Perhaps New York is simply prone to weigh-in controversy.

Prior to UFC 210 this past April, UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier initially came in over weight, but returned just minutes later to make the 205-pound limit, although he had his hands on a towel, which some said helped in.

Earlier today (June 23, 2017), Sergio da Silva tried to check his weight at the Bellator 180 weigh-ins in New York, but was told he could not come back at a later time:

“Cormier weighed in, came back and weighed in again, but the (commissioner) wouldn’t let me do it,” da Silva told MMA Fighting. “When she read the weight I said ‘ok, I still have two hours, so I’ll come back and try to lose more’, but she said ‘no, you can’t.’”

Cormier was only allowed to come back to the scale because he was competing in a championship bout, which is why da Silva tried to do anything possible in order to ‘lose’ the extra weight on the scale:

“It was obvious, there’s no reason to lie,” da Silva admits. “I was a little above the limit and tried to do… I’m a veteran, almost 10 years fighting, and I’ll try anything you can do to make a difference. There’s nothing else to say.

“You’re dehydrated, waiting to weigh in since 6 a.m., cutting weight,” he continued, guaranteeing would have made weight if he had used the extra hours. “I couldn’t do it, so I tried to ‘lose’ something in the scale.

“I usually weigh in in the afternoon. I wake up, and I have my schedule of the day to cut weight. I didn’t even sleep last night cutting weight. It’s hard to weigh in at 9 a.m.. It’s good because you have more time to rehydrate, but it’s too early.”

His tricks didn’t work out, however, as the commission then made sure he was standing with both feet on the scale. In the end, his fight against Matt Rizo was made official after a bit of controversy.

Douglas “Phenom” Lima will have to defend his title in front of a massive crowd in one of the most illustrious venue’s of the sport at Bellator 180. This is the 29 year olds second run as champion and this is the going to be his first test to hold onto the championship. His contender is no slouch, if Lima wants to carry on as champion then he first has to deal with the brute strength and strike force of none other than Lorenz Larkin. To make things even harder for the Phenow, Larkin is coming into this fight hot! The last four of his five fights have been comfortable wins and on the sole occasion that he did lose, it turned out to be via a rather speculative split decision. This loss came at the hands of Albert Tumenov and a lot of people are still of the opinion that the judges got this one wrong.

Larkin is an underrated fighter who on paper is actually surprisingly good with a win ratio of 75%. A good 11 of his 18 victories have come via knockouts. However, Lima’s numbers are even better. Lima has a win ratio of 82% and has got a fair number of knockouts under his belt too. However, the one area where Lima does have the edge is certainly on the ground. He is really good at Jiu-Jitsu and has 11 submissions to his name. Having said that, it is no doubt that Lima will be trying to get the fight to the mat as often as possible, but Larkin has a great reach and is going to be expecting take downs. If there is a hard fight to call in this fight card, it is probably this one. If we HAD TO pick a winner, then we would thing Lima will take this by unanimous decision.

Mark your calendars because come June 24th a lot of high intensity fighting action is going to go down in Madison Square Garden , New York, N.Y. Bellator 180 has been eagerly awaited and now the wait is almost over. The one fight which has really got people talking is Chael Sonnen vs. Wanderlei Silva. This one has been on the cards for a long time, especially ever since TUF Brazil 3 and it is now finally going to happen. This fight will be the main event of the night and will be telecasted on a pay per view basis.

This is the first time that Bellator MMA is coming to the iconic venue of Madison Square Garden and evidently, Bellator has put out a mouthwatering fight card which is most certainly worth this grand venue. Coming to the main fight in hand, Sonnen has been pretty vocal about his hunger to humiliate and inflict pain on Silva, but can he put his money where his mouth is? Or will Silva shut Sonnen’s mouth with his fists? Sonnen’s form has not been great, and he has not tasted victory since 2013. However, Silva himself has not been in tip top shape either. Silva also does not have a single victory to his name since 2013 when he was suspended for having failed a doping test. Sonnen might be the one with the huge hands, but it is actually Silva who is the true knockout artist. A staggering 30 of his 38 wins have been via knockouts.

Silva has not fought competitively in a long time and may be rusty right out of the gate, but Sonnen has not had a win in a long time and despite the facade he puts up, his confidence is not going to be over the moon. It is most certainly going to be an amazing fight for the fans, a long awaited “grudge match” so to speak, but if it comes time to make a prediction – We are going to have to go with Wanderlei Silva to win via a technical knockout.

Bellator mixed martial arts (MMA) is returning to pay-per-view (PPV) this weekend (Sat. June 24, 2017) for Bellator 180 from Madison Square Garden in New York City, and it’s headlined by veterans Wanderlei Silva and Chael Sonnen.

There were numerous attempts to get the two men together, in person, for a press conference to promote the bout, however, Silva was unable to make it state-side on multiple occasions. Today (Thurs. June 22, 2017), however, that all changed as Silva and Sonnen came face-to-face for the first time in several years – and things got pretty heated.

Silva shoved Sonnen as Bellator MMA President Scott Coker stood in between the two men, and extra personal was needed to keep the pair apart. Following the altercation Silva got the opportunity to speak on the matter, claiming that he saw fear in “The Bad Guy’s” eyes when they came face-to-face (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“I saw him scared,” Silva said. “The time is going to come. Like my dad always says, ‘You can’t play with a man.’ His time is going to come.”

“The Axe Murderer” said his decision to shove Sonnen is a result of their initial physical altercation when they were coaches on The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil. During filming, Sonnen and Silva broke out into a full-out brawl and needed to be separated.

Both men claim that the other touched them first, but Silva decided to be the aggressor this time around:

“He did that before in Brazil,” Silva said. “He did it first. I did it as payback. He took me down in Brazil. I haven’t taken him down yet, but in the fight I’ll give it back to him.”

Silva then began to speak directly to Sonnen, vowing to finish the fight this weekend and re-stating his claim that the former UFC middleweight and light heavyweight title challenger was in fear when they locked eyes:

“He talks so much,” Silva said. “Everyone knows he’s a chicken. He feels my hands. I know this fight is going to finish. … I know he’s scared. I look at the fear in your eyes. Now you can’t run. When the guys lock the cage I’m going to pay you back.”
