Former WSOF standout Nick Newell has always turned heads being a one-armed fighter. Born with a congenital disease that caused his left arm to underdevelop, Newell has regardless racked up a 14-1 professional MMA record.

Newell had retired following a loss to current UFC lightweight and former WSOF champ Justin Gaethje, but is now returning under Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series according to a report from MMA Fighting, which puts him one step away from a UFC contract.

Newell, who’s been gunning for a UFC fight for ages now, was extremely grateful for the opportunity:

“I want to thank Dana White, Sean Shelby and Mick Maynard for believing in me and giving me a shot. I still have to go out there and deliver. I’m grateful for the opportunity.”

Newell’s manager, Ali Abdel-Aziz, echoed that sentiment, specifically mentioning White in making Newell’s dreams come true:

“I want to thank Dana White. He’s been making dreams come true for 20 years, and he just made one of Nick’s biggest dreams become true. I’m grateful. Stuff like this makes me humble.”

Should Newell impress UFC brass with a victory under the Contender Series, a UFC contract would be the next step.

Current UFC fighter Sean O’Malley did just that, winning by spectacular first-round knockout on Tuesday Night Contender Series before promptly earning a UFC contract. He’s now the most hyped up-and-coming 135-pound combatant in MMA.

Do you expect to see the grappling ace earn his way to the UFC?

Manager Says Tony Ferguson Will ‘Never Fight Again’ After UFC 223

Tony Ferguson may never fight again after his upcoming lightweight title fight at UFC 223 against undefeated Dagestani Khabib Nurmagomedov, at least according to Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdel-Aziz. Tony Ferguson may never fight again after his upcoming lightweight title fight at UFC 223 against undefeated Dagestani Khabib Nurmagomedov, at least according to Nurmagomedov’s manager Ali Abdel-Aziz.

Abdel-Aziz clearly has a bias towards his own fighter but did explain his reasoning: Ferguson is the only opponent to have actually made Nurmagomedov mad. While past foes had shown respect and received mercy in return, he detailed that “El Cucuy” has not (MMA Fighting):

“I feel sorry for Tony Ferguson, because on April 7, Tony Ferguson is probably never gonna fight again. I’m concerned for his well-being, I’m serious. I’m not just saying that to promote a fight. I’m concerned for him. I’m hearing some reports — and I respect Eddie Bravo, he’s a legend — I’m hearing that he’d accept, he’d be more than happy for Khabib to take him down. And I’ll tell you something … he’s not gonna be a normal human being. He’ll be in trouble. Because if he accepts takedown from Khabib and he will take him down, he will disfigure his whole entire face.”

Abdel-Aziz mentioned Khabib’s fights with Edson Barboza and Michael Johnson as examples of opponents who essentially didn’t piss off Nurmagomedov, and were treated accordingly:

“Khabib was very nice to Barboza, he was very nice to Michael Johnson. But I’m telling you something. One thing that Khabib is not gonna do, he’s not gonna be nice to Tony Ferguson. My prediction: Tony Ferguson will probably need to take two years off or maybe not come back after this fight.”

Ferguson has never shied away from causing controversy or getting confrontational, to the point where Nurmagomedov won’t hold back if he gets the interim champ on the ground where he does his most brutal work. And with UFC gold on the line, something Nurmagomedov has been demanding for ages, the stakes are that much higher.

Do you agree with Khabib’s manager that Ferguson’s antics have angered Nurmagomedov so much that the Dagestani will show no mercy? Will Ferguson fight again in the event he is brutalized by Nurmagomedov as Abdel-Aziz suggests?

UFC 223 takes place on April 7 in Brooklyn, New York.

WSOF VP Ali Abdel-Aziz Goes on the Warpath After Rousimar Palhares Pulls Out of Title Fight With Jon Fitch

(Just another day in the life of Paul Harris. Photo via Getty.)

Like my sexual history, the WSOF career of Rousimar Palhares has been brief and emotionally devastating. After being gifted an immediate shot at the WSOF welterweight title against Steve Carl at WSOF 9, Palhares secured said title via a brutal heel-hook in just over a minute. The victory set Palhares up with a fight against fellow UFC castaway Jon Fitch that was scheduled to go down at WSOF 11 on July 5th, but today brought the news that Palhares has withdrawn from the fight to take care of his sick mother.

A reasonable excuse if there ever was one, but one that also apparently pissed WSOF executive vice president Ali Abdel-Aziz right the f*ck off. Aziz, who has publicly spatted with WSOF fighter Josh Burkman (and Vinny Magalhaes) in the past, told MMAFighting earlier today that he is sick of being taken advantage by guys like Palhares with their “bullshit stories” about their “sick mothers” and “impoverished upbringing.” Okay, those quotes were made up, but here’s what he actually said:

Enough is enough. I have to put WSOF first and everyone else second. No more Mr. Nice Guy.

We’re getting screwed. I’m trying to put on a fight card and be nice to fighters, and now they don’t want to fight each other.

I’m getting sick of this. If a fighter is not going to respect the promotion, he is going to be shelved for a long time. I will not release anyone to another promotion. Fighters must honor their contracts.

Eesh. I can see where Aziz is coming from here, but for Christ’s sake, we’re talking about Rousimar’s mother here. Show the Mapinguari her due respect, Ali, or suffer the consequences.

In light of the cancellation, WSOF 11 will now be headlined by our boy Nick Newell challenging lightweight champion Justin Gaethje for the WSOF title. We’ve thrown a video of Newell’s most recent victory over Sabah Fadai at WSOF 7 below.
