MMA is an inherently dangerous sport, but some injuries stick out more than others.

A black eye, busted nose, and oftentimes blood are par for the course, but broken arms and legs are a tad more painful and gruesome.

Some fighters have a reputation for causing serious bodily harm like Frank Mir and Rousimar Palhares, and other fighters were victim to terrible circumstances.

We took a look back at the 10 worst injuries in MMA history.

10. Frank Mir vs. Tim Sylvia

Mir’s name will pop up a few times on this list, a true adherer to the notion of tap-or-snap.

When Mir took on Tim Sylvia for the vacant heavyweight title back at UFC 53, it didn’t take long for him to exercise that concept. Within a minute of the first round, Mir had a hold of the Mainiac’s arm, and before anyone knew it referee Herb Dean stopped the fight.

Sylvia protested the stoppage, but instant replay showed Mir had snapped his arm like a twig. The crowd gasped in horror as they watched the big screen replay. Sylvia would end up requiring several rods and a multitude of stitches to put his broken arm back together again.

Truly a devastating injury.

Well, the injury bug always seems to strike on the grandest stages in the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA), and that has once again proven to be true regarding this weekend’s (May 14, 2016) upcoming blockbuster UFC 198 card from Curitiba, Brazil.

According to Yahoo! Sports, former long-time middleweight title holder Anderson “The Spider” Silva has been forced out of his scheduled main card bout with former The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) finalist Uriah Hall.

Apparently Silva has been suffering abdominal pains that may even require him to undergo gall bladder surgery.

The UFC’s medical consultant, Jeff Davidson, commented on the situation:

“Anderson developed abdominal discomfort [Monday and] further evaluation today is consistent with acute cholecystitis,” Davidson said Tuesday. “He will be seen by a surgeon today for possible surgery.”

While this news is certainly unfortunate for fans and for the card, it obviously also serves as quite a negative setback for the 41-year-old Silva as well.

“The Spider” is coming off of a disappointing decision loss to Michael Bisping last February after spending a year on the sidelines due to a 2015 positive drug test for performance-enhancing-drugs (PEDs).

The UFC appears to be searching for a possible replacement opponent for Silva, although it may be difficult to find a man willing to accept the daunting task of clashing with the ultra-dangerous Hall on less than a week’s notice.

Stay tuned as more news becomes available on the situation.

An ultra-intriguing middleweight showdown will go down in just over a week, as legendary former champion Anderson “The Spider” Silva will meet Michael “The Count” Bisping in the main event of UFC Fight Night 84 on February 27, 2016 from the O2 Arena in London.

Silva will be making his return from a one year suspension after testing positive for multiple performance-enhancing-drugs (PEDs) surrounding his January 2015 bout with Nick Diaz.

Prior to that fight, “The Spider” had dealt with a gruesome leg injury suffered in his second consecutive loss to Chris Weidman at UFC 168.

A man many consider to be amongst the greatest mixed martial artists of all-time, Silva hasn’t won a fight since October 2012. At 40 years of age, however, the Brazilian is aiming to make one more run at the title he once held for nearly seven years.

Bisping on the other hand, is currently ranked No. 7, and has been relevant in the 185-pound division for years now. Always seeming to fall short when he reaches a top contender bout, this fight with Silva will be pivotal for the outspoken Brit.

With two straight victories over the likes of CB Dolloway and Thales Leites, “The Count” will look to keep his win streak going as he nears the title shot he has forever longed for.
