Bringing 2016 to an end with a bang are some of the most pivotal UFC fights in the promotions history. Potentially seeing the first champion to hold belts in two weight classes, UFC 205 is arguably the most influential event. The November 12 card will make history as the first to be held on New York soil too, and Eddie Alvarez could become the party spoiler in many ways against ‘The Notorious.’ Surrounding this 155-pound title clash is a growing division between rankings, and fights that bring in more money-Alvarez vs. McGregor falls under the latter.

Seeking a fresh start as the UFC women’s bantamweight champion is Ronda Rousey. The formerly dominant queen of the division was sent hurtling in to turmoil y Holly Holm at UFC 193. Changing places twice since ‘Rowdy’ lost it, the belt now sits around the waist of Amanda Nunes. ‘Lioness’ takes on Rousey in the UFC 207 main event, and UFC 206 has also been a topic of hot debate, but perhaps for the wrong reasons.

Dana White-Georges St-Pierre-GSP

GSP vs. UFC

Back when the promotion was still budding in terms of popularity, welterweight champion and MMA posterboy Georges St-Pierre was king. Defeating everyone and in dominant fashion, ‘GSP’ is widely considered, if not one of, the greatest champion in UFC history. When UFC 206 was announced for Toronto, Canada this coming December 10, ‘Rush’ wanted on that PPV. Unfortunately due to the Reebok deal and other contractual disputes, so basically money, St-Pierre could not come to an agreement for a comeback. Having been out of action since 2013 when he gave up the belt and retired, ‘Rush’ now finds himself at loggerheads with the UFC.

Speaking with our good friends over at Submission Radio, former Pancrase and UFC heavyweight champion Bas Rutten gave his two cents. ‘El Guapo’ acknowledges the sheer drawing power of Rousey and McGregor, even compared to GSP, but feels the UFC should keep St-Pierre all the same:

Bas Rutten is Pro-GSP

“He will fight, it’s a money thing. You know, you have Rousey, you have McGregor, he has millions, millions, millions, you know, and if he wants to make a comeback, this is the right time to make a comeback, since he’s a really beloved fighter and everybody wants to see him. But of course he’s got new demands. He’s gotta go like, “I’m not gonna fight for what you guys paid me at the time. Right now you guys just sold for 4.2 billion dollars, I know there is money and everybody wants a piece of it”. You see all the other fighters started doing it. So that’s what I think happened and he’s trying to shoot for a high number and I think the UFC should let him fight and it will happen. I truly believe so. Because they’re gonna need a star, cause McGregor, the rumours are very almost certain that he’s going to take a year off.

RouseyMcGregorOutburts

You know, Ronda Rousey, well we’re going to have to see how she makes her return. I think she will do great, but what if she loses? You lose two of your bigger draws for the UFC. So then a guy like GSP will automatically fit in really nice for them. So eventually it will happen, I guess. But right now I think it’s a power move to say, “no, we’re not going to do it”. It’s like McGregor and the time when he didn’t show up (to a press conference). They put their foot down and they said, “no, you’re off the card”. And sometimes you have to do it like that because otherwise you give them too much lenience and then negations will never be in your favour. But eventually, with what’s going to happen with McGregor and Rousey – and Rousey, don’t get me wrong, even if she wins, I don’t know how long she still will be fighting or if there will be another fight afterwards. We’re going to have to find that out. But losing McGregor by himself is already a big thing. Rousey, hopefully she wins this fight because yes, she’s a huge draw.”

UFC 203 was arguably one of the strangest cards in MMA history. Leading up to the pay-per-view show in Cleveland there were already a number of bizarre incidents. Perhaps most noteworthy was the elevator accident that caused CB Dollaway to be removed from the card. Following the ‘hellevator’ saga, the UFC 203 card got underway, and things continued on the same note. There’s no doubt the event was exciting and great to watch, but also fraught with oddities.

