Holland, a former streaking middleweight contender, made his welterweight debut under the promotion’s banner tonight against Oliveira, however, it didn’t prove entirely plain sailing for the Riverside native.
Attempting to counter the patient and composed Oliveira, who was landing a slew of leg kicks, Holland gave up the opening round to the consensus, and almost found himself on the receiving end of a rear-naked choke with just seconds remaining in the frame.
However, just over 20 seconds into the second round, Holland cracked Oliveira with a right hand in the pocket, and from the short shot, chased down Oliveira, and began laying down a series of ground strikes — eventually switching to elbow strikes, forcing the stoppage.
Below, catch the highlights from Kevin Holland’s successful welterweight debut at UFC 272
Before UFC 272 kicks off, Kevin Holland proposes sending Alex Oliveira into an early retirement. Holland and Oliveira will compete on the main card for UFC 272 on March 5. The event counts as the “Trailblazer’s” debut into the welterweight division. And his confidence going into the fight has not simmered. Although appreciative of the…
Although appreciative of the Brazilian fighter’s energy, Holland is not opposed to making this Oliveria’s last fight.
Coming into his next bout with 3 back-to-back losses–2 via submission—plus, the emotion he expressed walking into the Niko Price fight, Holland believes the 33-year-old is due to retire.
“(He’s) pretty awesome. The dude has really, really good energy, so it’s going to be fun to go out there and scrap with him. But I think he’s a little older and a few steps behind, so I’m looking to go out there and exploit that. It looked like he was ready to retire in his last fight with all the crying, so if he wants a warm welcome out… I think my coach was the first person to beat him in like a jiu-jitsu match or something like that. If you look it up, Travis Lutter was like his first L on the record book thing. So I could be his last. From master to student; sounds good to me,” Holland told MMAFightingonSBN.
It will be another battle of redemption in the UFC. With the exception of Holland’s “clash of heads” no-contest against Kyle Daukaus back in October, both fighters enter the cage coming off losses and looking ahead into a brighter 2022.
In addition, their stats are nearly equal. Both fighters have 12 knockouts and 5 submission wins under their belts.
Both fighters carry big smiles and their energy is synonymous with confidence and entertainment. Indeed, the matchup is sure to cause a roar from the audience at the UFC APEX. And if things go as Holland envisions, it will be the final time Oliveira hears this response from a live crowd.

‘Trailblazer’ had an exhilarating 2020 earning himself the ‘Fighter of The Year’ award following on from his impressive 5-fight winning streak which saw four of those victories come inside the distance. 2021 didn’t provide Holland with the same good fortune, he was completely outwrestled by both Derek Brunson and Marvin Vettori on his way to decision losses in both before finishing off the year with an unfortunate ‘No Contest’ against Kyle Daukaus.
Having taken some time away to improve areas of his game, Holland will return to take on the extremely experienced Alex Oliveira in his new weight division which he announced in a truly unique video on his OnlyFans, shared by Ariel Helwani.
Kevin Holland Looking to Return After Setbacks
During his time away Holland focused heavily on improving his grappling and overall ability to wrestle, even going onto compete in Fury Pro Grappling 3. Although he would fall short in this it shows the dedication, he has been putting in to improve prior to his return.
‘Big Mouth’ will also be looking forward to the potential height and reach advantages he has in his new division. In his fights against Brunson and Vettori, both middleweight title contenders used their size and similar gameplans to wear on Holland and keep it mainly on the mat which proved to effective and nullified Holland’s offense.
Time will tell on how much Holland has improved in his ability, but we know for sure, given his nature hell have a few words for his opponent no matter the outcome.

