Four Brief Thoughts on Josh Neer’s Gym Fight Video and the Ensuing Investigation

(Still a better fight than Dan Kelly vs. Patrick Walsh.)

By Jared Jones

By now, you’ve probably seen the video of UFC/Bellator veteran Josh Neer brutalizing Patrick Martin, a non-professional fighter who was talking a whole heap of mess to Neer on the social medias, in his Iowa-based gym. Reactions have ranged from “Dude got what was coming to him” to “Neer is a scumbag who should be brought in on assault charges”, so we figured we might as well weigh in on the story in the most cynical way possible. Starting with…

1. Dude *did* have it coming to him

Look, if I don’t want a chef to spit in my food, then I sure as hell don’t spend the time between appetizers and entree berating him for not being able to properly poach a goddamn egg. It’s Newton’s Third Law in its most basic form. When you show up to a professional fighter’s place of business looking for an unsanctioned/street fight, you can’t exactly play the victim when he inevitably grants you what you were asking for.

Anyone can talk all the trash they want online without fear of repercussion — its what makes the Internet both a hilarious and oft depressing place — and Neer should have simply ignored Martin rather than playing into his trollish game. The moment Martin stepped foot into Neer’s gym, however, he became a threat.

2. Patrick Martin does not seem like a particularly respectable/smart person

According to several reports, Martin stands at 6’6″ and clocks in at around 250 pounds. That he chose to pick a fight with a lifelong 155er through Facebook and continue to talk trash after the fact says more about his mental stability than anything else. Look at it from Neer’s perspective: You’re a 51-fight veteran and a guy who has fought for the 2 biggest MMA promotions in the world. You undoubtedly have a bit of an ego because of this. All of a sudden, a guy twice your size shows up to your gym looking to fight you. You know next to nothing about this man (Martin had taken a few classes at Neer’s gym prior to their confrontation) other than that he wants to “put you in an ambulance.” Walking away is no longer an option at this point.

For what it’s worth, here’s Martin’s side of the story (via BloodyElbow):

My side is that we had a 3 minute sparring round that he couldn’t score or take me down! He threw wild punches I dodged and counter and with my 16oz gloves I did all the punching also mixed a couple kicks in! Everything you see is after the round bell sounded as I turned away from him picking up my mouth piece I dropped after the round!

He’s adding all this talk, that I talk shit about MMA fighters when I talked shit to him after disrespecting me about a wrestling drill I was tired in! So I left it alone till I saw him out and I bought him a couple beers and then he walked of talking shit to his buddy about me! So I blew up on him on Facebook demanding a full contact spar! I said I’ll bring 16oz. So the beef is with him and a couple other of his gyms fighter who was talking shit on my page!

I’m not scared of fucking Josh Neer! Nor any man! He don’t wanna show the full video so I’ll let him think he won! I seen his game plan fighting me and that’s not gonna work!

I hate to break it to you, Pat, but you don’t show up to a street fight (especially one set in your opponent’s home turf) demanding rules and regulations as if it were a sanctioned bout. Three minute rounds? 16 oz gloves? And now you want a rematch? My God, dude. Neer didn’t hit you hard enough.

3. Then again, neither does Neer

Here’s Neer’s side of the story, also via Bloody Elbow:

Basically the guys a dumbass and been talking shit about MMA fighters for a month. On and on, I usually ignore him but this Saturday he wrote me on Facebook the message i gave. He had written 10 messages to me talking shit which I ignored, but this time I said if you really want to fight come to the gym Monday at 5:30.

He showed up at 6:10, 40 mins into my practice. And then I asked him if he wanted to fight Rakim or me and Rakim is bigger then me so of course he chose me.

The idea that the majority of MMA fighters are (or are supposed to be) these zenlike, death-before-dishonor practicing “artists” is laughable enough, but especially so in the case of Neer. Here’s a guy who has been arrested multiple times for DUI, including one incident where he led police on an 80+mph chase after hitting a car from behind at a stoplight.

You say Josh should have just done the “honorable” thing and brushed Martin off? Well go ahead and tell him that after you inform the Diaz brothers that not every fighter in the world is out to get them.

4. Nothing will come of the IAC’s “investigation” of Neer

In the time since Neer’s ill-posted video has gone viral, the Iowa Athletic Commission has launched an “investigation” of Neer to see if any punishable actions can be taken against him. This while admitting that they “hold no regulatory authority over what happens in gyms, where such informal fights are not uncommon.” (via Sherdog):

Josh Neer is reportedly under investigation by the Iowa Athletic Commission (IAC) after a video was posted online showing the UFC and Bellator veteran allegedly beating up another man in a gym fight.