During the co-main and headlining bouts there were a number of very interesting moments. Let’s start with Fabricio Werdum vs. Travis Browne. The former champion Werdum defeated Browne by unanimous decision, but the fight could easily have been stopped when ‘Hapa’ called time. Perhaps the referee thought Browne was having problems with his glove, it would later become clear that he’d actually suffered a broken finger. After defeating his rival, Werdum would kick coach Edmond Tarverdyan in a post-fight scuffle. A gruesome image of Browne’s finger invading Werdum’s eye would later emerge too.

Ouch

Then came the main event action between Stipe Miocic and Alistair Overeem. It was a wild affair, with both men scoring knockdowns in the early going. Many criticized ‘The Reem’ for running during the fight, truth be told it was probably more due to him being groggy from the punishment he’d absorbed. Miocic defended his title with a clean knockout, but then Overeem had a conspiracy theory to share in the post-fight interview.

The Dutchman claimed Miocic had tapped out during an early grappling exchange on the canvas. Joe Rogan reviewed the footage on the big screen, and it appeared ‘The Demolition Man’ was wrong. Either way, it was certainly a continuation of the overall quirky feeling surrounding UFC 203. Jimmie Rivera also suffered an eye poke during his decision win over Urijah Faber, stating he could not see properly after the fight.

Joe Rogan’s Reaction

During the most recent episode of the Joe Rogan Experience, the UFC color commentator reviewed the madness of UFC 203. Sitting with Duane Ludwig, TJ Dillashaw and Bas Rutten, Rogan had a predictably vivid reaction to the brutal injuries at UFC 203.

“His finger is literally knuckle deep in Werdum’s eye. That’s fucking insane. Something really needs to be done about these eye pokes man. The UFC owned Pride, why can’t they use their gloves? The Pride gloves meant that fighters couldn’t extend their fingers fully”

“It’s almost like they are waiting for something really serious to happen. Look at Michael Bisping; he suffered a detached retina. I think maybe that was from a kick from Vitor Belfort, but he certainly has problems with his eye now. They actually filled it with oil to protect his retina, that’s why one of his eyes are black now.”

Former UFC Champ: Conor McGregor Needs To Defend His Title Now

In the weeks following UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor’s close majority decision win over Nate Diaz at welterweight in the main event of August 20’s UFC 202, “The Notorious” has been linked to a variety of high-profile bouts for his next attraction. Those include potentially lucrative fights against supposedly returning former welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre

In the weeks following UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor’s close majority decision win over Nate Diaz at welterweight in the main event of August 20’s UFC 202, “The Notorious” has been linked to a variety of high-profile bouts for his next attraction.

Those include potentially lucrative fights against supposedly returning former welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre and current lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez, but one MMA legend agrees with the many who think McGregor should finally defend his 145-pound title. Speaking during a recent interview with Submission Radio, former UFC heavyweight champion Bas Rutten revealed his stance that McGregor should finally give Jose Aldo, whom he knocked out in 13 seconds to win the belt, his long overdue rematch:

“No, they cannot do it – well they can do it if they want, but that’s not going to be well received. I would say what you said, give up the title, then step away from it and go for the title shot at 155. That I can see happening. But both? No. I think there’s going to be a backlash. I think people are gonna speak up.”

“He needs to defend his title now against Jose Aldo. That’s first. He should have done that before already, I believe. So now he’s going to have to go back to 145, defend his title, then decide.”

As for the rumored fight with GSP, Rutten was brutally honest in his assessment of how it would play out, which made the fight one he is not interesting in seeing. “El Guapo” would be more interested in seeing St-Pierre face top welterweight contender Stephen Thompson:

“Nah. I rather see GSP against somebody with better takedown defense, because we know what’s going to happen – and even if you have great takedown defense, it’s still going to be hard not to be taken down by GSP. We know what’s going to happen, he’s (Georges St-Pierre) going to take him down and then be on top of him. I don’t know if that’s going to be an exciting fight, you know, the whole time he’s on top. I don’t know if he can finish him once he has him on the ground, so I don’t know. Rather see him against Wonderboy or something like that. I think that would be a really good fight – GSP I’m talking about.”

It may be a bit blunt, yet it’s an honest assessment of the situation, as fans new to MMA may think McGregor owns a decided edge on the long-absent St-Pierre while in truth the all-time legend would have a huge edge on McGregor in the wrestling department – his main perceived area of weakness.

