Antonio Tarver

Antonio Tarver has failed to obtain a boxing license ahead of his scheduled fight with former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir.

The former light-heavyweight champion was set to face off against Mir on the undercard of Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren which will take place in Atlanta on April 17.

However, the 52-year-old did not meet the requirements to compete according to the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission’s Executive Director Matt Woodruff.

Speaking to ESPN, Woodruff revealed Tarver failed to obtain a license based on a state bylaw relating to his age. The Georgia code states that anyone 50 years or older must have participated in at least 10 pro fights in the immediately preceding 10 years, “including at least four professional matches or contests of boxing in the immediately preceding four years.”

Tarver has competed just five times in the last 10 years. ‘The Magic Man’ retired six years ago after drawing with Steve Cunningham who is now thought to be stepping in to fight Mir next month.

Mir hasn’t fought in MMA since October 2019, and it doesn’t seem like he plans to return to the sport anytime soon. The heavyweight legend recently revealed he is trying to extend his competitive career by experimenting with new sports. Mir will make his boxing debut on April 17 if his bout against Cunningham is approved.

Former UFC heavyweight king Frank Mir is excited about making his professional boxing debut against Antonio Tarver on April 17.

Mir will square off against the former light-heavyweight champion on the undercard of Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren.

In an interview with MMA Junkie on Friday, Mir explained why he was crossing into a new sport at 41-years-old, he said.

“It’s a great opportunity for a challenge. I’ve always wanted to step in the boxing ring. As mixed martial artists, we always like challenging ourselves at the individual aspects of what makes our sport the decathlon of the martial arts world. Competing against someone who is a legitimate former world champion (does that).”

Mir believes he is in a “win-win” situation in his fight against Tarver.

“Realistically, this is a win-win for me because I’ve got nothing to lose,” Mir said. “I go out there, and even if I were to lose the match – and I intend on really trying to win this fight – win it early, I don’t know about going 10 rounds. I go the distance and look good, that’s a victory for mixed martial arts. I know what it’s like to be the guy defending your sport against and outsider coming in (like I did against Brock Lesnar). It’s really nerve-racking, so the stress is really all on his end.”

Mir hasn’t fought in MMA since October 2019 and it doesn’t seem like he plans to return to the sport anytime soon.

The heavyweight legend will try to prolong his competitive career by experimenting with new sports.

“Honestly, I would love to keep doing this,” Mir said. “I’m 41, and I’m having my own midlife crisis. My wife makes jokes about it all the time. Most guys go out there and get a girlfriend or a brand new Corvette to drive; I’m out there sitting going, ‘Hey, maybe I can go into boxing. Can I get into the K-1? What wrestling tournament can I get into?’ I’m trying to find these different ways, because I know my window of competition is closing on me.”

Former UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir is set to make his boxing debut on April 17 against former Boxing champion Antonio Tarver.

In a post to his Twitter Mir shared that he has always wanted to test himself inside the Boxing ring and when the oportunity arose he had to take it.

“I am a compeitior. I have been all my life. I take on challenges to grow and better myself as a person. I have always wanted to test myself in the boxing ring so when this opportunity arose I jumped on it.”

Mir last competed in MMA in October of 2019 and had a win over fellow veteran Roy Nelson to break a four fight losing streak. His opponent to be, Tarver, has seen a longer break since his last competition, which was a draw to Steve Cunningham in 2015.

In a post on his Twitter Tarver shared that he had signed a contract to fight on April 17 but was yet to match up with Mir as his opponent.

This fight joins the card to be headlined by YouTuber and controversial Boxer Jake Paul, against retired multiple-time MMA champion Ben Askren.

The event to be held by the promotion Triller looks to include multiple former MMA fighters as well as a range of other boxers to fill out the events lineup.

As Mir has competed at Heavyweight during his time in MMA it is likely this is where the bout will be contested, however, for Tarver this is a switch as he traditionally spent most of his career at Light-Heavyweight. Heading into this matchup Tarver boasts a record of 31 wins, 6 losses, and 1 draw, with his last loss being in 2009 by unanimous decision.

Currently, Mir’s MMA record sits at 19 wins and 13 losses.

Many in the boxing community have given Conor McGregor no chance in a potential boxing match with former pound-for-pound king Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

Former boxing light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver is no different. In fact, Tarver said that Nate Diaz, McGregor’s rival in the Octagon, would ‘beat his ass’ in a boxing match:

“Not a chance in hell,” Tarver said Monday on The MMA Hour. “Because Conor McGregor can’t beat the top-20 in the division, how the f*ck is he going to beat Floyd Mayweather? Not a f*cking chance in hell (of even a puncher’s chance), because he’s not punching with those four-ounce gloves on. He’s punching with 10-ounce gloves on. Big difference.

“It’s a money fight. I don’t know if it’s a mockery, but it’s a money fight. That’s what it’s all about. Conor McGregor can’t beat Nate Diaz in a boxing match. In a boxing match, [Diaz] will beat his ass, and there’s a whole lot of other fighters out there who will beat his ass in a boxing match.”

McGregor and Diaz have met twice in the Octagon, with Diaz submitting the Irishman at UFC 196 in March 2016 and McGregor scoring a majority decision victory over Diaz in their rematch at UFC 202 last August.

Tarver, however, doesn’t feel as if McGregor’s fighting skills or his power would transfer over to the squared circle. The former light heavyweight titleholder even said that Mayweather may be able to knock the “Notorious” one:

“I think Floyd can knock him out, because Floyd is a boxer,” Tarver said. “[McGregor] is not going to know what to do. He hasn’t had the repetitions. He hasn’t had the experiences. He don’t know what it’s going to take. Sh*t, he gets tired in a five-round fight, even though they’re going five rounds and they’re wrestling. What the hell you think is going to happen in round six, seven, if he gets that far? When he’s mentally fatigued and tired? Because I’ve seen him in the Octagon getting mentally fatigued and tired. So he just needs to be taught.”

Do you agree with Tarver’s comments?