“We are aware of the situation. I have our legal team taking a thorough look at our rules,” said IAC Executive Director Joe Walsh. “We’re checking to see if we have anything on the books that covers this.”

Of course, if the Iowa Commission is run anything like NSAC, nothing of importance will actually happen to Neer. Hell, they probably haven’t even found the rulebook yet.

So what have we learned today, kids?

1) Don’t pick a fight with a professional fighter, and if you must, make sure it remains within the realm of the Twittersphere where you stand a chance of winning.

2) If your said fighter being targeted, don’t feed the trolls.

3) Mixed martial artists are not Bruce Lee and need to stop being treated as if they are comparable to him in any way, shape, or form.

All that said, Neer’s soccer kick after the fact was probably unnecessary. Probably.

New, Sickening Details Emerge in Alexander Emelianenko Sexual Assault Case

(Yup, that’s the face of a rapist alright.)

A couple months back. I lamented the fact that Alexander Emelianenko had managed to settle down with a willing human female despite being incarcerated for the sexual assault of a different, unwilling 26 year-old woman (among other things). While details were scarce at the time as to what Emelianenko had allegedly done to Moldovan Polina Stepanova, a housekeeper at Alex’s apartment complex, Russian publication BFM.Ru  (via Bloody Elbow) recently released some of the horrific particulars of the case.

Read on if you can stomach it.

The charges currently pending against Emelianenko range from sexual assault to “kidnapping” by withholding a passport and the forced use of “narcotic drugs or psychotropic substances.”

It appears the veteran fighter stole his substitute housekeeper’s passport from her purse while she was cleaning the house and extorted her for sexual favours.

“According to Pauline, she was removed for a long time in the apartment, then Emelianenko offered her to play cards with him, but she refused. After that, he slapped her on the head. He forced her to smoke a cigarette with “grass” and drink alcohol. All requests to let her go home and not to touch Emelianenko were refused.”

However, Emelianenko did offer her to “jump out the window” if she desired.

In the time since Stepanova has pressed charges against Emelianenko, she has additionally been facing harassment from his friends, who I can only assume look something like this. In addition to threatening the lives of Stepanova and her children, Emelianenko’s friends have allegedly attempted to bribe her to change her testimony.

Alexander, on the other hand, is claiming that the “intimate” act that happened between himself and Stepanova was consensual.

Ugh. I just don’t understand how one Emelianenko can be a harmless, humble, ice-cream loving teddy bear outside of the ring and the other a sadistic rapist. I mean, I have two brothers, and not a one of us have ever been convicted of a sex crime.

Arrested, yes. But her family later dropped the charges, alright, and how was I supposed to know she was actually 16? SHE WAS SMOKING PALL MALL 100′s WHEN WE WERE INTRODUCED, FOR CHRIST’S SAKE.

The Mayhem Continues: Ian McCall’s Ex-Wife Files Assault Charges Against Jason Miller

(via Shay’s Instagram

When we last checked in with former Strikeforce/UFC fighter turned certifiably crazy person Jason Miller, he had just finished pleading not guilty to resisting and obstructing officer charges following a standoff with California SWAT…that he live tweeted. Classic Mayhem, amiright?

In any case, if you thought that pesky little incident would slow down the man who’s been arrested more times in the past couple years than Kat Williams, then you probably didn’t read the headline of this article. Because now, it appears that Ian McCall‘s ex-wife, Shay, is filing assault charges against Miller following a dust-up at his Mission Viejo home earlier this week.

McCall took to Instagram last night to post photos of the alleged assault, along with the following statement:

3 days I was physco ally assaulted by #mayhem #miller #ufc just for confronting him on something I didn’t want to be around. I was strangled…. Ext yes I did press charges.

Thank you everyone for your support he will pay when reality kicks in.. If he ever does and he is in jail.

“But, your honor, my client is already pending trial for assault, so by the law of double jeopardy, I demand that you dismiss all charges!” — Miller’s lawyer, Shaggy 2 Dope

For what it’s worth, Miller has responded to the allegations via Twitter.

Honestly, I think Shaggy’s defense is a little more airtight.

We’ll keep you up to date on Miller latest (allegedly) heinous crime as details are made available. And in case you’re wondering what Uncle Creepy’s thoughts are on all this, well, let’s just say that he wants no part of it.

