since Palmer left the company to pursue her other ambitions earlier in 2011.

Despite Palmer leaving the organization, White told Heavy.com’s Megan Olivi that the UFC and Palmer were not at odds and that they actually still had a great relationship.

“[Palmer] is living in L.A. now, she wants to be an artist. She’s going to art school and she has a great relationship with us,” he explained. “She’s still doing stuff with us but it gets so crazy because this is one of those sports where the fans are into everything and I have no problem talking about anything.”

Still, as the months rolled by, it began to look like there was a possibility that we would never see her smile at a UFC function again. Bleacher Report Featured Columnists Tim McTiernan and Matt Juul, along with many others, were heartbroken.

There has been no official announcement made regarding when she will return to the cage, but with the UFC on FOX: Velasquez vs. dos Santos fight card this weekend and UFC 139: Shogun vs. Henderson the following weekend, fans may be seeing her again much sooner than they had originally anticipated.

Predictions for UFC on FOX: Velasquez vs. dos Santos are flooding in from all corners of the world.

This monumental fight has been split nearly 50-50 in regards to which competitor fans and experts are picking to win, but, as always, all predictions are biased due to simple human nature.

One prediction has erased the human element, though, and gone simply to a head-to-head breakdown of what could happen this Saturday night at the Honda Center in Anaheim, CA.

The developers of the upcoming video game UFC Undisputed 3 have given us the best of two worlds. They have predicted Saturday night’s main event between Velasquez and dos Santos while also giving us some excellent, high-definition in-game video from the new game.

The presentation looks amazing as it breaks down the physical skills of both challenger Junior dos Santos and champion Cain Velasquez, just like we see on real-life breakdowns from the UFC.

Improved standup game physics bring a higher level of realism, while making timing and counters significantly more important than they were in the past. In addition, the ground game looks to be upgraded, as takedowns, transitions and the swaying system are on display in this gameplay video.

UFC on FOX: Brock Lesnar to Serve as Analyst for Velasquez vs. Dos Santos

Former champion Brock Lesnar will return to television this Saturday night, but it won’t be as a competitor.

Instead, the mammoth heavyweight will serve as an expert fight analyst for the inaugural UFC on FOX: Velasquez vs. dos Santos bout for the UFC heavyweight championship.

UFC president Dana White made the announcement during a media call Wednesday afternoon, noting that the sport’s biggest star may be more familiar with these two competitors than anyone else in the sport.

“Brock Lesnar is actually going to be one of the analysts on the show, breaking down the fight,” White revealed. “He [defended the title] against Cain Velasquez, and he was supposed to fight Junior dos Santos, so his opinion is interesting.”

Lesnar was set to fight dos Santos earlier this year following the two heavyweights’ stints as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 13. Unfortunately, a second bout with the debilitating disease diverticulitis flared up, and he was forced to drop out of the fight.

He has now spent more than a year outside of the cage, but is scheduled to return Dec. 30 when he will fight former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem in the main event of that important fight card.

White also announced that Overeem will join Lesnar in attendance for this Saturday’s heavyweight title fight.

“We’re going to be talking about Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar. Overeem will be there,” he said.

These four fighters are arguably the top four current heavyweights in the world, and it has been speculated that we may see the winner of Velasquez vs. dos Santos fight the winner of Lesnar vs. Overeem at some point in 2012.

GSP to 155?: 5 Reasons Georges St-Pierre Could Clean out Lightweight Division

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre has been long-linked to an eventual super-fight with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva. The two legends have completely dominated their divisions for the past handful of years and it has now gotten to the point that each division is practically out of realistic challengers for the dominant champions.

However while many fans look forward to St-Pierre making the move up from 170 to 185, there was recently information provided from his camp that he might decide to move down in weight to 155 instead.

Certainly this would be a bit anti-climatic, but given his physical stature, a move down to 155 might actually be better on St-Pierre than a move up to 185 where he’d need to add a ton of muscle-mass to even be near his opponents in size.

He has cleaned out the cabinets in the welterweight division and now he may be setting his sights on doing it in a second weight-class. The lightweight division is arguably the most competitive in the company, but St-Pierre is just way too dominant to believe that he wouldn’t completely run through 155 as well.

These five reasons, among others, support the idea that GSP could join Randy Couture and BJ Penn as the third multi-division UFC champion.

UFC: Why Mark Munoz Is More Dangerous to Anderson Silva Than Chael Sonnen

UFC 138 may not have had the biggest names on it, but there was one potential star who appeared in the main event and dominated one of the consensus top middleweights in the world.

I’m talking, of course, about Mark Munoz, who stopped Chris Leben between the second and third rounds.

He looked great in the fight as he pummeled Leben, but it was what he did after the fight itself that might end up making the biggest news.

Rather than do what many believe he should do and challenge one more top contender before he looks to the peak of the mountain, Munoz took a helicopter right to the top by challenging UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

Certainly the consensus is that former No. 1 contender Chael Sonnen should receive the next shot at the title based on his performance against Silva in their previous fight, but Munoz really created some discussion on the subject.

Not only that, but he might even be a more dangerous opponent for Anderson Silva.

Sonnen is a beast, but he and Munoz have different skill sets. So let’s take a look at some reasons why Munoz could realistically defeat Silva whenever he finally gets his shot at the title.
