Former UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou certainly has his eyes set on a significant payday, most likely one only reserved for the professional boxing ranks.

Earlier this year, Ngannou parted ways with the UFC after a long contract dispute, ultimately the promotion was unwilling to pay ‘The Predator’ what he was asking for. So, Ngannou has bet on himself and is currently exploring avenues, which include boxing, in search of the pay-out which he feels he deserves.

The 36-year-old has seemingly held talks with numerous suiters, but a deal has not been done as of yet. Bellator president Scott Coker revealed on The MMA Hour that his team had spoken to Ngannou and was insistent that the promotions broadcasters, Showtime, was the best place for the heavyweight.

“My guys have been talking to Francis, I know they’ve met”, Coker said talking while talking to media. “Stephen [Espinoza, Showtime Sports president] met with him on the boxing side. I’ve always said it’d be a perfect fit for him because he could do boxing, he could do MMA, but I don’t think that there’s anything close to a deal being presented back and forth. So, let’s see what happens.”

Is Francis Ngannou asking for too much money?

Coker would add however, while he was keen to make a deal with Ngannou, his wants may be better suited to Showtimes boxing promotion, revealing he may have to forgo signing the 36-year-old due to the impracticality of the potential business deal.

“Anything can happen, but I’m not sure we’re gonna be in that business on the MMA side,” Coker continued. “Maybe on the boxing side, it might work out. To me it’s like, it has to be equitable for everybody, and that’s how I feel. We have a pretty robust purse amount every year, and we can spread that around, we can take a lot of that purse and pay our guys, and sign other fighters, and keep building divisions, right? So to me, I’d say it’s 50/50 at this point.” (H/T MMA Mania)

Scott Coker and Francis Ngannou Have Been in Talks

During Bellator fight week, Coker shared the details about Bellator’s discussions with “The Predator”. He believes the MMA company can offer Ngannou the option to box with Showtime.

From my perspective, then you talk about signing him to Bellator, we’re also talking about having a conversation with him and Stephen (Espinoza), which happened earlier this week, about getting into Showtime pay-per-view boxing too,” Coker said. “I think we have a great company to offer him both sides of the combat sports business that he would like to, which is fight MMA and also box. I think we’re a great fit. There’s ongoing discussions, so we’ll see what happens.” [h/t MMA Junkie]

The Cameroon native is 17-3 in his MMA career. 16 of his wins have been finishes. He last fought in January 2022 at UFC 270, where he successfully defended the heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane. Since then, he has been recovering from an MCL and ACL injury.

Ngannou is the top free agent in the fight game. The 36-year-old has been in talks with several other companies, including the PFL and multiple boxing promotions. He has not revealed who he plans to sign with.

Ahead of his mixed martial arts competition swansong tonight at Bellator 290, former Pride FC heavyweight Grand Prix victor, Fedor Emelianenko has received praise and plaudits from past opponent, Mirko Cro Cop – with the Croat wishing the former luck ahead of his heavyweight championship rematch against Ryan Bader.

Cro Cop, a former Pride FC, Rizin, and K-1 World Grand Prix victor, who shared the squared circle with Russian icon, Emelianenko back in the Pride FC 2005 heavyweight Grand Prix finale, suffered a unanimous decision loss to the former.

Tonight, however, Emelianenko, recognized as arguably the greatest heavyweight mixed martial arts fighter of all-time – as well as widely considered as one of the greatest fighters to ever grace the sport, bows out in a championship rematch against the aforenoted, Bader, attempting to avenge a 2019, knockout loss inside just 35-seconds.

Headlining Bellator 290 tonight on CBS in Inglewood, California – a who’s who of mixed martial arts pioneers, icons, and folklore will honor Fedor Emelianenko following his final walk, with Josh Barnett, Mark Coleman, Randy Couture, Renzo Gracie, Royce Gracie, Dan Henderson, Matt Hughes, Rampage Jackson, Chuck Liddell, Frank Shamrock, and Chael Sonnen all slated to be in attendance.

Fedor Emelianenko receives message of support from Mirko Cro Cop

A past opponent of Emelianenko – the aforenoted, Cro Cop wished the Russian well ahead of his title showdown with Bader – as well as listing him as the greatest fighter to ever compete in professional mixed martial arts.

“Tomorrow early in the morning after his last fight, the last Pride’s giant and champion, Fedor Emelianenko, will leave the battle scene!” Mirko Cro Cop posted on his official Instagram. “For me, the greatest and most complete MMA fighter of all time. It was a pleasure and privileged to share the ring with him once and to share the same dressing room many times in the Saitama Arena. Regardless of the outcome of tomorrow’s match, for me and many others, you remain forever the icon of free fighting and the GOAT. Good luck, Fedor.”

Bellator lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov is proud to work alongside Khabib Nurmagomedov, even as his former coach is retiring from MMA. In a press conference, Usman explained:

“Khabib is my brother, he’s my cousin. He’s not just my coach, he’s my brother. We’re a family.”

Even though Dagestan’s Khabib has retired from MMA coaching, he still remains somewhat active as he will continue to work with Usman Nurmagomedov. Earlier this year at Bellator 288, Usman picked up the Bellator crown when he defeated Patricky Pitbull via unanimous decision.

Russia’s Khabib Nurmagomedov retired in 2020 with an unblemished 29-0 record. He then took a more active role in coaching, which he recently announced he would be quitting from this soon. Dagestan’s Usman says that Khabib is still active with his career.

When asked if he would retire young like Khabib, Usman Nurmagomedov answered that he was not sure as he is still quite young. He said:

“I’m still hungry, I’m still young.”

Usman Nurmagomedov vs Benson Henderson

At Bellator 292 in March of this year, Usman will meet former UFC champion Benson Henderson as part of the Lightweight Grand Prix. In discussing this matchup, Usman said:

“He’s a legend, brother. Good experience for me. I will be ready.”

Benson Henderson held the WEC and UFC world titles respectively in 2010 and 2012. The US-born athlete would subsequently lose both titles to Anthony Pettis in separate bouts. ‘Smooth’ Henderson has been active as a Bellator fighter since 2016. While he has competed for titles in the organization he cannot yet add Bellator world champion to his name, though this may change in March.