Most recently featuring at UFC Vegas 38 back in October, Holland fought to an eventual official ‘No Contest’ against Kyle Daukaus, after he suffered an accidental clash of heads in the center of the Octagon before Daukaus latched onto a standing rear-naked choke. The result left Holland without a win since December 2020.
Kevin Holland attempts to snap a three-fight winless run against Alex Oliveira at UFC 272
Also featuring on the undercard of that October UFC Vegas 38 event, Oliveira suffered his third straight defeat – this time finding himself on the receiving end of a unanimous decision defeat against Niko Price. Kevin Holland announced his pairing against Oliveira and welterweight return on his official Only Fans page.
Before his ‘No Contest’ against Daukaus, Holland had headlined for the first and then subsequently, second time in his UFC tenure. Seeing his five-fight winning run halted back in March, Holland dropped a unanimous decision defeat against division mainstay, Derek Brunson.
Replacing an injured, Darren Till in April at UFC on ABC 2, Holland suffered a unanimous decision loss against Marvin Vettori in a main event slot. Suffering numerous takedowns in both losses, Holland recently began training under the tutelage of renowned amateur wrestler and former welterweight champion, Johny Hendricks.
Turning in a record-setting 2020, Holland lodged five straight wins over Anthony Hernandez, Joaquin Buckley, Darren Stewart, Charlie Ontiveros, and then at UFC 256 – stopped Jacare Souza with a stunning first round knockout from his back during a grappling scramble.
Before judging loss to Price, Rio de Janeiro veteran, Oliveira dropped submission blemishes against both Randy Brown and Kazakh native, Shavkat Rakhmonov.
In his Octagon tenure, Oliveira has most notable dispatched the likes of former interim welterweight titleholder, Carlos Condit, Max Griffin, Tim Means, Will Brooks, and K.J. Noons.

A clash of UFC stars will be added to the upcoming UFC 272 fight card when Kevin Holland takes on Alex Oliveira. News of the bout was first leaked by Holland himself on his OnlyFans page. He stated that he has signed a contract to take on Oliveira at the event that takes place on March 5 in Las Vegas.
Holland followed up an amazing five-win 2020 with a less-than-stellar 2021. In his last three fights, he has lost two and had his most recent bout end in a no contest. That last outing was against Kyle Daukaus was the no contest that came from an accidental head clash. That bout was supposed to be run back, but Holland was forced out with an injury.
Looking to turn his losing streak around and pick up where he left off in 2020, Holland will look to take down Oliveira, who is a veteran of the sport. Oliveira is a fan favorite and well known by his nickname “Cowboy.” He is also riding a losing streak and has only won two fights in the last three years.
Holland will be moving down to welterweight for this bout after a tough go of it lately at 185 pounds. He is currently ranked 14 in the middleweight rankings, and Oliveira is unranked at this time. Both of these men are known for putting on exciting fights and both can end the fight at any point. This is a very fun matchup added to an already stacked card.
Here is the updated UFC 272 lineup. UFC Featherweight Champion Alex Volkanovski may also be replacing a short-notice replacement for Max Holloway, with The Korean Zombie currently the frontrunner to step in.

Price recently announced on social media that he expected the birth of his sixth child in the coming months. His Brazilian opponent who is the father of 11 kids was quick to give out some parenting tips during an interview with MMA Fighting ahead of UFC Vegas 38.
“I’d tell him, ’If you can get a vasectomy already, do it, brother,’” Oliveira said. “I was sexist. ‘Will it continue the same way after surgery?’ And I got 11. If I had done surgery before, I would have gotten only four or five [kids].
With so many extra mouths to feed Oliveira is always gunning for a post-fight bonus. It seems his chances of snagging an extra $50,000 will greatly increase with the always-exciting Price standing across the Octagon from him.
“He’s very versatile, a tough guy that can take a beating,” Oliveira said of Price. “He’s the type of guy that you have to stay alert at all times and in shape, and put pressure at all times. My camp was very medieval. You can expect anything from him so I had to train everything for him. I’m ready for a war.”
Both men enter this fight in a run of poor form. Oliveira is very aware of the consequences of suffering a third-straight UFC defeat.
“I’m on this journey for a long time,” Oliveira said. “I know we can’t disappoint. I’m going there to give them what they want and have my hands raised. That’s what I need at the moment. I always put pressure over myself, but highs and lows do exist.
“I’ve studied him completely, I know he has won by knockout off his back, with upkicks and unexpected strikes. I’m well-trained, I’m focused. He’s the type of fighter that will try to finish me, take me down and keep me there and win round after round, but the only way you’ll win round after round is if I stand still. I’m hungry, man. I’m here for a fight.”
Do you think Niko Price will listen to Alex Oliveira and get the snip?
