‘UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir’ Extended Video Preview

A young champion that has dominated every opponent in the Octagon with his boxing vs. a veteran ex-champ whose ground-wizardry has carried him to his second career comeback. Sure, it would have been nice to see JDS vs. Overeem, but we’re staying positive here, and you couldn’t write a better storyline for this May 26th heavyweight title fight. Also featured in the new hype video for UFC 146 is the return of heavyweight phenom Cain Velasquez, who promises a victory against promotional newcomer Antonio Silva — a gigantic opportunity for both men. Can Bigfoot make a splash in the UFC, or is he just a speed-bump on the way to Cain’s next title shot?

UFC 146 Heavyweight Shuffle: Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio Silva Confirmed as Co-Headliner

(“So this ‘acromegaly‘ shit…do they carry it at GNC?”)

When Frank Mir was called up to replace Alistair Overeem in UFC 146‘s main event, former heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez was briefly left without an opponent on the card. But over the weekend, Dana White announced that Antonio Silva will be stepping up to replace Mir against Velasquez. The fight will serve as the co-main event for UFC 146: Dos Santos vs. Mir, which goes down May 26th in Las Vegas.

Antonio Silva will be making his UFC debut against Velasquez, and hasn’t competed since his knockout loss to Daniel Cormier in the semi-finals of Strikeforce’s heavyweight tournament last September. As for Silva’s original opponent Roy Nelson, Big Country is still expected to remain on the card though a replacement opponent hasn’t been named yet. The current lineup for UFC 146 is after the jump…

Lights, Cameras…Little Plastic Cups? UFC 146 Fighters Drug Tested After Press Conference

(Test this man! No one has that much style naturally)

Mike Chiappetta reports that the Nevada State Athletic Commission decided to test some of UFC 146’s big boys yesterday after a press conference held in Las Vegas to promote the May 26th event. Fighters given the surprise tests were heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos, #1 contender Alistair Overeem, Frank Mir, Cain Velasquez, Roy Nelson and Antonio Silva.

Nevada has been able to test athletes randomly for a while now, but only recently got an increase in their department’s funding that has allowed them to begin such testing in earnest, according to Chiappetta. The state commission decided to take advantage of all the fighters coming to the state, and save the money it might have cost to go to them, in effect. As the MMAFighting report explains:

Nevada has been able to test athletes randomly for a while now, but only recently got an increase in their department’s funding that has allowed them to begin such testing in earnest, according to Chiappetta. The state commission decided to take advantage of all the fighters coming to the state, and save the money it might have cost to go to them, in effect. As the MMAFighting report explains:

According to Kizer, the commission currently has a deal in place with Quest Diagnostics which allows the lab to send testers on-site to obtain samples. After the conclusion of the UFC 146 press conference, the fighters were taken in groups of two to an MGM Grand VIP lounge to submit their sample. Kizer could not say when the results would be made available, saying they may not be publicly released until after the event’s May 26 completion. Of course, that would likely change if any of the tests came back positive and put one of the night’s big fights into jeopardy.”

As you might remember, after some difficulties keeping to Nevada’s required drug testing late last year, Alistair Overeem was given a license that required he undergo two more random tests from the commission. The surprise one he submitted to yesterday will count as one. We wouldn’t even deign to imagine that Alistair uses any banned performance enhancing substances, but we just hope he doesn’t have any banned recreational substances passed off to him while party rocking from bad influences.

Check out the video (for the press conference, not the urine collection, you weirdos!) below:

If there’s one surefire way to keep your job in the UFC as a fighter, it is by impressing Dana White and the fans. We’ve seen it occur multiple times where a guy who obviously doesn’t have the skill set to be in the UFC remain employed for simply being an exciting and fan-favorite fighter.

The fighters on this list need to rebound in impressive fashion in their next fight. There is no way a fighter can be totally focused on their bout when having to worry about being handed their pink slip for losing.

Some of the fighters on this list even won their last fight, but still need to come back strong to put any doubters to rest.

If there’s one thing fans and fighters can relate to, enjoying it’s job security, and the fighters on this list can ensure some measure of that by coming back in impressive fashion for their next bout.

Scratch the “liking” of Roy Nelson’s Facebook page to make him drop to light heavyweight—he will fight at least once more in the heavyweight division.

Nelson (16-7) is now scheduled to welcome another Strikeforce heavyweight into the UFC when he faces Antonio Silva (16-3) at UFC 146 in Las Vegas on May 26th.

Nelson started a Facebook campaign to help gain 100,000 more likes on his Facebook page, and if it happened, Nelson said he would drop to 205 pounds. It didn’t take long for the page to swell up with “likes” and get super close to the goal.

Unfortunately though, the call for him to drop to 205 will be postponed—at least for now—in favor of a matchup against Silva.

Nelson is coming off of a unanimous decision loss to Fabricio Werdum at UFC 143 in February. This could be a must-win fight for Nelson who has currently lost three of his last four fights in the UFC and has lost five of his last eight fights in MMA.

Silva on the other hand hasn’t fought since his loss to Daniel Cormier in the semifinals of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix when Cormier KO’d the behemoth in the first round. Silva was originally slated to fight No. 1 contender for the UFC heavyweight belt, Alistair Overeem, before Overeem switched promotions.

UFC 146 is headlined by a heavyweight title bout between Overeem and current UFC heavyweight champion, Junior dos Santos. The main card will be aired on pay-per-view while the undercard will be live on FX.

UFC 146 is expected to take place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Roy Nelson vs. Bigfoot Silva Booked for UFC 146 on May 26

(The battle of the chins, ladies and gentlemen. One figurative, and the other literal. Which will reign supreme?)

It looks like Mayor McCheese has granted Roy Nelson a temporary reprieve from his Facebook sponsored drop to light heavyweight, as it is being reported that the TUF 10 winner has been booked to square off against former EliteXC heavyweight champion Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva at UFC 146 in May.

Continuing the UFC’s ongoing trend of purging Strikeforce of any remaining talent, it was rumored a couple months ago that Silva would be facing Cain Velasquez for his UFC debut, which was tentatively set for April. Rumors quickly shifted to a possible Velasquez/Frank Mir matchup, and “Bigfoot” was all but forgotten about in the mix of things. After shocking the world by handing Fedor Emelianenko his first (T)KO loss since December of 2000 at last year’s Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva card, “Bigfoot” would find himself on the wrong end of a slightly less shocking KO loss to Daniel Cormier in the semifinals of Strikeforce’s long running heavyweight tournament in his last contest.

This may be a must win situation for Nelson, who has dropped three of his last four fights (all by unanimous decision), most recently getting sliced and diced by Fabricio Werdum, who also holds a win over Silva, for three rounds at UFC 143. “Big Country” will again find himself with a huge size disadvantage — nearly 9 inches in reach and around 20 pounds in weight. Perhaps this is Dana White‘s way of forcing Nelson to come to the same realization as that of his own, by beating it into him.

Then again, Nelson is a BJJ black belt with a granite tungsten chin, whereas Silva is a BJJ black belt who has shown a tendency to get rocked in many of his fights despite having a jaw that would make that one prisoner from Tango & Cash green with envy. Unless Silva manages to out grapple Nelson, or somehow submit him, you have to imagine this is fight is essentially Nelson’s to lose.

UFC 146 is set to go down at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada on May 26th, and features a heavyweight title clash between Alistair Overeem and Junior Dos Santos as its headliner. Make your picks, Potato Nation.