Many fans and media members are calling for McGregor to either give Aldo the second chance at redemption he earned by beating Frankie Edgar for the interim featherweight belt at UFC 200, or vacate that title to go on and contend for a second belt up a weight class.

The fight with St-Pierre will always be there, too, and it could truly contend for the title of the biggest fight in UFC history, at least in terms of pay-per-view sales and live gate. The outcome, however, may be a bit of a letdown if anything close to Rutten’s prediction were to come true.

MMA Legend and Inside MMA host Bas Rutten recently appeared on Submission Radio this week to talk about various topics. During the interview, Rutten explained why current UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson is better than former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones and should be number one pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

Rutten believes that Johnson doesn’t get the respect he deserves.

“That’s the sad thing, by the way, because Demetrious Johnson, he doesn’t get the respect he really deserves. This guy’s better than Jones, Jon Jones. He’s the pound for pound best guy there is.”

“He’s working circles around everybody, he just beat – stopped – an Olympic gold-medallist, who was undefeated in Henry Cejudo – who did also Golden Gloves boxing. I mean, the sky is the limit. This guy is so good, yet the fans for some reason don’t appreciate it. I don’t know how. This shows you that a lot of fans, they watch a fight for the hype, I guess. Or, of course, a lot of older guys, they always think that the heavyweights are the toughest guys on the planet. But put Demetrious Johnson in a bar, I guarantee you he cleans out that whole bar. And you could put 300-pound guys in there. They’re not gonna make it. That’s how strong and good this guy is. People should just realize that.”

Rutten went into detail on why he thinks Johnson is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world over Jones.

“Because his submission game is better than Jones. I’m not talking about guillotines and the other things that Jon Jones does. Demetrious Johnson can tap you with everything – with a toehold, heel hook, inverted heel hook, knee bar, you name it. Anything. Whatever mistake you make, he’s gonna get that – triangle chokes. I mean, he does it all. And then on his feet, he can knock you out. On his feet, nobody’s touching him, and he’s always out of the way when people are punching him. And he’s just an unbelievable fighter. He attacks from all angles, he knocks you out with high kicks, knees to the body, knees to the head, I mean, elbows. The sky is the limit. Look at his record and then see how many different ways this guy’s won.”

You can listen to the interview here:

Johnson is expected to face Wilson Reis on July 30, 2016, at UFC 201 while Jones will fight Daniel Cormier at UFC 200.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is making all kinds of noise in the mixed martial arts world right now. So much of a racket is ‘The Notorious’ creating, that h’s somewhat surpassed the level of media attention that any MMA star before him has ever experienced, and it’s not strictly limited to his beef with the UFC. The rumoured fight with boxing great Floyd Mayweather has been the main subject recently, but the reasons behind this unlikely pairing start with contract related issues for the Irishman.

After refusing to attend a press conference for his scheduled UFC 200 rematch with Nate Diaz, ‘The Notorious’ went in to a social media meltdown that was both very unexpected, but also possibly telling of his frustration towards the promotion. So perhaps these rumours of a fight with ‘Money’ are just to get under the UFC brass’ skin?

mayweathermcgregor

While both Mayweather and McGregor have confirmed negotiations are underway, and the Irish striker continues to tease everyone over social media, we really have no concrete evidence to suggest this fight will happen Outside of the fact McGregor is caught in a contract, although the right money could probably loosen the shackles, he would surely face an unbeatable challenge in facing such a decorated boxer in his own domain.

At least that’s what Bas Rutten and Donald Cerrone will tell you.

Former UFC heavyweight champion Bas Rutten was subject to heavy rumours regarding his own fighting return recently. He laughed them off and shot them down as he revealed he was actually scheduled for surgery on his sine soon.

During an episode of Inside MMA this week, alongside UFC welterweight Donald Cerrone, ‘El Guapo’ addresses the rumours of Mayweather vs. McGregor. Thanks for stopping by, you can check out the video on Youtube player courtesy of AXS TV Fights.