Bellator Middleweight Joe Vedepo Arrested Following Drunken Bar Brawl With Police

I’ve got a dilemma on my hands, Nation. I’m trying to think of the most hacky, Holland-esque series of puns to inform you that Bellator fighter Joe “The Doctor” Vedepo was arrested over the weekend for his eleventh alcohol-related offense, and I’m not sure which option to choose. Should it be Joe Vedepo Fills Iowa Officer’s Prescription for Head-Butts, or maybe something with more alliteration, like Buzzed Bellator Brawler Beats Bobby in Bloody Bar Battle? So many choices, but I think I’ll go with my original idea: “The Doctor” Is In, And He’s F*cking Sh*tfaced.

I should’ve gone with the second one. Aaaaaanyway, former UFC fighter turned Bellator fighter Joe “The Doctor” Vedepo has something you might call “an alcohol problem”, in that he’s been “arrested” “ten times” for “public intoxication” in his native Iowa and been deemed a “habitual line-stepper offender of the state intoxication law.” This all culminated last weekend when Vedepo, likely drinking off the sorrows of his third round TKO loss to King Mo Lawal at Bellator 131, decided to get into a drunken brawl with police outside an Iowa bar that left one officer hospitalized. The Gazette reports:

According to Iowa City police criminal complaints, officers responded to the Sports Column at 2:22 p.m. Friday for a report of a man inside who refused to leave. Responding officers encountered Jody “Joe” Vedepo, 31, of Columbus Junction.

Police said Vedepo told officers he “knew his rights” and was going back into the bar. Vedepo resisted the officers and head butted one officer in the chest, sending him to the hospital with injuries to his back. Officers took Vedepo to the ground and attempted to handcuff him, but he rolled his body and kicked his legs. Officers deployed a Taser in an attempt to subdue Vedepo, but it was ineffective, police said.

Ah, Vedepo went with the old “I know my rights” defense. Classic mistake.

Ah, Vedepo went with the old “I know my rights” defense. Classic mistake. Had Vedepo been watching the news lately instead of getting blackout drunk by 2 pm each day, he would know that police officers are well-aware that we “know our rights.” They know that, technically, they can’t frisk anyone they stop on the street, or arrest you for being black on a Tuesday. It’s just that they don’t care.

(*nails fadeaway three-pointer*)

Well, I’m pretty much out of jokes for this one. You got anything else for us, Gazette?

Vedepo had slow, slurred speech, was “very unsteady” on his feet and had difficulty speaking in complete sentences, police said. His post arrest breath test indicated he had a blood alcohol content of .241 percent or three times the legal limit to operate a vehicle in Iowa.

Vedepo was arrested and now faces one count of assault causing injury to a peace officer, an aggravated misdemeanor; two counts of assault on peace officers, a serious misdemeanor; and one count of public intoxication, a simple misdemeanor. He remains in custody on a $10,000 cash-only bond.

How to Tell That You Have a Drinking Problem, Pt. 1: Your blood alcohol percentage is a higher number than the f*cking time of day that you were arrested.

In response to the news of Vedepo’s arrest, Bellator President Scott Coker sent a text message to MMAJunkie stating that, “If everything is exactly what it says, we will be cutting him.”

If it weren’t for those taser burns, I’d say the fact that Vedepo was fired via text message must sting the most right about now.

Thiago Silva Beats Aggravated Assault Case, Because His Ex-Wife Has Left the Country

(Deal with it. / Photo via Getty)

In a victory for bad guys everywhere, former UFC light-heavyweight Thiago Silva has been officially cleared of all charges related to an alleged spree of mayhem in January and February of this year. Silva had been accused of sticking a gun in his ex-wife Thaysa’s mouth and threatening to kill her, sending her bonus death-threats via text message, then driving over to Pablo Popovitch’s gym and threatening to shoot up the place. He was eventually charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and resisting arrest without violence.

Luckily — for Silva, not for society — a Florida judge dropped all the charges:

Sherdog.com confirmed the news with a Broward County State Attorney’s office representative following an initial report from TMZ. The representative said that the charges were likely dropped because the alleged victim had become uncooperative and investigators had determined that she had likely moved out of the country.

Wait, so Silva is a free man because his alleged victim won’t testify and is currently in hiding? Great work as usual, Florida.

Silva was released from jail on $25,000 bond in March, and has been living as a humble kickboxing instructor since then, teaching and training out of the Blackzilians camp. He was slated to return to competition at Fight Time 20 last month, but pulled out of the match due to a knee injury.
