While the chatter about a Conor McGregor comeback has dominated the MMA news cycle over recent weeks, one story that’s been flying under the radar is that a similar comeback might be in the works for Brock Lesnar.
The odds of a return for the former UFC heavyweight champion and current WWE Universal Champion have become lower and lower over recent weeks, and the most recent sign of this came Wednesday morning with TMZ talking to on-screen manager Paul Heyman about the idea.
“I think Brock Lesnar does whatever Brock Lesnar wants to do,” he said. “If Brock Lesnar wants to fight in the UFC, Brock Lesnar will fight in the UFC. If Brock Lesnar wants to fight in WWE, he will fight in WWE…Brock Lesnar does what Brock Lesnar wants to do.”
After the interview was posted on TMZ.com, Heyman took to Twitter to clarify his position on a potential Lesnar return:
While Heyman historically mixes his real-life interviews with his on-screen work with Lesnar (and this piece with TMZ was clearly in character), there have been many signs of the Beast Incarnate returning to the UFC.
Rumors of Lesnar‘s contract running its course following WrestleMania 34 in April have been floating around for months now, with Wrestling Observer‘s Dave Meltzer also reporting that the fallout could be dragged out until SummerSlam in August (via CageSideSeats.com). Couple that with the total 180 performed by UFC President Dana White on a Lesnar return in recent months, and a comeback is feeling more and more likely by the day.
Of course, fans shouldn’t be clearing their schedules quite yet. Even if Lesnar wants to return to the UFC, WWE is likely to make him a strong offer in the spring, and there are still outstanding issues regarding Lesnar‘s failed drug test from his last UFC fight in 2016. Still, this is a story to watch in 2018, and one worth getting at least a little excited about.
